Is it me or is the lip sync out on that video? Only a fraction of a second but enough to notice
It looks out to me aswell, but it is also slightly out when I watch AJS via satillete TV

It doesn't have to cost the earth. It just depends on the logistics and what hardware you've got. I've just hooked up my laptop to the tv from the other side of the room with a 10 metre hdmi cable which only cost £10 from Amazon.

I think your method of HDMI cable will be the only way since AJS will not support AirPlay for this season (from what I understand)

It is a pity, as AirPlay is probably the best way to get content to our TVs, and the iPad, iPod Touch or iPhone's touch screen makes the perfect remote.

But there is a big catch to the HDMI cable route, and that is most wife's are not terribly happy to have cables dangling across the floor

In fact, I don't like cables either. I got my first wireless remote 30 years ago, and the last thing I want to do in 2013 is go back to cables from my sofa to the TV.

This does seem to be a downside to the AJS service. From what I understand, and it is not confirmed yet, AirPlay will be possible on the PremierLeaguePass iOS app.

What I've been doing is using Air Play Mirroring from my iMac to the Apple TV.

That works flawlessly, and there's no way Al Jazeera can switch that off as you are not using an app, only a standard web browser.

They won't be dangling anywhere! I've had plenty of practice at hiding away cables in various cunning ways around rooms . Have to watch out for the gripperrods though as they tend to bite!

PLP have confirmed that AirPlay is supported. I think they also said that the app would be out before the season starts so we won't hold our breath on that one.

I was going to be replacing an ancient laptop PC in one of the bedrooms soon. Maybe an iMac might be worth thinking about instead .

I have often wondered how well that works with high quality HD streams. Mirroring from an iPad is not so good, as in many cases the video is letter-boxed and unlike normal AirPlay (which has brilliant video quality even at HD), mirroring in many cases resulted in very poor quality video.

But is this different from the laptop, a) because the screen is already 16:9, and b) does a full-screen video on the laptop mirror at full HD quality over to the Apple TV?

There's differences on airplay quality on different devices and sources because it handles them all differently.

Examples:

Let us start with music and video that is stored locally on an iOS device. Music is streamed in the Apple Lossless format at 44100 Hz in up to 2 stereo channels (no surround support so far). In other words without loss of quality. Video streaming utilizes the H.264 mpeg format without compression (except the compression in the actual video file). The video file needs to be transferred into the Apple TV cache before the video file plays and therefore you will experience some waiting time. The faster wireless network you have, the less waiting time. Again, remember that we are talking about locally stored media files here.

When streaming from an internet source and pressing the AirPlay button on your iOS device, your AirPlay-enabled music system or Apple TV box will open a direct connection to the internet source. The AirPlay receiver (for example Apple TV, AirPort Express, or systems with built-in AirPlay) is being authorized to access the internet source and no streaming occurs between the iOS device and the AirPlay receiver, thus no loss of quality. The video or music quality is as good as the streaming service allows.

AirPlay Mirroring is different than AirPlay in a number of areas. AirPlay Mirroring establishes a video stream based on the H.246 video format that is continuously being streamed to the Apple TV box (and sent to the TV screen). This H.246 stream is created inside the graphic card at the same time as the video stream for the actual iOS screen is created, and that is why AirPlay Mirroring only works on newer Apple devices. What is important to understand is that this approach enables the video stream to be streamed directly to the Apple TV with minimal delay. Again, the faster the WiFi network, the better, as WiFi reliability is actually the real bottleneck here.

All in all, you should expect better quality through iPhone or iPad.

Watching AJS HD5 over a minute NetWorx told me;

Current Transfer Rate 314KB/s
Average Transfer Rate 307KB/s
Maximum Transfer Rate 409KB/s

Does that look about right?

With an ageing PC that wouldn't stream AJS and no other options available I was lost on the best hardware to use to meet my streaming needs.

It had to be pleasing to the wife and wire/clutter free. I also wanted something that would hook into my NAS to allow media streaming for movies. Also needed to be kiddy friendly.

Speaking to work colleagues I decided to build a Windows 7 Media Centre which I did the base build for a reasonable price and must admit I love it and it looks pretty good under the TV. Streams AJS seamlessly and has with MediaBrowser 3 have great interface for streaming films.

There's no stray cables and even a remote control......sadly the wife’s not a big fan of the Media Centre box.....it's sleek, black and fits in the cabinet. Unfortunately she thinks it's too big. But thats women for you.

I was interested in this until I saw that

Paying for something that doesn't work hmmm...

Anyway I'm still interested but would like to know what Netflix regions Overplay has? Could someone post a list please (tried googling already).

Thanks

Have a look at http://kylo.tv/ It's 10 foot media browser. Ideal for media centre PCs.

With the current iOS app, I can AirPlay from my phone. Quality is surprisingly good.

Interested to know why people think this isn't possible or why future versions won't support AirPlay.

I have spoken to AJS today and bad news. They confirmed Ipad app will not support Airplay when its updated this week. It's been submitted to apple so should be here any day now.

I did ask about iPhone and AirPlay but no reply.
I can AirPlay from the iPhone.

Here are my results

Current Transfer Rate 307 KB/s
Average Transfer Rate 305 KB/s
Maximum Transfer Rate 741 KB/s

My normal line speed is 756kB/s (6050 kbps) I wish I could change the settings manually to get about 4-500, getting pixalation on fast moving pictures

I went here, put in 307KB/s and hit Calculate

This told me it was 2.46Mbps

A speed test of my Virgin 30Mbps connection told me I had a steady 33Mbps connection.

The AJS HD picture quality has something missing. When the ball gets pinged around it's blurred. I can't understand why I am not getting the full HD stream

Slight correction. Germany, France and Japan do not have Netflix, so their libraries are not available.

The Germany and France bit from Overplay is actually related to their Zattoo service. Zattoo, are a bit like FilmOn or TVCatchup in that they offer live TV channels (BBC, ITV etc).

If you set your Overplay locale to France or Germany, it will force those channels only, though if you just have it set to the US or somewhere else, it will have all Zattoo channels available. (Normally, Zattoo is go-restricted as well) At least that is what I believe.

Japan is for Hulu. Not that it switches the library between US Hulu and Japan, but people who have a Japanese Hulu account would have been locked out if they were forced to the US library as they don't have access to it.

Hulu is amazing by the way, but that is a bit off topic here so I apologize now.

They have added 6 of the old SD channels now too it looks like
I see these on the website, but on the iPhone app I'm now only seeing News, Global, 1, 2 and +1 to +10.... although

+10 is showing HD6,
+9 is showing HD1,
+8 is showing HD2,
+7 is showing HD3,
+6 is showing HD5,
+5 is showing HD4,
and +1 to +4 are showing those channels.

All a bit confusing really.
