Just been listening to this and realised how much better this is then most of the stuff female popstars peddle these days.

Whatever happened to songs with a story?

Gypsies,Tramps & Thieves was released in 1971.

Best year of my life, and Cher's G T & T features strongly in my memories of it.

Unfortunately, though,I associate it with a tragedy that happened in my community.
Don't know why..Just because it was huge at the time,I suppose.

And Papa would've shot him if he knew what he'd done.

I think there is a lot of narrative in Springsteen or Mary Chapin Carpenter songs. In fact there's a lot of stories in C/W music.

But I think you mean like Harry Chapin ( Cat's in the Cradle etc.) or Bread (Diary), Terry Jacks (Seasons in the Sun). I think the reason is because they are difficult to write.

Ha, the first thing I thought after reading your post was the 'blowfish' episode of The Simpsons where the man sings this song

Leroy Brown is another "story song", well I think so anyway. Poor Leroy, ending up like a jigsaw puzzle with a couple of pieces gone.

Anyone remember that one "Flying to Cambodia" ooh that was a weird one

There are plenty of story songs in country music, just from the top of my head, Jesus Take The Wheel by Carrie Underwood, Gods Will and independence day by Martina McBride for example.
I also like Gypsy for the storytelling and love country music for the same reason.

And Leroy Brown is a favorite from Frank Sinatra (although I like most of what I've heard from him (couple of greatest hits compilations that I have) rather than just story style songs.

Copacabana is another story song, although it reminds me more of Jennifer Aniston than anything else
