The Moon Brothers - could have they have made better characters?

I know Tylers leaving wasn't exactly "explosive" but in a sense I thought it possibly the best i'd seem the character written and his acting had significantly improved.

For the first time in ages Tyler interacted with Michael which I really liked, you had scenes with Alfie. Why the heck didn't the writers build on these relationships before???? He might have been a far more interesting character if they had.

If the writing team hadn't been so poor at writing with Anthony and Tyler could they have been successful characters?

They were doomed from the start, they were shoved down our throats from being unknowns on day one of that god awful 'Summer of Moons', to being non-entities after. If they had made them a more cohesive family unit afterwards it might have worked, rather than have Tyler do nothing but work his way around Lauren Lucy and finally Whitney and do absolutely nothing else.

I think they could have done soooo much with the brothers;

One of them could have the drug/alcohol problem instead of Lauren (and Phil!)

One of them could have been accused of a random attack/hate crime etc and the community rallies round them

They could have become involved in a crime without realising it - accessory etc.

Instead, they sold crappy antiques.

The bottom line is that neither “actor” actually showed much acting capabilities, which meant giving them anything meaty to deal with fell flat. As a result one was axed and the other was relegated to a background character.

I agree that it was refreshing to see Tyler interact with Alfie and Michael in his final episode, which was a lost opportunity, and he might have worked better as a character if he shared more screen time with them, but nonetheless, it was the fact both characters were employed on looks as opposed to talent which was their downfall.

When characters are introduced with a big fanfare and promises of greatness, they usually fall flat. To be a character in a soap, or indeed any drama requires a modicum of acting ability. Which neither of these brothers possessed. If, however a character is introduced quietly, and builds up relationships and interacts with other characters over a period of time, then so does the audience, and we feel some empathy/loathing or at least a reaction.

To be honest EE always struggles to introduce 'young adult' male characters to the show, especially those with no history in EE (Remember Callum Monks anyone...even Deano Wicks?). I think the main problem was their age.

Too young to really interact with the 'big boys' like Phil, Jack, Ian & Max etc, The moon brothers were left tacked on as the older memebers of the 'teen gang' and reduced their storylines to being arm candy for the girls.

It would have been better to cast The Moon brothers a bit older... nearer the age of 30. they could have established more of a believable presence in EE and interacted with different characters. More importantly they could have had more action with their brother Michael.

I dont blame the actors, I think they did the best with what they were given, but really they should have been casted as older characters.

Really good point and something I agree with 100%.

I've noticed they're much better at creating teenage girls than they are boys and I think you've hit the nail on the head - they can't interact with the older cast on the same level.

Darren Miller and Martin Fowler are probably a good examples of breaking this trend as we saw them gradually mature on screen. Sadly neither characters are still on screen.

When Anthony s promo pic was released, they said he was baddest of the two,

Would have liked to see a new Jake and Danny where Tyler was the normal one and Ant was the deranged one!

Exactly. Darren Miller and Martin Fowler, and the likes of Jay Brown now started off as younger characters who matured on screen. While Callum, Deano, Anthony & Tyler were foisted upon us as young men.

And the problem is... What are most guys like at that age? Football, beer & F***ing. lol they tend to be Jack the lads, so its quite hard for the scriptwriters to get us to emotionally invest in these characters quickly when all theyre doing is screwing around... yet that is probably what they would be doing in real life!

With the likes of Sean, Dennis, even Ryan Malloy, they were slightly older, so they could interact with the 'grown up' characters in a better way, and ultimately they were better characters.

If one of them was gay they would have been popular no doubt

and Danny and Spencer. Why are they never mentioned? Spencer should at least be mentioned, also surely Alfie would want his brother at his wedding.

Same as the other Moon brothers. Once they were there, EE didn't know what to do with them. So one got the boot and then the other got the boot shortly after. Deja vu.

And they will never ever get mentioned again in a few months time, Its like they never exited, Alfie is so rude!

Or Maxwell?
Its really silly Alfie was considering Tyler as his best man over his own brother.

Alfie has a brother? I actually forgot!
New viewers would not know Spencer, Jake, Danny, Maxwell, Nana Moon because Alfie forgets them all!

Nana was referenced in December on the anniversary of her death.
Spencer didn't turn up to that either.

Their early storylines were focused around Michael and Eddie, and TBH, while I was never a fan of either of them (Anthony and Tyler) I thought they worked quite well when put together with their dad or brother. After Eddie left they became redundant. Anthony did bugger all apart from a brief fling with Amira and the whole Jodie/Poppy thing, and Tyler eventually came to be defined by his relationship with Whitney. Essentially, weak characters.

Yes, Jake and Danny were brilliant, IMO, the two forgotten Moon brothers (according to EE anyway) They had a dark and complex past, I can remember one of them telling Alfie about how their dad was abusive.

Danny was an interesting character - he obviously cared about his brother and Nana, but was quick to throw Spencer under the bus when he got into trouble and had no qualms about killing Phil and Grant and would've done had Jake not shot him. Jake was the older, level-headed one, who always tried to keep Danny in check (c.f. Anthony and Tyler when they first arrived, Anthony being the calm one and Tyler was the hot-headed boxer).

I was also a fan of the post-shooting Jake, and I actually enjoyed watching his struggle as he tried desperately to keep going. He had a fantastic exit, IMO - Joel Beckett's lines were brilliant, particularly his outburst at Ruby. The moment when Pat asked him if everything was alright and he paused, looked away and replied "yeah..everything's alright" was superbly followed up by his confrontation with the gangsters.

Spencer gets a mention every now and then, just like Nana. Jake and Danny never get mentioned at all, for some reason. Same with Maxwell, with whom Spencer was supposed to be staying.

Unfinished business right there?
Annoyed about how they left it,

Still think the door is very much left firmly open for Jake. It was never confirmed on screen what happened to him. He was definitely the strongest Moon by a country mile. While I think highly of Michael, I know he's not universally popular while Jake was very well liked by everyone if I remember rightly.

I'd probably list the Moon's in this order: Jake, Michael, Nana, Alfie, Danny, Maxwell, Eddie, Spencer, Anthony, Tyler.

My list is almost identical to that, except Danny has overtaken Alfie on mine (because I don't really like the returned Alfie)

I definitely agree. Michael is a very intriguing character, and out of all the present characters I'd rate him second only to Janine in terms of being my favourite, but Jake will always be my favourite Moon.

Nanna Moon was the only decent Moon

In terms of being a "nice" person, I agree. In terms of being an interesting character to watch, I strongly disagree, for the reasons I pointed out above. Not that I'm implying Nana wasn't interesting...

Isn't Alfie supposed to be nice?

I guess he is, but they seem to vilify him on occasion so he doesn't necessarily always come across as nice to me, for instance stringing Roxy along right now when he cleary doesn't love her.
