I think the regeneration limit will be dealt with in the 50th, and the only way I see it been dealt for once and for all, is there going to bring galifrey back, and I think from here the doctor will be awarded a new regeneration cycle

Could it not be said that the time lords gave all other time lords extra regenerations during the time war as a tactic to ensure they won ? As hurts Dr then ended it and destroyed the time lords they were not there to reverse this so the Dr now has unlimited regenerations or at least 500 and something as said n the SJA .. Just a theory ...

They definitely could, but I just think as a dramatic device and for a big story it would be daft to give up the regen limit on a brief line. realistically if they were inclined they could fuel whole series with the doctor seeking a way round the limit (nit saying that would be a good idea, just an example) so to just say it was dealt with in the time war would be I feel a waste

Maybe because Paul McGann(53) is only 15 or so years older than he was when he first played the role, and the Moff wanted to show the 8th Doctor as a much older character hence John Hurt (73)

I don't get whilst people are even debating this. It's been confirmed that he's playing a doctor in between 8 and 9!

And where was it confirmed?

The Daily Telegraph quoted costume designer Howard Burden as saying...

"There was a gap between Paul McGann playing the Doctor and Christopher Eccleston, when we didn't see a regeneration, and John Hurt will fit into that gap,"
"He is a past Doctor, not a future Doctor."

...Which was also speculated widely on various forums before this apparent "confirmation" came about.

... and then everyone else quoted The DailyTelegraph.

As far as I l know there has been no official confirmation of this from DWHQ.

Yes but does that mean he is an older 8th Doctor or an unknown 9th Doctor, thus pushing 9, 10 & 11 all one number forward, making P.C's Doctor number 13 ?

Not a Doctor at all, so the numbers stay the same.

For want of a better phrase, JH could be the battle Doctor, a Doctor created because of all his experience battling enemies rather than simply observing, a Doctor who ultimately turned on the Time Lords in the end! 9 has been described as an incarnation born of battle, this could be from whom he was born from, why he had all the angst!

I simply hope that they explain this John Hurt Doctor to be non-Doctor (if you know what I mean!). Love John Hurt - excellent actor....but let's leave the others in place! We had enough trouble with that bloody Valeyard in '86!!

I reckon If you count John Hurt and the Metacrisis Doctor, 12 regenerations have already been used pre-Capaldi.
Besides which, he's supposed to be "dead" in the TARDIS at Trenzalore and Capaldi wasn't seen by Clara.

I think therefore that Capaldi may be a "rebirth" for the Doctor.

Maybe he can just give himself more regenerations because he's The Other :P

a far more succinct way of putting what I said earlier. I completely think this is how it will happen.
