Radical idea for the singles chart - what would you think of this?
This year we've had some very low quality songs such as "We Can't Stop" by Miley Cyrus and the boring droll by Avici "Wake Me Up".
On top of that, the chart has been stagnant with songs as early as February stuck in the top 40. I feel this new idea could improve the quality of songs in the chart. Follow the Eurovision model by having a jury compile 1/3 of the chart which exists of music experts and a few members of the public on music forums as by lottery. Each act releasing must submit a totally live performance whether on YT or via the label where all vocals must be live. Failure to do so, leads to a three month ban on appearing the singles chart. Acts such as Chris Brown, with criminal records would be banned from releasing. With this it could improve the quality of the chart and allow less manufactured and fake acts such as Miley Cyrus to be punished for bad quality, What do you think? |

This is just your opinion. I quite like We Can't Stop.

I completely disagree with all of this. Even though the singles chart has come generic at the moment, I am sure it only a phase.
The music industry is a business and a market. By completely cutting it all out 'by punishment' you are damaging the industry in such a bad way. Surely a better tactic is to come up with a more credible alternative chart for indie/non-pop tracks. |

That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard, it should be about sales, and sales alone, just because you don't like it that doesn't mean no one else does.
I am in agreement over the boring, dull songs this year, however I just stick to non mainstream stuff mostly. |

WIthout doubt one of the most bizarre ideas i've ever read!
I personally love our charts as it's 100% sales. Can't say fairer than that. |

I agree there's a lot of rubbish in the charts, but this idea would not work at all. It would ruin the music business really.

No, thats changing the idea of the charts too much. It sounds like something that could be run by a newspaper or a website or something. The official charts is based on 100% sales here and that's the way it should be, I wouldn't be too comfortable with a panel of 'experts' stating what their favourite songs of the week are under an official title, and 'punishing' people for supposed 'bad quality'.

No this is stupid. Firstly the jury would obviously favour rock music, which isn't fair. Secondly banning everybody with a criminal record means most urban songs probably won't be able to chart anymore lol. Thirdly, it's unfair to make people do live performances, when it's the studio version everybody is listening to.
I agree with you that Avicii's Wake Me Up is pretty boring though. I wouldn't mind something being done to make the chart move faster, but this suggestion isn't a good one imo. |

The people who decide which songs are play listed on the radio are already the judges for music. They pretty much decide which songs are brought by the public or not.

Or...let the Chart do its thing, if you dont like it listen to something else.
Why do people get so wound up about the singles chart? Its not the be all and end all of music. |

The only thing I think needs to happen with the top 40 singles chart is to bring back TOTP twice a week on a Wednesday and Sunday. Wednesday to broadcast a midweek show alongside exclusive performances of new singles out in a few weeks and the Sunday show with the chart and singles out that day.

No thanks. If We Can't Stop gets the most sales, it deserves number one. You don't have to like every number one, but it shows that the majority of pop listeners love it.
If you don't like the UKTOP40 music which it looks like you don't, there are other charts to monitor you know. |

The point of the chart is to reflect popularity, and currently the best way to do that is by using sales.

This is like saying let's measure movie box office success by including film critics.

I can't stand most chart music, but I don't think annoying acts should be 'punished' for making music that I don't personally like. And how can anybody decide what's legitimately "good" music?
More importantly, why do you care so much about who goes to number one? Like it's EVER been a representation of anything other than popularity. |
