I had BT inifinity installed 2 weeks ago with the HH 4 (type A) and everything has worked - connection found, no problem.

This week, my ipod touch was unable to join the network but the iphone 5, another ipod and a tablet could connect without a problem. The ipod touch managed to connect to another WIFI used at the property and my work wifi without a problem.
I thought it maybe the ipod touch as it was quite old but that doesn't make sense since it connects fine to other networks. I restored network settings and other options suggested by Apple but to no avail.

I have turned my attention to the Hub. My laptop (older than the ipod touch) gets the connection no problem along with the other devices. I went into the hub management page but I am not smart enough to decifer the event log so would like some help so I can fix this because I thought BT infinity was the better more reliable option?

The ipod touch Wifi IP address is 00:25:00:b7:35:f6.
On the event log, it shows STA before the address - but it shows STA before all the device IP addresses. Should I change this to DHCPP ? or is this (Static ? alright)
The Lease on all the devices on the event log is set to 1440 min. (1 day) is that alright too, what does it mean ?
Do I have to keep renewing the lease ? How do I do that ? I read it can be set to 21 days ?

Going back to the IP address on the ipod it shows the Hostname as 00:25:00:B7:35:f6-2 this is different to the IP address with the -2. Could that be a cause of the unable to join network or is it because I attempted to recreate the network on the ipod so its the second version of that host name ?

Is there any setting I can change to fix this because I am concerned the same this will happen to the other devices and then the laptop....

What do I need to do to be able to get my ipod touch to connect to the BT network setting ?

I think its the hub 4A causing the 'block' on the ipod touch not the device and I think its maybe a matter of changing a setting - but then why was it all fine before when Infinity was first installed ?

Lastly my laptop (7 Years old) seems to be attached to the 5GHZ Wireless channel - is that alright - I didn't think it has the ability to connect to 5Ghz with Intel ? The other more recent devices are on the 2.4ghz channel (except the ipod touch which isn't on any !!)

Is it alright to turn the hub on / off ? -I am resisting that because I don't want to make the situation worse.

Sorry but what does client disassociated mean and all the BLOCKS - do they relate to firewall ?

Please can you review the event log and my questions ?

The 5ghz channel is also the same SSID as the 2.4GHZ channel - I think they need different SSID's ? Doesn't the Hub give it a different SSID ?

First thing I would do is delete the settings in the wifi on the iPod touch, allow it to find your hub again on its search and enter the wifi password to see if it then connects. As long as you don't have any MAC address restrictions or access control on the hub then it should.

If that fails then I'd restart the hub, I had to do that earlier in the week as it stopped allowing connections from 802.11b devices, all other devices connected fine.

Hope you get it sorted anyway.

Name the SSID on the 5GHz something else.

Dont think you have option of different ssid. Its just to recognise the router then negotiation begins on 2.4 or 5.

Have you renamed ssid to something weird that the ipod cant handle?

You can set the SSIDs for the 2.4 and 5 ghz independently in the advanced settings but I can't see the problem being related to that.

Did you try deleting the wifi settings on the iPod ie hitting "forget this network" and the allowing it to search and find again ?

I have two SSID's on my Home Hub 4 one for 2.4 and the other for 5 ghz. It seems to work a lot better that way.

What benefit have you seen having 2 ssids? I have hh4 myself so could set it up. Its only mine and wife's phone that can use 5 and anytime ive looked it has went to 5

on devices with 2 radios, you know which band your connected with. 5GHz range is really limited and you should't expect the signal to be very good through walls or outside. With that in mind you might want to use 2.4ghz. separate SSID's helps there as devices tend to want to connect to 5ghz even if the signal is crap and 2.4ghz would be better.

However if there are only doors and maybe 1 wall or a floor between you and the signal 5ghz may well be a heck of alot faster than 2.4ghz!

Hi ,Thanks for all the advice given. I renamed the 2.4ghz band because the laptop by the router accepts 5ghz - its an old laptop but the Intel processor can pick up 5ghz albeit the 802.11a and not 802.11n. The iphone 5 picks up the 5ghz band as well and that is noticeably faster. The old ipod seems to be find the 2.4ghz band width now. - Time will tell.

I think when the HH4 was set up it should have Yes ticked on the 5ghhz tab in the router page to sync with 2.4ghz channel so that there is no disruption when moving away from the 5 ghz band.

Just a quick follow up though, The speed on the old laptop with 5ghz band is 54 mbs but I think that is because its using an older processer - 'a' and not 'n' ?

It took about 9minutes to download a movie from itunes - not bad ??

The only other disadvantage is using itunes icloud. My other laptop (2.4ghz channel) can't retrieve from icloud because the data was downloaded using the 5ghz wifi band

Finally, will my service be affected if the wifi isn't used for 10 days - due to going on holiday ? Should I expect to see the same speed when I return or does it take time to build up the speed again ?

I would doubt you are getting 54Mb/s on the laptop over WiFi. That may be the 802.11a spec but real world speeds are often half that. Try running the speed test at speedtest.net and see what that says.

