Started a new job a couple of months ago and I hate it.
I'm doing it mainly to update my cv as I was out of work for the previous 6 months, My question is, how long will I need to continue to make it worth adding to my CV ???

Until you get another job

Seriously, if you start dipping in and out of jobs, that will look bad on your CV anyway.

I appreciate that, but not sure how long I can stick it...I'm starting to get depressed and it is also effecting my family life. My first job was straight from school and lasted 21 years until redundancy, I then had a couple of temporary positions lasting 6 months apiece now this 1... I thought if I can do 6 months it would at least show i gave it a try.

I understand that as well....if you've been there two months and you feel that 6 months could be a cut off, why not look for other work right away, which gives you 4 months to find something better? I just think that employers have so many people to choose from, they will consider things such as loyalty when selecting people.

Minimum 6 months, ideally at least a year is what I've said to friends in the past. Obviously, you can start the process of looking now, but just bear in mind the interview questions may be a little more uncomfortable if you're looking during the first 12 months of a job.

There are few things more depressing that having a job you hate, but just stick it out for a little longer. Something better will come along.

I've been looking for another job for the last month. Problem is there are very very few openings within my field at present, hence why I ended up with this 1. I've got plenty of money behind me, with not mortgage to pay or loans etc..........its really about piece of mind and the effects its having on my health !!!

I would start looking again from now - you have nothing to lose by doing that. It's hard looking for a job at the moment but staying put and getting depressed isn't a great option either.

Just as a way of dealing with the job you don't like in the mean time, is there anything you've always wanted to do but haven't got round to, a hobbie outside work, now might be the time to do it. That will at least give you something in the week to look forward to, to help get you through.

I'm much better when I get home, the depression lifts when normality returns. However, the thought of getting up and going for another day feels me with dread. If I had recently left my 21 year job I would have walked weeks ago....The problem is made worse with the half a million quid I have in the bank !!!

Mmmm was just gonna ask how many threads you were gonna make complaining. Now I know you're trolling.

No I'm being totally honest, I don't even know what trolling is !!!

And yet you know you're not doing it.

I've literally just type " what is trolling " into Google.
I have to say, I'm still not sure what it means.
What is your definition of the phrase ?

I'd be depressed too if I had half a million quid in the bank.

Nope, no, wait, that's not right.

Just resign. The point of work is to make enough money to live and that's not an issue for you. Do something you enjoy.

One the first point, it doesn't matter how long your are in a job these days. Everyone jumps around all over the place and no one cares. I'm on my third job since this time last year - and no one has batted an eyelid at the applicaton or interivew stage. I'm earning more now than before in a much better job. Some jobs only come up when people retire or get promoted so you have to go for them when they come up regardless of whether you've been somewhere four years, four month or four weeks.

I was going to post nice, sympathetic advice as I know from experience how hard it is going to work every day when you hate your job.
But reading that the OP has said they have half a million pounds in the bank, makes me realise it's not worth bothering!

Why is it unreasonable to have 500k in the bank and also to be in a job you hate.... trust me, money isn't everything... I would swap it all for a return to my 21 year job. Well OK, I actually wouldn't swap it, but I would think about it at least.

It's more that this is your third thread on the same topic. There are a limited number of people who post on these boards so it gets old pretty quickly when thread titles are repetitive.

You must be getting confused with someone else, I haven't been on this site since I started the job.

No not me. Your threads are public viewing.

You're going to get the same answers no matter how many times you ask - you're very lucky and you can afford to make choices about what you do in terms of work. Nothing more to be said.

I have never before posted a thread about being in a job I hate.
And if your saying otherwise, may I correct you and call anyone who disagrees with me a liar, and indeed a Troll !!!!!

OK, if you hate the job that much, then don't do it. Quit, look for another one. If the house is paid for and there's plenty money in the bank, what's stopping you from just quitting? Serious question.

You are free to call me what you like. That's the beauty of an online forum - you get to say things you wouldn't say in life.

Your first posting was about whether to carry on working or not, given that you have £500K. Your current question is no different and therefore cannot generate any different advice.

Mmmmmmm, Read it again and you will see that I was, at the time, LOOKING FOR A JOB. That job has now happened and I subsequently hate it. I would suggest to you that the posts are totally unrelated. Looking for a job- in a job I hate, not really the same are they.....Dear god, and I'm asking you for advise !!!

Maybe stick with it a while, it might get better. May I ask what the job is? I'm sorry that so far some of the replies from people have been quite rude and unhelpful, that's pretty typical of the advice forum

Very good question...I suppose I got to the point of thinking I should get a job, being on a 6 month holiday is not all its cracked up to be......everywhere I went during the week, was full of pensioners of layabouts....Pride and self respect were also factor. I thought about working for myself, but never came up with a viable solution...hence getting a job and not liking it.
