Looking to upgrade soon from my Galaxy S2.

Now, all I use my phone for is calls, texts, twitter, facebook, email and the internet. Have about 2 apps downloaded on current phone, don't use it for games etc...

With the network provider I am with it's 33 per month S4 and 23 per month S3.

I just wonder is it worth spending an extra 10 per month when the S3 would be OK for my needs.

Thanks if you can help.

Thank you. I thought the S3 would prob be more than enough for me. I like to have the unlimited data plan though as I used to go over the 1GB sometimes on my S2 so had to add unlimited. I get a bit bored at work and was on twitter too much.

Thanks again.

I would definitely go for the S3 as it's more than adequate for your needs and will be at least for a couple of years.

And other people please don't start on about firmware updates and getting the latest version of Android as it's going to be good enough for a couple of years even if it stays on the current version.

depending on your network operator... if you are with ee then they will offer you a lte one , if not... then... well.... not.

would not really worry to much. it will take another 1 year the least for 4g to be a standard , so I would not be worried about it.

Think Three offer the S3 LTE as well.

Yes it would be fine but as said above if you want the fastest Internet speed and to future proof the phone abit then make sure its the LTE version. If its not you'll still get very fast internet(network, location dependent) but not the full 4G speeds when its properly up and running on all networks

Actually pretty the normal S3 doesn't support DC-HSDPA either but don't quote me on that one I think it only does HSPA 21+ not a hundred percent on that one.

Just checked the Three S3 is the LTE model but for the price per month it is actually cheaper to get the S4.

Yeah, you're 100% correct - Three phased out the i9300 in favour of the i9305, which is marketed as being Ultrafast-capable.

PIB: As far as I know, Samsung have said that the S3 will be getting the latest update to Lime Pie (Android 5). The roll out will apparently begin around October, but all that hinges around the network operator and things like that. They have said that the S2 will not be getting Lime Pie, though. Having said that, for a while Samsung said the Galaxy Portal Pro (aka Spica) would be getting getting Froyo when it was released, but then went back on that.

As for it being good enough for a couple of years, I agree. I know devices that are still being sold with Froyo or Gingerbread installed (one of my mates in the US has just got a phone with Gingerbread on it) and the only thing that stops most apps from working is hardware limitations, and the S3 is fairly good in terms of specs.

If push comes to shove you can bite the bullet and root the phone (which isn't as hard as it sounds as long as you can follow instructions) and install something like CyanogenMod on there as they have a habit of managing to port the updates, but wait for a few months because there are always bugs for the first few months while stuff like drivers and whatever are worked on.

The S3 is an amazingly good phone (even better when rooted), and more than adequate over the next few years. I tend to hammer my phone and at the moment I've got BOINC installed and it's crunching numbers quite happily as I type.

***EDIT***
Just to clarify, rooting can often invalidate your warranty. Then again Samsung would have to prove that the update actually trashed the hardware and I know someone that took them to task over this and they backed down. Just something to be aware of.

Might have to wait for Google to release Lime Pie as well...so far they have not announced any dates at all for it.

I heard that the S2 is the best of all the Galaxy S ranges, for both value and reliability. The S4 is certainly not worth the money by comparison.

S3 is probably better now - especially on the used market - my wife got an S3 for 180 which is not that much more than an S2 but a lot quicker and a better screen

180! That's a good price for a phone that cost in excess of 500 not that long ago!

It's surprising how quickly phone prices fall on the used market. And this one was not in bad condition or anything either.

The S4 is better in pretty much every objective way a phone can be.

It is on a specification point of view - but does it make that much of a difference in day to day use? And if it does does it make the extra cost worth it?