9mins to download a movie could be hyper fast or slower than a snail with arthritis. Without knowing the size of the file it is impossible to say

What WiFi band you use to upload/download to/from iTunes iCloud is completely and totally irrelevant. The WiFi goes as far as the Home Hub. Whichever band you use as soon as it hits the Home Hub it gets out to the interweb over the phone line. iCloud neither knows nor cares what happens to the data once it gets to the Home Hub. So not really likely that the failure to share data is because of what WiFi band the devices are using.

And even if you are sharing data between laptops it should not back a blind bit of difference what connection they make to the Home Hub. It is the job of the Home Hub to point data to and from devices regardless of where those devices are on the network. Provided everything is configured correctly of course.

And as the WiFi goes only as far as the hub whether you use it or not has no impact at all on your broadband connection. Similarly it will have no impact on WiFi speeds whether you use it or not.

Thanks for the update. It maybe because the movie is a rental rather than bought and Itunes has retrictions.

I do have another issue today, regarding the 5ghz on the HH4 and our laptop that sits right underneath it.
My BT HH4 has the 2.4ghz channel and 5 ghz channel under two different names because of the issues I had with my devices not being able to connect.

However today the laptop (sits right under the HH4) that can recieve 5ghz channel won't connect to it.
I was able to connect to the 2.4ghz channel and opened inssidier.
It shows the hub on the 5ghz channel but its a dotted line that is interrupted instead of the solid slightly shaking line that I'd expect to see.

The BT WIFI, the only other one onchannel 40, is doing the same thing. The signal comes back and is interrupted and returns. Hence my Laptop being unable to connect to find it ?

Is this because the 5ghz network is being 'worked on' or is there another issue ?
I don't think its my hub but has 5ghz channel has only me and the BT Wifi on it why would it not be more reliable ?
Also if I couldn't get the 2.4ghz channel and connect wirelessly, how am I able to view my hub manager page as I wouldn't be able to see the internet ?

Will this continuously be an issue I've had the HH4 and infinity for 3 weeks and its not as reliable as I would have expected. Its an aggravation that is not needed and this should all be explained when its set up.

Define "sits right underneath it" just exactly what do you mean by that? Do you mean the hub is on a shelf above the laptop or in a room above the one you use the laptop in? That could have a bearing on what sort of signal you receive. 5GHz won't go so far as 2.4GHz and won't travel through walls and floors as well.

There is also the possibility the 5GHz section of the laptop WiFi adapter is failing. inSSIDer relies on the laptop WiFi adapter to show the available networks in it's display. If the laptop isn't working 100% then you've no real idea if the problems inSSIDer is showing are due to the laptop or the networks it is receiving. You would need to run inSSIDer on another device and compare the results to work out where the problem is.

Not so sure what you mean by "Is this because the 5ghz network is being 'worked on' or is there another issue ? ". What 5GHz network? If you mean the WiFi signal you are seeing on your laptop that is being generated by your Home Hub. The only person that could be "working on it" is you.

Hub Manager is not dependent on the internet. You could disconnect the Home Hub from the modem, or the modem from the phone line or even rip out the BT line altogether and it would still work. All it needs is a connection between laptop and Home Hub. So if you can use Hub Manager normally that implies there is a connection between laptop and Home Hub but not necessarily that the Home Hub or the laptop are talking to the internet.

Reliability of 5GHz can be worse than 2.4GHz depending on the circumstances. 2.4GHz can travel further and can often penetrate walls and floors more easily then 5GHz. Just the nature of the beast. If you use either in the same room as the Home Hub then they ought to be pretty similar if the kit is working properly. Though things like other WiFi networks, video senders or whatever using the 2.4GHz band can degrade the performance which sometimes makes 5GHz a better option.

The HH4 is on the shelf above the laptop.
Re. The 5ghz network, I meant the signal (sorry its all pretty new to me) I didn't realise the HH is what generates the signal.

The 2.4ghz signal worked fine when that was connected to the Laptop, the 5ghz signal in InSSIder kept disappearing and reappearing and so I couldn't get a connection.

Thanks anyway - I don't think I can resolve it but its the reliability of it that upsets me and the lack of continuity.

As I posted you really need to run inSSIDer on two or more devices and compare results to guage where the problem lies.

You might even find that moving the laptop a few inches could make all the difference. Depending on the design of the aerials in the Home Hub there could actually be a null in the signal directly beneath it. ie where the signal is next to zero. Radio transmissions from a simple aerial resemble a ring doughnut with the aerial in the centre of the ring. And immediately above and below the aerial there is no "doughnut" so no signal. Move the laptop a little bit to the side and you hit "doughnut" and get signal.

Radio Frequencies do strange stuff like that and it is often surprising how little movement you need to go from 100% to 0% signal or vice versa. You might find that moving the laptop allows it to receive a solid signal on 5GHz.

Though to be honest as long as it connects on one band or the other it doesn't really matter. Unless the 2.4GHz band is swamped out with neighbouring networks causing shed loads of interference. Which is not likely to be a major problem so close to the Home Hub.

Mind you if the laptop never moves I would be tempted to forget about WiFi and plug the laptop into the hub via cable. Much less hassle and likely to be both faster and more reliable.
