cheap student contract?
Brianlion

im looking for a very cheap student mobile phone contract deal, about £10ish per month, more minutes than txts.

one requirement is for the phone to have a FM radio, does anybody have any suggestions ?

Cheapest deal around is the 500 mins and 100 texts a month with a free Nokia 7600 on 3 from CPW. The deal is a £30/month contract with cashback by redemption. A lot of mins for the cash but the network is poor and you have to be sure you can live with dropped and failed calls. Customer service is also dreadful but at < £5/month what do you expect?

Worth a try as they have a 14 day return policy.

goto: www.carphonewarehouse.co.uk

Look on the main page, two great deals. 4.99 a month for a nokia phone (not great - but bloody good price) or £15 a month for the LG U8120.

Both are on THREE and have 500 any time, any network minutes + 100 texts. Some good 3G services too (some are free)

Only downer is that you have to claim back the money by sending back bills.

PS, just realised they have taken the nokia back down to 2.99 a month. thats 500 xnet/anytiem + 100 texts for 2.99 a month.

Just to give a less biased opinion: 3g on THREE in my experience (I have the LG phone) is great, good network coverage (though not always 3g, it uses GSM networks too so its pretty much everywhere) never had any problems with voice calls or texts. I think they sorted out their initial problems with the network, so its pretty good now. Have to agree that the customer service isn't the best, simply because I couldn't make out what the indian guy was saying on the end of the phone.

The old ones were 16-digits, 2004/5 are now 18 digits.

I go to Glasgow University, so we don't have NUS Cards (eugh!). But, you can still take advantage of the offers

From Orange Website:

“If you don't have an NUS number yet then you can still take advantage of our Student Package by calling 0800 079 3000. You will need to have your UCAS application number to hand when you call.”

MY partner just had to return her fone under the 14 day money back scheme. We thought the same and that 3 must have got it together by now and we were informed of this in store also, the fone was an LG, not a bad fone really. The problem was with the calls dropping and the terrible customer services. If its lots of minutes your after this is a great deal just dont expect too much by way of reliability, also watch out for some of the cheque back/ cashback schemes as theres a few terms and conditions that need to be taken into account before you can get your hands on it.

I live in an area with good coverage where it seemed to work fine but as soon as we went to a different area thats when the problems started. She has since took a Z1010 on orange and its much better the 3g video calling is great. its by no means perfect but a marked improvment on 3 and also you get 50 MB of 3g as part of your talkplan. So just remember that there is a 14 day moneyback promise available if things dont work out.

typical really.... you can only get like £250 on a credit card

... remember they also look at your bank accounts.... but still if you have the money - i do not see why they should reject you

and you hardly havemuch of a history to go by - given that your 18... dont they only start collecting data when you are 18?

what my uncle did to build up a credit rating, was get a credit card with a very small limit, spend say £200 on it, even though he had the money in the bank, and pay it on time every month. Builds you up a good history.
