My wife and I are buying our Great grand son a Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 and I would like to know if there is a good free email security for it and a good O/S for it only because he says he is not keen on the one that comes with the tablet, he is a windows user.

Windows will not run on this tablet as it's an Android tablet.

Also, what do you mean in terms of 'Email Security'

I own a Note 10.1 and it's an excellent Android tablet. Not sure why you'd want to install Windows. You could always buy a Windows tablet but I certainly wouldn't choose one over an Android tablet

You could always download AVG from the Google Play store - I'm sure there are other free anti-virus suites available as well, but AVG is the one I use and I'm not had any problems either on my tablet or Smartphone.

I've always found Android tablets very easy to use and it's a refreshing change from Windows.

I think you'll find your grandson will love the sheer plethora of free apps available and this will more than compensate. Even the paid for ones are tons cheaper than their PC software equivalents.

AVG is crap. It's also pretty much pointless.

I use Avast for my Note 10.1 as AVG wouldn't install. It monitors everything you download and install and also has security features if the tablet gets stolen.

AFAIK there's no other OS to install, it comes with Android Jelly Bean which is great - I'm not sure what else you mean?

Android tablets come with Android installed (version 4.2.1 on the Note 10.1). You don't need to use antivirus on tablets as there is virtually no risk - despite what some scaremongering people will tell you. I've used Android products since they first came to the market and I've never used an antivirus product.

The Note 10.1 is a great product and I'm sure sure your grandchild will enjoy it.

My daughter has just bought the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 as she's starting uni soon and it is a fantastic tablet. She's on holiday with her boyfriend so I've had a good play on it. It wipes the floor with my iPad2. I took it into work and used it to take notes at a team meeting. The S pen is awesome!

There are plenty of reasons to use AV on a tablet.

One of them would be to act as a double warning for unsafe app permissions.

I would second no need for anti virus software on a tablet.

I really doubt anyone above the age of 55 even had one single computer at school.
This so called 'common sense' is only learnt via time, though even there, people seem to quite like risky activity.

I also like it to be in use so that a malware knowledge base is built up.

If I was you, I would establish if he'd actually use an Android tablet before you buy him one.

Might be better to establish if he would rather go down the Windows route first. And if he is insistent on Windows, then establish whether RT or Pro is more suitable. Although, chances are he'll say Pro and then things start to get expensive ....

Decided to get this. Reviews seem pretty positive. Was gonna get one of the cheaper ones but thought in the long run would be better paying that bit extra. Getting mine from currys for 299 after cashback. Prefer getting it from shop instead of online.

I would install an AV on any Android phone or tablet as my son has found out to his cost, because I went to use his phone and installed malwarebytes for android as a secondary backup. Found some suspicious file and a load of porn pictures that the malware was downloading to his phone. There was over 100 pictures and everytime I was trying to delete them, more were getting downloaded. Ended up formatting his memory card and with thee suspicious program gone and we did a full reinstall of his phone just to make sure. All is now well. The program he showed me that had the malware on it was from Google Play store and has been reported to Google as well.

There will always been a modicum of risk. Fact is, if your son goes on porn sites and downloads files, no AV software will help. I also think AV on android is pointless; stick to simple rules such as, 1) Install only from Playstore 2) Check to see if it comes from a reputable developer or it has good reviews.

When we bought our Galaxy we got Norton for tablets with it.

I got McAfee livesafe with mine. Really love this tablet btw.
