That's what I thought but 3 listed the S3 as super fast capable on their website, which is why the user above with his S3 thinks he should be getting better.
There is two models of S3 that were buyable in UK it depends if he has S3 LTE or not.

Still seeing some strange signal things.

I'm currently in an area which I have 4 bars of signal, and is supposed to be a DC-HSDPA area, however I can't get more than 0.7Mbps download. It just seems completely random as to where you will get good speeds or not, as I sometimes get this near my house where I usually get 20+Mbps but then have random periods of bad speeds.

I seem to be suffering similar problems with Three.
I was on AYCD and never had a problem but since going on the One plan it's been horrendous.
Makes no sense at home I get 5 bars I do I speedtest and get 30mb download.
But I can only browse 2 or 3 pages and the connection just freezes.
Have to wait till it drops to 3g then back to h+ which takes minutes.
Practically unusable won't be signing up for another 12 months back to monthly.
I should add I've tried another phone with same results and I've changed the sim card.

Have you reported this to 3?

It's entirely possible there is a fault in the area.

that sounds like 3G timeout, this is perfectly normal on 3G to serve other sessions. You can force it to stay alive tho. but downloading a terminal from android store then doing a constant ping on google.

I was on the phone to them on and off for over a week.

I had a similar situation. The people on the phone don't seem to want to know about their possible network problems. The woman on the phone with me said there were no local problems and wanted me to go in to another area in a few days to see if it was the same. I'd been on the phone an hour by then performing all kinds of very basic tests. In the end I didnt bother calling back. I just setup my wifi at home for my phone to connect to.

Incidentally when I did go to another area the regular speeds worked fine again.

The problem they have is they refuse to accept there are problems in areas because they don't listen. So when you call up to say there is a problem they act like everything is fine, when for all we know 10 or 20 other people might have also called to complain, but nothing is registered officially.

I recognise that it could be seen as against the companies image to be registering faults on its service. But by just ignoring or dismissing people is only going to lead to more problems down the line.

It's getting annoying that these companies seem to treat people like thick idiots. Most people these days have a basic comprehension of technology. So unless they say they don't then why keep doing the basic things all the time, going around in circles.

Ok rant over

they only don't bother recognising faults if they think you're someone who doesn't know what they're talking about.

They try this with me and I insist there Is an issue, they come back and say yes there is an issue and its always fixed within a few weeks.

Same here. Only dealt with them once, but once you start saying some technical-ish terms and tell them what they want to hear before they ask you (such as another postcode you've tested) they soon pass you onto second line.

Back up your findings with second line, speed tests are a good way, and they usually take a look.

This is what happened with my local cell and they admitted a local congestion problem but said it would clear after a day. It took two days but still cleared.
