If the phone came with say 128GB storage then that's fine as that's above the average storage size on a phone. But since 32GB is average, and has been on phones for 5 years. And phones come with a 2 year contract... it makes sense to have a memory card support.”
A memory card slot takes up space making the device bigger and increases build cost, it's reasonable to leave it out when the majority of people find it enough.
The fact is not every phone in the market has to have an SD card slot just because it happens to be a feature some people like, that's the advantage of Android, no reason to have 1 device fits all. Some people like 2 SIM slots too, should every phone have that?
