It's going to be hard watching him as the Doctor because you will be expecting him to say F this F that F you Daleks F you Tardis.

Not if he does his job and convinces us that he's the Doctor. I think he's a good enough actor to do that so I'm not worried. I remember him as the Angel Islington in Neverwhere, nothing like Malcolm.

It seems a bit unfair to Peter Capaldi for the successful character he created to call the thread PC's potty mouth.

Surely it should be Tuckers potty mouth

He also had a very potty mouth in Skins.. for those who haven't seen it before here's a video of his best moments. After 1:40 it starts to get a bit depressing though

He must love swearing.

He's just very good at playing those kinds of characters. He's very good at playing other kinds of characters who don't swear at all, just like him in his real-life interviews.

Well I've never seen the Thick of It so I have no problems whatever; but most of the others were pretty big names, Peter and Colin particularly known for TV roles they were identified with before they were the Doctor. We and they managed somehow.

It's called acting love.

It's not like they gave the part to Roger Mellie, The Man On The Telly.

"I'm the F***ing Doctor, right? Get in my w**kbox TARDIS and we'll F***ing ace the F***ing galaxy!"

Most viewers are comfortable with the idea of actors playing different roles. I managed to get through the entire run of Peter Davison episodes without expecting him to shove his arm up someone's arse.

I like the idea of a swearing Doctor, constantly having his expletives covered up by sound effects or clever editing. Plus, the Doctor could finally appear in Torchwood.

That would be very funny, if the Doctor seemed as if he were about to use a naughty word, and it was obscured by the Tardis noise. I hope they use that once or twice.

He was excellent as one of the wise men in The Nativity a couple of year ago and he did not have a potty mouth.

I don't think it will be. Once we see him as the Doctor, Malcolm Tucker will be a distant memory.

He's in a couple of episodes of Vicar of Dibley, as a producer for Songs of Praise. You would never link that character and Malcolm Tucker. The man's a chameleon. It's one of the most exciting aspects of him being cast - who knows how he'll play the part?

Having just seen him in Harry Potter 4 and ITV's 'Secret Smile', how do you think I was expecting David Tennant to behave in 'The Christmas Invasion'?

The answer is 'No'.

Wait, hold on...

By comparison, in the 50th Special will you be expecting DT to start going on about his *squizzle? Nope, though not.

Cupholder is a brilliant actor, I think we are in for a treat.

*he plays twigs in Tree Fu Tom

Considering it is a programe seen by children think any swearing or "bad" words will be kept to a minimum. River said "damn it" in TBB and 11 said "bloody" in TCM but that has been about it in terms of bad languge in reacent series.

For goodness sake, is it really that hard to understand that Capaldi is an actor, who plays different roles in TV, theatre and film productions for money???? That's his job.

The words he speaks when he's playing a part belong to the character he's playing, not him.

Malcolm Tucker has a potty mouth. What on earth's that got to do with Dr Who? Aaarrrggghhhh..

I've never seen "The Thick of It". So I won't be thinking of Capaldi swearing throughout
the known universe when he becomes the Doctor.

It's not really anything to do with the Doctor. It's about the strong associations that the original poster has in their mind. If anything, it's a credit to Peter's ability that he can make a character so striking.

Yeah, I don't recall Lucius Caecilius belting out a string of obscenities either.

As Randall Brown in The Hour, he managed not to swear even a little bit when having a nervous breakdown over the death of his daughter.

That's what I thought, and the OP probably didn't mean it in a negative manner.

Peter has been in so many roles, I don't think there will be any swearing in the Tardis. He probably will be a really mild mannered Doctor.
