I'm in that situation and at first I was a bit annoyed, but thinking about it, all they are doing is offering all customers that deal.

Why should they give some existing 1Meg customers 4Meg for the same price as others get 2Meg for? That would be unfair to those who missed the offer. If you want 4Meg then pay the old 2Meg price and if you want 2Meg pay the old 1Meg price etc.

Seems fair enough to me that I should be getting twice the deal everyone else is. None of us are any worse off than we were.

On that note, can anyone who's on 4Meg report back as to how they find it? Is it notieceably faster? I just do normal surfing and some downloading of music & video.

4 meg is noticably faster on downloading. Only when downloading from servers that can handle it though (unlike the nero servers at the moment.) If downloading from my university intranet i can get download speeds of 400-490kbs

I have justed checked my speed now, and I think that I might of got upgraded even though I signed up for the 1mb for 512kb offer. Can someone confirm that I have been upgraded.

Downstream 1430 Kbps (178.8 KB/sec) 1544 Kbps (inc. overheads)
Upstream 267 Kbps (33.4 KB/sec) 288 Kbps (inc. overheads)

looks like it u have mate. i wouldn't rush and tell them

I understand peoples point here. But i do think the people with the offer should get upgraded. Its only fair, as they signed up with an offer saying they would get "upgraded" to the next best thing...for 12months. So they should honour this for 12 months, then whack them down.

I am not convinced with you. People have got 1/2 price RENTAL (£13 /month) for the first 3 months.. we did not get that option. So we should be entitled to this option.

I tried it today.. and it seem that my account has not been upgraded yet... Will try again in couple of days..

I signed up for the 1/2 price rental for 3 months in late december and checked last night and I have been upgraded. (from 1MB to 2)

They must have just been testing the 4Mb a few days ago because I am back to the 2Mb speed. Waiting for Feb. 1st...

Downstream 1936 Kbps (242.0 KB/sec) 2090 Kbps (inc. overheads)
Upstream 267 Kbps (33.4 KB/sec) 288 Kbps (inc. overheads)

The way I read it is those who have the double speed offer will just stay on the upgraded speed, i.e. if you had the 2meg for the price of 1 meg you'll keep the 2 meg connection and not be upgraded to 4 meg.

to me it seems like homechoice have planned this really well. They offered us a free upgrade for 12 months, but its weird how the monetary incentive for us has dwindled into 4 months worth of upgrades (which if u got the 2 meg service is worth 60 pounds at most) which is pretty similar to the 3 months half price they were offering after october. If you ask me they knew they were gonna upgrade lines in february, otherwise they wouldn't have offered us such a too good to be truth offer.

My 2 pence worth. It doesn't look like us october people will get the upgrade. Someone on the support line told me we wouldn't. They stance is that they are just upgrading the rest of the customers to the same level.

just booted up my set top box and tried the internet i'm now getting 4081Kbps (including overheads) according to the adsl guide so looks like the speed increase has now gone live.

Woo hooo

1880kbps before overheads which doesn't surprise me because I'm on a long piece of string. It's about double what I used to get.

Interesting.

A download from a known fast UK server of a large file manages ~220kbytes/sec speed while the TV service is off or showing C1

Download a similar file from the same server while watching BBC 1 and I get ~110kbytes/sec

Change channels during the download from BBC 1 to C1 and then back again and you can see the speed increase then decrease!

Looks like homechoice have changed the monthly data capping as follows:

1Mb service 30GB per calendar month
2Mb service 45GB per calendar month
4Mb service 60GB per calendar month

The most noticable improvement is people on 1Mb now have 30GB over the calendar month instead of 1GB per day.

to tell me that I have been upgraded to 2Mb at no
extra charge.

The test I ran says i am running at 1805 kbps downstream

Upstream is 265 kbps.

I cannot say i am noticing any difference...but I am on a wireless network with husband's PC...I take it my speed would be therefore slower.

Can some kind person tell me if my speed is OK?

My 512 service has been upgraded to 1meg this morning. Tested it and got 1080 kbps.

Jongatera, are those new data caps official? Excellent news for former 512 users as we had a 5 gig cap before.

Anyone else seeing real world slowdowns when watching Broadcast TV?

Not sure that the ADSLguide.org.uk checker can be trusted to show these slow downs as it downloads so little data and can easily be catered for by the HC network to bypass the slow down.

Yes - I had a HC engineer round the other day because of intermittent picture breakup and he lowered the bit-rate on my connection. So, now the ADSLguide speed check is giving a slower speed when the HC STB is on (around 800kb compared to the normal 1Mb) compared to when it's off. Don't know if the channel it's on makes a difference. I haven't had a chance to check yet whether the net connection is any faster after the upgrade.

Unfortunately I wasn't in when the engineer came round, so didn't get a very good explanation of what he did. He left comments saying if there was still a problem that it would help to fit an NTE2000 socket (a faceplate filter) and cable direct to the STB - I have it hung off an extension at the moment. I might try upgrading the wiring myself then ask them to try the older bit-rate again to see if the break-up problem is still there.

Anyone know what sort of distance from the exchange would normally give good service? I guess there'll be several factors involved, but would be nice to know if my line is OK or a bit dodgy.
Nikhil

usually about 3.5km from the exchange you should still be able to get full speed mate.

It's weird - it does appear that upstream speed is much quicker than it used to be. Or maybe I'm imagining it...

That said I'm not on 15mb down and 1.5mb up at my office - so maybe that has something to do with it. Hee hee

checked my results just now and they are as follows ( on upgraded free 2 meg)

Direction
Actual Speed
True Speed (estimated)

Downstream 1931 Kbps (241.4 KB/sec) 2085 Kbps (inc. overheads)
Upstream 330 Kbps (41.3 KB/sec) 356 Kbps (inc. overheads)
