S4C brings Welsh TV to YouTube, BBC iPlayer, YouView and TV Catch-up

By Alex Lane on Tuesday, 6th August 2013

S4C is planning a raid from the borders of Wales to the Marches of the Internet, with on demand catch-up via the web, a YouView app and channels on BBC iPlayer and YouTube.

The Welsh-language TV channel will expand beyond its own online on-demand service Clic, moving onto TV Catch-up and YouTube this year, then YouView and iPlayer in 2014.

The goal is to have all of S4C’s programmes and a live streaming channel on the iPlayer by the end of 2014.

Just how many people watch programmes in welsh, is there any truth in this story?

http://www.grumpyoldsod.com/sgorio.asp

"There was a mild flutter of interest recently in reports that a Welsh language TV show has been left red-faced after viewing figures showed that not a single person tuned in to watch it. Sgorio, a late night soccer show on Channel S4C, attracted an audience of zero people when it aired at 11:30pm on December 14. The episode of Sgorio covered highlights of the week for the German, Italian and Spanish football leagues, something of apparently little appeal to Welsh audiences".

I can just remember programmes in welsh on BBC1 when it was broadcast on channel 2 from Holme Moss. This has been discussed elsewhere on here and I understand the reasons for that but it must have been for the benefit of a tiny audience.

Hopefully some of the sports they show will be on BBC iPlayer, and hopefully in English audio option. I used to watch BBC Two Wales rugby when it was on (in Welsh though), and an extra option of S4C rugby would be nice.

Any way, it is funded by the Licence Fee so should be available to all, even if no-one chooses to watch - just like BBC Alba.
