Hi. I'm considering getting a cat, but I live in a smallish flat and I'm struggling to think where I would keep the litter tray.*

I had already seen a covered corner one that I could possibly keep in my hall, but it would be right behind the front door and might not be ideal.*

Does anyone keep theirs in the bathroom, or is that weird?*

I've got a cat, she's an outdoor cat, but when she's a lazy arse (when its raining) I've got a litter tray for her, she rarely uses it, mines in the utility room, but did have it in bathroom for a while (building works) I didn't like it tbh, end of the day, its up to you.

Don't worry about it, a litter tray will probably not even be required.

I use a hooded litter tray for my cat with smart cat litter £2.40 from asda. I keep it in the kitchen by the window i get no smells and the cat has no issues at all in using it.

I have my cat litter tray right by the sink in the bathroom, makes most sense to me and fits perfectly!. Seriously it doesn't even get in the way when washing face/ brushing teeth etc and we've not dropped anything in it yet!

And easy to clean out when they have a poo, simply scoop it out using a scoop and flush it down the loo. bish bosh. (also means you can shut the bathroom door a bit and it's not staring everyone in the face from the hall/ living room/ etc).

Don't even think of having a pet unless it can experience some degree of a natural life. Anything else is just inflicting cruelty for the sake of your own self-indulgence.

Really, I have two indoor cats , they have plenty of space to run and play and have more toys than the average child and both are as happy as larry, which anyone can see by the way they behave. Oh and my two are far happier and safer than the cats I have seen knocked down and killed on the busy road I live near and far happier than they would have been if I hadn't taken them and they had been put to sleep .

However what your comment has to do with a litter tray baffles me or are you saying that litter trays should not exist ?

I have a covered litter tray in the bathroom. They don't really use it anymore but used it fine as kittens when they didn't go out.

I am sure you could get a corner covered litter tray. You can also get them with cat flaps.

Some good ideas there i like the bookcase one i'm not using draws in my bookcase so might take them out put cat litter tray in their place and build a flap for easy access for cat

I did this with a wooden chest of drawers I have in the hall. I left the first 2 rows of drawers in and removed the bottom two and unscrewed the sliders.

I now have a "feeding station" for my kitties where they have a tray to hold their bowls and also a water fountain and it's all covered and hidden away (and I don't trip over it all anymore) my teeny one loves it cos he can climb in and nom without being pounced on my another kitty in playful mode.

I have a spare floor cupboard in my kitchen luck would have it my housing officer made a flat check visit yesterday so i asked him if i could alter the cupboard and put litter tray in it. He actually said "what a great idea yes go ahead" so i took of the door and took out shelf and put litter tray in it. Cat loves it lol. Monday i'm going to get some fabric and make a curtain for the cupboard to fully hide the litter tray plus it gives the cat another hiding place as he likes to hide and dive out at you as you pass him lol.

Thanks for the replies. Some of the furniture ideas are really good. I could maybe do something like that in the bathroom. The thing is, there is no window in the bathroom. Do you think the smell would be noticeable with the right cat litter and routine? We had a hamster and I felt like I could smell it 24/7, even right after cleaning.

I think I'll give the actual toilet training thing a miss!

Nopey, Mine only starts to whiff a bit if they ALL decide to use it for weeing in (normally when it's raining/ snowing) then i revert to the "little and often" cleaning method (i.e. not fill it up loads and change it twice a week).

Also you can get soem excellent cat litter out there. I'm using a mix of Sanicat aloe cat litter and normal stuff and smells lovely. If you get a bit paranoid or have visitors and are worried you can get a scented dust to sprinkle over the litter as well.

Hamsters stink ALL the time, tis a rodent thing.

Mine has no window either, and my flat is tiny. No one ever complains about the smell.

I use catsan, which is a bit more expensive but I think it helps reduce any chance of smells, the cheap stuff is rubbish.
