I want to get a android phone. Something that will use Facebook, youtube, a few games like Candy Crush, Bubble Witch and maybe the odd message board on the net.

Now I went in the 02 shop on mon and tues to look at a few. The guy recommended a Sony Xperia J and said id think about it. I went to the second hand mobile shop and he said get a Samsung Galaxy 2 as its got a good processor 1.2 I think where as the Xperia was only 800. He said Sony isnt always the best make as I mentioned it being a established brand.

I was tempted to get the galaxy but the memory card was broken said cards wont work in it. I know its 16gb memory but that did put me off.

When I went to the 02 shop I was met by a pushy sales assistant. When I said about getting a Galaxy 2 phone he said why do you want to get such a outdated 2 and a half year phone.

He kept going on about get a contract so you dont pay anything. I said No i had it before and dont want to go through the route again but he wouldnt give up kept saying you pay nothing now but I dont want to get a stupid contract. So he got his manager out to say whats so great about contract so just said ill think about it and walked out.

If I want to stay on PAYG that should be my choice not theirs. I feel sorry for someone else who had the same situation to get bullied into buying something they dont want.

Anyway what would you guys recommend getting? Dont want to pay too much for a phone but something around 100 is my price limit.

Ignore the advice in the O2 shop. they do not know what they are talking about as a Galaxy S 2 is vastly better device than a Xperia J (I wont go into details).

Also ignore the guy in the second hand shop. Firstly he can't even quote the correct processor speed for the Xperia J. And more importantly he is trying to sell you a potentially quite old phone, albeit one with decent specs. If the memory card slot is broken what else is about to go?

No. Just go to Car Phone Warehose and buy a Huawie Ascend Y300. Don't worry if you have never heard of the name they are a big company in China. It will cost you either £59.95 or £69.95 payg (the lower price applies if you have a qualifying payg sim card). It comes unlocked as well to all networks.

If you want to stick with the O2 network then I would advise you to use Giff Gaff who are owned by O2 and use the same signal. On Giff Gaff's PAYG plan you get 250 mins, unlimeted texts and 1gb of data for £10 a month which should be enough.

CPW also do the Y300 for £7 up on monthly contracts if you are interested.

I think you will be more than happy if you take finbaar advice above ^^^.

Buy the Y300 from CPW on o2 and you will still have your beloved o2 network should the phone be locked but 99% sure it won’t be locked.

Im ok on the 02 package im on at the moment. I pay a tenner a month and get 500 free minutes in my postcode area is all I need really.

Only thing im not sure on is with all this data I want to use what kind of pack of MBs I should get.

That link suggests a cheaper model of phone. At the moemnt Im using a Sony Ericsson K750i which Ive had I dunno 10 years now I think so ideally want a phone to last the same thing.

Is Samsung Galaxy really that bad?

The other thing im not sure on is ios or Android.

I presume ios is the more expensive route rather than the other .

The S2 is already breaking and could potentially be 2.5 years old now. Unless it was very cheap I would stay well clear.

You say you are happy with O2 deal and then ask about data. You will find O2 expensive for data so if you want to keep costs down Giff Gaff would be ideal for a tenner. Do you use 500 minutes?

You were probably lucky with your lasting that long. I never had such luck with my SE phones. Anyway yes the Y300 is cheap but it is vastly superior to the Xperia J and just a little below the S2. I recommend it based on what you said. If you want to spend more get a HTC One or a Nexus 4.

I think you need to actually think about what you want as you seem undecided.

At that price you would be looking at used iPhone 4 if you are lucky'. My advice is get the Y300 as it is the best budget android around. The Nokia 520 gets good reviews but I personally can't recommend it as I think WP8 is poor but you may like it, it costs about a hundred quid.

I went into Carphone Warehouse this morning to look at the Y300. Looks ok.

Are the specs better than a Galaxy 4 then or a Xperia J?

With the Y300 it only seems like its 1Ghz where other phones are 1.8. Pity the internal memory isnt larger that 512MB

With a £120 budget, you really cannot compare anything of that price to a Galaxy S4.

in terms of smartphones £120 would be lower end, and S4 being at the top along with the HTC One.

With that budget, id go with the WP8 Nokia 520.

The Y300 has a dual core Snapdragon S2 clockedvat at 1GHz. The J is a single core Snapdragon S1 clocked at 1GHz. Both have the same amount of ram. The SGS2 has a 1.2ghz Exynos 4 dual core with double the ram. The SGS2 and the Y300 run Android 4.1 while the J is on 4.0. The lower ram on the Y300 would only be a problem if you are doing lots of multi tasking.

If you don't fancy the Y300 then OK get a SGS2 but not a broken one. Also look at the Galaxy Nexus. That is a great phone.

I didnt know the SGS2 was only 1.2 thought it was larger than that.

Ive checked some reviews on amazon over the Y300 as at the moment this is what im leaning towards but some are a bit negative about saying it doesnt use google/android apps it uses its own chinese ones.

Kinda putting me off buying if you cant get the proper apps.

Essentially you get what you pay for. If you're on a small budget and you want to buy PAYG or SIM free, you have a choice of an older model, which is less likely to get updates to the OS, or a lower end model which will give you a suboptimal experience if you're looking for all the bells and whistles.

The best compromise suggested so far is the Nexus 4, but it's still quite a bit more than the £120 budget you put forward.
