The whole relationship is contrived and has been so from the beginning. They fell in "love" after a week or so - I mean really? A week? Viewers can't connect with a relationship that has been rushed and built so artificially onscreen. Not to mention that both actors are piss poor (IMO of course) and fail to generate any chemistry. And it doesn't help that both characters come across as morons. I think TPTB thought that Lauren and Joey's looks alone would sell the "love story". But you need some substance to go along with it in order to capture viewers.

Now I'm not a huge Shannis fan (I tend to waver between Grant/Sharon, Phil/Sharon and Dennis/Sharon), but the fact that they are not related (and lets face it, Dennis never saw Sharon as a sister) makes it more acceptable. Like if Whitney shagged Liam- take away the fact that they were brought up as siblings and she would be done for raping a minor- it would be acceptable as they aren't blood related
