an unawareness of acceptable language, when referring to fellow human beings, tends to betray some level of racism..... maybe not outright facist racism, but racism nonetheless....

Different people use different terminology. Surely behaviour and the way people treat each other is FAR more important than teminology (which does come and go with the years and generations can eaily get left behind without realising).

i really dont think the poster of this thread meant any harm by his question. its ridiculous to jump down his throat like this as i find it difficult to believe anyone would be offended by it. its not as if he even used an ugly word....just a dated one.

How many of you who have posted your disgust at the original thread are 'black', 'coloured' or shall we say 'people of colour?

I personally think it's not WHAT is said but HOW. Some poeple just have a way of being ofensive no matter what term they're using, and others get annoyed on your behalf - so, who's who on this thread?!

I dont think it's dated at all. We all know what he meant, I have no problem with it.

when an elderly white woman sees a ginger haired person coming towards them in the subway they are less likely to clutch their bag that extra bit tighter as they often do when seeing a black person.

such are the detailed public reactions that many black people have to put up with every day.

Rawham,

Calling me an insulting name as you have is really not a proper use of this forum in discussing a point of view. You need to restrain yourself, as I never insulted you.

Big Ron saw nothing wrong in referring to black/African people with an offensive word. He variously claimed ingnorance and that it was a proper word of the times as he grew up and not racist.

In a TV show, he was sent to the USA to learn a little bit about the origins of the word and to try to understand African American sensitivities regarding the offensive term.

You might have asked me for more information before feeling the need to brand me a bastard. My parents were married before I was born, for your information.

its only irrelevant to those in positions of power who are calling most of the shots... ie: white heterosexual males

Personally I do that if the orange people in the Kappa suits and Burberries come out of the tan studio. Some of them even feel compelled to take their tans to the street to protest against the poppy ones and support William the tanned . I see them walk every summer in their nice shiny dark orange brown uniforms. A reality that the popy ones have to face. Since I am a popy one I am not too pleased about them, especially if they disturb my Sunday morning nap, when they feel the urgent need to louden their "music", when they pass the popy church. I also see the tanned ones escorted by police.

Do you consider Big Ron to be racist?

a lot of mysogonistic men refer to women as "females"..... not an offensive word in itself, but theres something in the context, tone and use of the word that betrays a level of poisonous thinking.

similarly ignorance regarding acceptable language regarding race betrays the likelihood that the person using a dated term doesn't spend much time in the company of black people, nor thinking or empathising much about (human) race issues

where do you get this drivel??
how doesnt it imply that coloured skin is the foundation starting point and that white people are inferior as they dont have it.

Very few black people in Scotland, more a job issue than a colour issue I believe. We can go into the whole job and Scotland England issue if you like, but maybe better not. The thatchy one is away.

surely its best to have conversations with individual members of any particular minorities in your life and ask them what is offensive and what is acceptable.
