Does nbc require a vpn or would smart DNS suffice?

so far unblock-us smartdns works perfectly for me on iPad/Apple TV app and browser.

The way they have structured the payments this year it makes no difference whether you go monthly or full season. So I would imagine that if you go down the monthly payments, rather than full season route and then they decide to cancel your sub, you haven't lost out on the full amount.

Yeah this seemed odd to me too, you'd have thought they'd have offered some kind of a discount for those who wanted to pay up front. Looking at the deals it looks as if the $199.00 pass started 1st June and covered the Coppa America, but surely most people would sign up August and cancel May at $19.90 a month.

Can't imagine there'll be anyone signing up for the $199.00 option now, you'd be crazy to especially considering the risk they might pull your account without a refund.

was there any evidence that the taiwan sub was a greater risk than the Aus/NZ sub?

I had my Taiwan one pulled a few games into last season, so $49 went bye bye.

I don't know but anecdotally it seemed as if people who had their subs pulled were people who contacted them for something or other, giving them a reason to investigate their accounts. My brother had his pulled after he emailed them requesting information on a forgotten password and I know of someone else who emailed to complain of the picture quality and was promptly banned.

Maybe if this rings true with people, that they found their sub pulled after they contacted PLP to complain/enquire about something then maybe the key is to not contact them?

I had a Taiwan sub last season and was able to watch all season long so it's clearly a random thing.

Which is why going the monthly route this season is the safer choice given as Tony said, there isn't any discount if you buy a full season pass.

Did you use VPN or a DNS solution?

I had tiawan sub and went monthly last year using dns only.

I used Hola to get the Taiwan prices like most others before it got locked down and then DNS (Unotelly more specifically) to watch the games.

Re: PLP culls. I've hear of people using VPN as well as Smart DNS. Most seemed to be subscribing to Taiwan, but a few were subbed to NZ, some had contacted PLP, others hadn't.

It seemed to be related to a non-local credit card, but I can't be 100% sure that was what they used as not everyone mentioned their credit card.

In any event, as BMox suggested, there is a chance that if you subscribe to the monthly version, if they cancel your sub, they may also cancel your commitment, but this isn't guaranteed. After-all, if they cancel a sub based on a broken T&C agreement, the agreement also states that the payments will continue for the duration of the season, so there is nothing to suggest they won't continue extracting payments even if they block access - they've been dodgy enough in the past to cancel a full season sub without refund.

If they done this, it "should" be possible to get your bank to not permit future withdrawals by PLP, but it would be a messy thing.

I'm very inclined to recommend people stay away from PLP and not give them your money because of how they treated paying customers during the cull.

Just a pity there ain't a lot of other OTT substitutes out there, and as many people are saying, it is not the price of Sky that puts them off, it is the fact they don't have all the matches, and since BT won't sell coverage of their matches to anyone but BT Broadband customers, it is impossible for many to access most of the games in the UK... Sad really.

The bulk of them were getting emails saying that they were watching the games from a place that doesn't fall in NZ, Taiwan or the Philippines. I don't recall it ever being to do with cards.

Let's face it, PLP know they are getting a ton of subscriptions from people in non NZ/Taiwan areas. I'd also probably say that a lot of people still managed to watch a full seasons worth of games from PLP, but when a minority of peoples subs got cancelled due and they immediately posted about it on here, it's obviously going to get highlighted and scare some people off.

I wouldn't go suggesting that people shouldn't go for them again - if they are willing to part with the cash (especially on a monthly deal where the amounts aren't wallet breaking) and knowing the risks involved then PLP are a good way to watch the games. My experience were that they were a good alternative to NBC.

I did sent one message about iOS aplication. They asked me phone them about the problem. I didnt do nothing and my sub wasnt cancelled. I tought that i was cought.

I'm lucky enough to know someone in usa who has created a xfinity login for me, BT do sell to people who haven't got bt broadband but it's pricey i think £19.99p/m.
I would say avoid PLP after the way they treated paying customers last season, nbcsports or TSN are probably your best options unless Bein have improved if so they could be a good option too as they have everything.

But they treated me fine though so you really have to view it on an individual basis.

We are using alternate methods to use a service we shouldn't really be using so what they did they were perfectly entitled to do.

Good point, but I see it a different way. If I'm in a shop, and the staff treat the people in front of me like shit, but smile at me for whatever reason, I'd still walk out. They quite simply can't be trusted.


Again a good point, but in my mind, if there were to exercise their right to terminate a subscription, at least refund the remaining months. It was especially guile to kill the sub at the beginning, but keep all the money for the entire season - this is in my mind immoral.

Keep in mind, that the only crime the subscribers done was stand in a different location to where they were supposed to. They (at least the NZ subscribers) still paid their money to PLP, in full, and in good faith. They done nothing else that a NZ subscriber done, besides be somewhere else. That is their only crime.

Taiwan subscribers don't really have the moral high ground though, since they were pulling a sly on PLP by paying less than the NZ subscribers, yet trying to access the NZ feeds in English - of which I have no doubt is the main reason PLP got cheesed off and begun the cull in the first place.

But everyone was buying the same product at the same time and it's only after where the issues arose.


I agree in principle, but using myself as an example, I would never have known about PLP until I started coming to this thread. If I hadn't, I would be non the wiser.

haha, It looks like I'm on a mission to counter everything you've said which isn't the case as I do agree with it all.

I'm just saying that all of these routes to try and watch 3pm games are going to carry some sort of risk - whether it's trying to get an NBC account or signing up to PLP (whether it's through NZ or Taiwan).

I say that if you're worried about the sub going down then sure, avoid PLP. But if that doesn't concern said person then it is one of the better solutions out there to get your PL fix.

I can understand PLP not offering refunds for a break of the terms and conditions but insofar as those who pay monthly it would seem dubious under any jurisdiction to continue to charge for a service you're no longer providing.

I wish Bein was more reliable what with the fact it has the Champions League as well as other competitions, but it has bizarrely randomly geoblocks you at seemingly random times and then unblocks you later on but you never know if one of those times is going to coincide with a match. It's too risky.

Plus their player went from being amazing to being absolute dog crap overnight.

I think I will give the week pass a go on PLP, no commitment for a Season, see if it is any good.
I'd have to get a NowTV day pass on Sunday for Liverpool and one on Monday for WBA (wifes team) If it doesn't work on Monday I am dead

Stupid question here but should i upgrade my graphics card to get an even better picture with PLP??? My speed isnt a problem but doing hdmi from laptop to tv sometimes causes little judders.
