Brookside - the consensual incest storyline was way ahead of its time
Even today, the soaps we have left wouldn't dare attempt something so subversive and if they did, the parties involved would be storming around in hysteria half the time (unlike Nat & Georgia SImpson who kept it all under cover
).If you found the whole thing psychologically disturbing, it did its job ![]() http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X17QnmpC4S0 |

I didn't find it disturbing, I just didn't enjoy watching it.
It was brave of Brookside to attempt a controversial storyline like this, but they were doing it for the wrong reasons: they wanted a storyline that would shock, and create an even bigger stir that the infamous body-under-the-patio storyline. If this had been something that had evolved naturally, involving two established characters, it might have worked better. Soaps (even Brookside) have attempted incest storylines post this one, but ones that have involved characters who are unaware that they are related. EastEnders touched on this with Dennis and Sharon, who - although technically half-brother and sister - weren't actually blood relations. |

The soaps tend to stay away from these kind of storylines but in a way they should not because it does reflect reality...

I was young at the time so only remember bits of it. Where they full brother and sister or half brother and sister? And how did they begin their relationship? Also what happened when everyone found out?

IIRC, they were full brother and sister. I'm not sure how it started. Brookside was in it's rapid tailspin at that time, and the incest was just another attempt at SHOCK! to try and get viewers.
Still, Helen Grace was lovely. |

Oh I didn't know they were full brother and sister. I'd like to see this storyline, it seems so weird.

So is Cain and Charity. But I don't think cousins count, as it's legal.

Best thing from the storyline was the fantastic Simpsons family therapy episode we got once the truth was revealed, the acting and writing was excellent and really showed a family that had just fallen apart. Ollie especially was just brilliant when he went on a massive rant about people watching them through the glass mirrors and threw a chair through the window at the end., Ollie Simpson as a whole was a fab character and had a great dry sense of humour.

Whoever said the incest story didn't work is talking absolute nonsense - it was just too ahead of its time.
There was a very funny scene was when Nat and Georgia were making love in the Costswolds cottage and Max Farnham walked in on them and said 'Oh.. sorry!!' and then did a double take outside the door. Nat had a wife to be named Jules and pretended he was gay to cover up the incest and get Jules to leave him. When his parents tell the Farnhams about their son coming out, Max's reaction is comedy gold: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M5VasCdf3A4 Here's the therapy session the Simpson family had after the incest was revealed - it's actually very funny! The mother Bel has speculated that the father may have sexually abused his children to make them like this and he throws a fit! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SAXYYW0HNdQ The actor John Sandford who played Nat is now a writer for Corrie and Emmerdale - he writes under the name John Kerr. |

Phil Redmond or Mal Young, can't remember which, did say soon afterwards that the big problem with the [lot was that they leapt into it too quickly. They should have had the Simpsons in for a good year before they introduced Georgia and the Incest aspect so that the viewers cared more about it - as it was it did seem as if the family was only introduced to run that sensational storyline. |

I agree it was ahead of its time and I for one really, don't know if enjoyed is the right word, but found it interesting. I didn't know that about the Nat - interesting. I had wondered what became of him because all the other actors in the family are still knocking around - indeed I say Georgia and Belle in the same Poirot quite recently. |

Ollie Simpsons reaction to getting a STD from wife Bel who had slept with Mike Dixon was excellent...writing down all his sexual partners on a small note pad and then handing Bel a A4 size of paper telling her to go the same and asking if she would be needing another sheet

I loved that Counselling scene. Ollie's absolute disgust that Belle should think of such a thing but actually it is quite logical - her assuming that something must have happened to either Nat and Georgia for them to start thinking sexually and that they were just copying what Daddy had done to them with each other. It was very brave of them not to go down that route as the explanation.

I know why people could get them mixed up - they have a similar speaking voice. Helen Grace is a stunningly beautiful woman.

Ollie remained in the show with the youngest son for quite a while, after his snooty wife left. |

Helen Grace went into the BBC John Sullivan 'Roger, Roger' fairly quickly and then yes, turned up in 'Bad Girls'. She still does a fair amount of episodic tv like Marple, Poirot and most recently was Maddie's mother in Hollyoaks. I always commented that given Maddie's obvious emotional and mental issues, it would be appropriate for her to be the produce of incest!
Ollie's new wife was the woman that is now in the Nationwide adverts and his step daughter was Lisa Faulkner in her first major role. |
