Our dog has often had a dry itchy skin, used a few shampoos etc recommended by the Vet.
Went to the Vet again last week as he now had white dandruff ? starting in his coat
she said to try this new (to them) shampoo that's getting good results and after only using once his coat and skin is 100% better no Dandruff and his not itchy ..
I will be doing him weekly with it for awhile, but so far very pleased ..Best his skin and coat been for ages.

Thought it worth passing on, if anyone has itchy dry skin dog, says for cats too .. but not tried on a cat.

but i've heard good things about this product too, thankfully we've never had to use anything like this as we've been blessed with dogs who have pretty bomb-proof skin

aveeno cream which is often prescribed to people suffering from dry skin conditions has a similar active ingredient (apparently)
and that stuff works very well fro my friend who has suffered with eczema for most of her life

Johnson's Baby Shampoo is ok to use on dogs with dry skin.

I asked our Vet this when our dog first had problems, she said never ... it can dry their skin and make it worse ..you may get away with it once or twice if out of dog shampoo, but avoid if your dog already has dry skin

his not been itchy for a week now, had another bath today, he must feel so much better, and the weather being cooler helps too, his coat looks lovely. told our Vets today how this shampoo has worked wonders for him, they said they are getting very good feedback for it

What type of dog do you have?

I have a German Shepherd who has terrible problems with her skin. Its very flaky, her fur sometimes looks dull, grey and greasy. The amount of flakes makes the fur look lighter.

I use Melaseb shampoo which cost about £20 from the vet, but it doesn't make any difference. The fur looks shinier for about a day, then the flaky skin is back and the dog is scratching all the time. She's had skin scrapings done at the vets, and nothing has been found to cause the constant scratching. Vet said it was a "scratch reaction" whatever that means? She does scratch all day long - it drives me mad, must be even worse for her! She is front-lined regularly, her bedding treated too, and has 3 or 4 baths a year and lots of brushing in between.

I'll give the shampoo you recommend a try, as I am getting really frustrated and she's got bald patches where she scratches now.

You need to start looking at the cause of the dry skin in the first place - prevention is better than cure. Do you add any oil to your dogs food - what do you feed them?

She has pure salmon oil added to her food every day, on the advice of the dog breeder/groomer I use. Haven't noticed any difference to be honest but I keep going as its meant to be good for her joints too. Also use cod liver oil.

She is fed on dry mixer with tinned dog food and a bit of cooked veg. Given rice a couple of times a week too.

She isn't given anything like Bakers, as I've been told that the addidives in that aren't good for dogs. I avoid anything brightly coloured.

Yeah, anything with colorant etc needs to be eliminated. How long have you been on the oil?

try evening primrose oil, either capsules or liquid.

is the mixer you use wheat based?
has your vet looked intot he possibility of food intolerances?
wheat is a very common one in dogs. rice can also be a factor.



our old collie wasn't bad by any means, but she did have flaky skin and itched a bit.
this helped her out a lot with that.

trying the shampoo with the oatmeal mentioned here couldn't hurt.
as i've mentioned earlier in the thread, oatmeal has been found to be an effective skin moisturiser for human dry skin complaints

malaseb is a good shampoo, but it can be a bit harsh if overused.
