I could never understand when Ashley was homeless and Laurel wanting money from him how she could be driving round in a brand new car (though I did notice last night that the registration of her car was quite an old car).

They live in a village with a huge manor house round the corner and houses in the village worth over 200k (although admittedly Declan owns most of them...)they're bound to have a bob or two!

I presume Cain's insurance company paid out, judging by that nice new BMW he was driving tonight.

Must be how they can afford all that wine too. I always thought people in Yorkshire drank beer. Maybe Emmerdale is in a neighbouring "Moon Bubble" to Albert Square. Sort of like the Truman Show but with far flakier relationships and bed hopping.

Maybe there is a secret underground tunnel linking the Emmerdale village and EastEnders to each other!

I've noticed that really poor places can have some very nice cars parked in them. Best not to ask too many questions

All i know is if there is a character that has money and they drive a bomb, chances are it will crash sooner or later.

Emmerdale has been the recipient of what appears to be "product placement" cars for ages - cast members change vehicles at an improbable frequency.

I picked up on the absurdity of Laurel's car over a year ago.

They're probably all ahem 'nearly new' via Cain, and so a lot cheaper than in the showroom six months ago

The Sharma's own a business, so does Declan and Megan had the TT when she came( I expect she has some money as well).

A BMW is not a posh car anyway and anyone can have a nice car if they are prepared to pay for it. Has no one heard of HP or loans most of these people work so can afford to make the monthly repayments.

To be fair most the posh cars in Emmerdale are owned by the rich/posh residents.

Anyone who's at Home farm always has a posh car.
The Sharma's have posh cars.
The vets business car is a new one I think.
The Kings always had posh cars.
Diane's always had a newish car.
Cain has only recently had a new car.

I don't think it's that strange really.

Agreed, the amount of people I know who are skint but can still afford really nice cars - they must know good secondhand dealers and be up to their ears in repayments!

As for Declan, Megan and the Sharmas - if they were six months behind on the mortgage they'd still have a posh car, it's all about the image.

The vets are on extremely good salaries, they can afford decent new cars.

There's nothing fancy about Diane or Ruby's cars from what I remember, and Dan drives that pile of old junk!

I don't think there's anything weird about Cain having a BMW. You can get BMWs second hand relatively cheap and he's in the second hand/stolen car trade, so he'll get them even cheaper.

I agree I don't see anyone in the village with a fancy, expensive car that isn't rich.

As you said Dan's car is old, Ruby's was old. Debbie drives an old car. The cars at Butlers aren't new. Andy's jeep was always an older car. Diane's was new but not a fancy, highly expensive one.

It's only the Macey's, Home Farm estate, the Sharma's and Cain that have fancy cars IIRC.

I spotted that as well during the Ashley/Laurel split. She was complaining about being almost penniless and not being able to pay the rent yet she had this nearly new Focus outside. Bear in mind that she now has another motor (bought for her by Marlon if I recall) because the red Focus is the one stolen by the car jacker.

.
Hetty is not a pile of junk she is a classic VW camper and actually costs a fair bit even second hand. The cheapest I have seen has been £10,000 but some go for £25,000 plus, they are quite rare and collectable. I would have screwed if I was Dan and found Kerry had defaced it like she did.

that's true - it's probably the most expensive car in the village No way Dan could afford £25000 so that probably is the only 'unbelievable' car - everyone else would be able to get theirs secondhand and/or hp/rental!! Dan must know some really dodgy dealers. Either that or he bought it twenty years ago.

Well, if that is so, that Sweet Factory must pay fantastic wages!

They are always in the pub or cafe (don't think any of them actually cook a meal (apart from Marlon!)

I believe that Dan has had Hetty for quite some time.
She would be worth a bob or two, but I wouldn't have thought she would be worth £25,000 in her present state.
Watch Wheeler Dealers on one of the Sky Channels and you will get an idea about how much Hetty would be worth in her present state.

I always laugh when people say this on these forums. Poor communities are full of pubs, bookies, take aways, bingo halls, cafes and hairdressers. These are the kinds of treats that keep people going when they're otherwise skint, and even if they're poor people do still get credit. It's not like they're going to five star restaurants regularly, or buying expensive clothes. People who work in town centres often eat at their local cafes as a treat or to take a proper break from their workplace.

We don't often see the characters having a meal in the pub or cafe - it's usually a drink and at most a cake or sandwich, and they're all working people. Yes, they would take lunch some days and buy it others, in reality, but that would mean that we wouldn't see them interacting with other characters. We can surely assume that they cook a meal when they go home?

The car that she had car-jacked was an 11 plate Ford Focus. A few days later moneybags Marlon bought her a 06 plate Astra.
I can see why she didn't want it.

Now she seems to have a Zafira or something similar.

Marlon seems to have a brand new Astra.

In theory it's only the older generation and the likes of Vik and Declan that could afford to run such new vehicles.

Marlon's got money. He got some kind of compensation after the King's river house explosion, which I think allowed him to buy his house outright. He's got no mortgage to pay which is a huge saving, no travelling expenses for work and he might well have had money left over from the compensation.

My partner has a 10 reg Astra which he bought in 2011. We are hardly loaded but a good quality second hand car is more reliable and cheaper in the long run than an old rust bucket that will need mending when the exhaust falls off. Nearly new second hand cars can be bought for as little as £100 a month over 4 years. Even on factory wages they could afford that.

They live in the countryside. The bus service won't be all that good - probably a few buses a day, around about school times, - they need cars. You can get good second hand cars from dealers on repayment schemes, rental cars, or if you really want to a new car on repayment.

Or they could go to Cain and get a knock-off car, cash in hand at a fairly low price. Then there's car auctions, police auctions, ebay, people selling good cars privately and wanting a quick sale.

Just because it's a decent, fairly new car, doesn't mean that they've bought it straight from the original dealership, or that they've paid outright for it.
