...getting bored now with this patronising of producers who try to tell us that you turn gay overnight? It has been done to
death in every soap. Yes I accept one might have hidden feelings but to keep showing characters go from hetrosexual to lesbian/gay all of a sudden is just more lazy writing.

Are you referring to a particular soap? I don't recall it happening in Corrie - quite the reverse.

Emmerdale - Rhona and the other vet - doesn't that become a thing/fling

I think that's a little different than the 'turning gay overnight' thing; I think that because Rhona knows Vanessa has feelings for her, as well as her being a drug addict getting drugs off Vanessa, Rhona will do whatever it takes to get drugs, even if it means embarking on a fling with Vanessa. It's not like Rhona has actually got romantic feelings for Vanessa - well, not that we know of, anyway.

right, thanks for clarifying that. If Rhona is prepared to have a fling with Vanessa though then it's bordering on the same thing. Haven't watch it for a while so please forgive my ignorant - has Rhona become a drug addict or is that Vanessa?

Rhona's become the drug addict. And I do kind of agree that it's bordering on turning gay overnight, but I think it's more to do with Rhona's desperation to get drugs than her actually having romantic feelings for Vanessa.

Agreed.

Besides, it's Hollyoaks which is renowned for characters being "hugged gay" (love that DS forum term!)

Thanks for explaining that - you're a star so we've got the turning to drugs overnight now

Well, even that's not true; Rhona fell and hurt her back at Vanessa's birthday party in March, was prescribed painkillers and has slowly become addicted to them since then.Yes, I'm kind of obsessed with the storyline.

But you are kind of right in the 'turning gay overnight' thing. I mean, take Sonia from Eastenders. Very happy with Martin one minute, and next minute had like a week-long lesbian relationship with Naomi or whatever she was called.

All seems a bit daft but soapland is. It shows how long it's been since I've sat down to a full episode. I stopped watching with the Cameron rubbish. It was good Christmas but you just know it's going to drag out till Christmas with some ridiculous stuff in between.

I agree on both points, actually. The only saving grace is that the drug storyline is being acted out by, in my opinion, two great actresses.

And as for Cameron... the 'Killer Cameron' thing instantly became a switch-off storyline for me because Cameron murdered my beloved Carl. And don't even start me on the Gennie/Nikhil romance cruelly ending. And I've actually come to loathe Debbie since she decided she was a queen who could get away with absolutely whatever she wanted because she could. Well, she's always been like that, but this year has been awful!!

God, I need to stop pretending Emmerdale is real.

:I certainly don't blame you in that case. It is a nice programme that's always 'there' it's just it's another one that's just busy these days that it's hard to keep up with. I do miss the Sugdens - the grown ups I mean My main gripe though is that Home Farm is just so wasted; I long for the days of the Tates - that's when it was really gripping stuff

Yeah - in a way, I think Emmerdale is the most 'realistic' out of all of the soaps. I don't know why; just do. And the Tates, after the Dingles, are Emmerdale's most iconic family, I think. Mainly down to the legendary Kim, who remains the best soap female villain ever.

agree with all of your post in fairness. I also one hundred per cent believe that Kim will never be beaten as a soap bitch. Some try to compare her with EE's Janine - not even close.

Now, this is very difficult for me as I completely and utterly adore Janine, and think that she's one of the best characters EE has ever had, but Kim was kind of solidified as number one soap bitch before Janine even became one, so Kim wins by default.

yes and I can't help but like Janine which makes me somewhat concerned for my state of mind. However, she is an interesting character. The Barry and cliff episode borders on the excitement of Kim coming back from the dead and checking that Frank was still breathing by using her compact! Classic viewing.

Under Newman LGBT characters were ignored in EE.

I am hoping that DTC being a gay man himself will rectify that.

Agreed about the Sonia and Naomi thing. I think they got spooked by the Todd Grimsure storyliine over on Corrie, so shoved those two together for no reason. It was pretty bad.

There's nothing wrong with your mind whatsoever for liking a character as legendary as Janine. The actress who plays is another one who's in what I call 'The Underrated Club', i.e. good for playing one particular side to a character, nasty in Janine's case but amazing at showing the character's other sides, i.e. emotion etc.

And good ol' Kim and her compact - I'd say that's one of Emmerdale's top 5 most iconic scenes, maybe even top 3.

I look at that story as a non-story. It didn't really have any particular build-up, and was just a mess from start to finish.

There was another female couple in Eastenders whose relationship I thought was unexplored or at least taken to a new level. It was the black and white girls and for the life of me, I can't remember their names. I do remember liking them though or at least thinking they were ok.

It would be refreshing if Sadie was gay but I don't think Newman would have had the bottle to do that...

Della (who was black) and Binnie (who was white).

They were packed off to Ibiza.
