I'm using a vpn service. Just fine. Not a dns service
Akki, I know you're not going to tell anyone which VPN you're using but, if you do a speediest, what ul/dl and ping speeds are you getting when connected to your NZ VPN? Interested to see if I'll be able to get upto 4500kbps quality via my VPN, if I subscribe (you're getting 4500kbps, aren't you?)

By the way, testing PLP via their Samsung Smart TV app and it looks stunning. I'm seing the full 4500kbps stream on their catch-up content, and it looks really great. -hard to tell apart from HD TV!

Of course, it could all be different on the live streams.

don't bother with a VPN service , rarely if ever can it match a DNS service in terms of speeds to and from the site you want to connect too .

I've been using DNS services for 3 years and VPNs for even longer. The fact of the matter is, for some services, VPNs can be more reliable than DNS services. They can also be more widely used, on a variety of "foreign" services.

How did you actually download the application for the Smart TV?

If you have a D or E series Samsung Smart TV or Blu-Ray player, use this method here,

For the F or H series, use this method.

Every now and again, an F or H series requires the E series method, but generally it is quite easy.

The catch? You must change the smart hub to NZ, this won't affect anything on your TV but the smart hub (so normal TV will remain the same), but instead of UK apps, you get NZ apps. One of them is PLP.

TVNZ and PLP apps on the Samsung Smart TV both work via OverPlay's Smart DNS and 3Now (their main second network) is very likely to be added soon.

Of course, you may miss the iPlayer and everything else, but this can be switched back to the UK quickly. On an F or H series TV, it only takes me 3minutes to switch between NZ & UK stores. It takes much longer on older D or E series TVs.

Alternatively, grab a £10 Now TV box for the UK catch-up stuff and use the built-in hub for NZ.

Year, but NZ is at the very bottom of the world, and the furthest possible place from the UK. It is a long way to tunnel.

That, and last year the stream originated in Canada, so you will need to VPN to NZ, and then the stream must bounce of NZ and up to Canada, a long, way around.

Smart DNS will just do the "handshake" to NZ, but then a direct line to the live stream.

Good luck with VPN.

By the way, Smart DNS can also be used on a variety of foreign services, and all at the same time.

While you VPN into NZ, all traffic must go through NZ including when you browse the BBC news or something.

Using Smart DNS, you can have the PLP streams from NZ arrive on the same computer as Netflix from the US, ABC iView from Australia and NPO from the Netherlands, all while watching the BBC iPlayer - granted, not a common thing for one PC to do, but very common on a single network with many devices.

And that leaves the other advantage of DNS over VPN. With smart DNS, you can use streaming services on STBs or Smart TVs without the need of a DD_WRT router, and just an easy config on your TV's network settings.

PLP app is only available on 2013 Samsung Smart Tvs but apparently they are going to release one for 2012 and 2014 models. Yesterday I checked and it wasn't available. I have a 2012 model - Fingers crossed it will be released before Saturday but I ain't optimistic!

When I said "foreign services," I wasn't talking about programming. I was talking about access to foreign versions of websites, the ability to order good form those sites, find information that's geo-restricted (e.g. pricing of items, etc.)

If all you want to do it watch programming, DNS has some advantages but you're also at the mercy of the DNS provider granting you access to that programming. With a VPN, if you can select a server in that country, you can immediately access that programming.
I remember last year, I had wrote to Overplay a few times about accessing Star sports, which at the time wasn't supported by smartDNS. It was a few weeks before they set it up. I believe you actually convinced them to do so after we spoke via email.
Even then, picture quality via my VPN was far better on StarSports, than it was via SmartDNS.

I setup access to both VPN and my DNS service on every machine I use (where possible,) Not on my router, so there are no network issues at all.

There's no hard and fast rule. The ideal solution depends on many factors and and most importantly on how you want to use smartDNS/VPN and the performance you get out of them!

I've looked at the last few pages and people seem to recommend Unotelly instead of Overplay so I will purchase a Unotelly account, to those who are using Unotelly for PLP, did you purchase Premium or Gold plan?

Hmm. The vpn/dns speed doesn't matter though. Albeit- 1mb up and 1 down

Last season, using Overplay's smartDNS, I was maxing out at around the 1000kbps range when the max setting of 1500kbps was easily reached via VPN.

Hmm. The vpn/dns speed doesn't matter though. Albeit- 1mb up and 1 down
It must make a difference for a VPN. All the image data travels across the nework in a VPN, so the speed of transfer of that data is the limiting factor to obtaining the best picture quality (as far as I'm aware.)
You must be getting more than 1Mb up and down if you're able to obtain the 4500kbps stream. I'm getting around 7Mbps down so I'm guessing it should be sufficient.

I would also recommend Unotelly.

They did have 35% discount when you used the discount code - GeekZone - when checking out. Not too sure if it's still valid, you will have to try it!
Does anyone know when the code will expire as I want to give the SmartDNS a try on Saturday before I make a year purchase

Whilst watching the season highlights on my Android phone with PLP and Unotelly was fine, I found my windows machine was dreadful. Auto picked 800Kbps and even then it wasn't smooth. Remembering some comments about Chrome, I've just installed Firefox and Adobe Flash and hey presto perfect. Roll on Saturday

Yup, Samsung and PLP did a deal. They said no one else was interested and Samsung built the app for them in return for exclusivity, including the Android app.
