Ladies and gentlemen, it is my absolute pleasure to welcome you back to fourth series of The Mix Factor!

It's been a long time since the judges were revealed along with the contestants from X Factors all over the world. However, the waiting ends today as the top sixteen will be singing Summer songs for you tonight! The mentors have had loads of time to prepare, so let's see if they actually made use of that shall we?

One of the sixteen contenders will take the crown from series 3 winner Samantha Jade and her mentor Jack in several weeks time. We'll see who that's going to be over time, so let's not waste time and kick off the live shows.

Please welcome the four Mix Factor judges and the top sixteen (with reminders of who they are )! As a final throwback to last series, this will be tonight's intro music.

_NiallDEE_ and the groups
Alien Beat Club
Fifth Harmony
One Direction
Orpheus

unclekevo and the girls
Bella Ferraro
Melissa Heiduk
Milou van Egmond
Karoline

bboy1988
and the over 25s
Anna Wilson
Dionne Mitchell
Josh Krajcik
Rachel Kramer

Soppyfan
and the boys
Josh Brookes
Kelvin Muis
Mo
Raphael Herrerias

Even though all sixteen acts will perform tonight, there are only 14 places up for grabs for the second live show. That means 2 acts will be leaving us tonight. Who those two acts are is up to the DS voting public and partially to the judges. The act at the bottom of the scoreboard once the lines close will be leaving the competition immediately, while the 14th and 15th-placed acts will have to sing for survival. Best of luck to everybody, let the games begin!

Judges, please confirm your presence on this fabulous new thread.

Whoops, please disregard the PM I sent you in that case.

Also, Kev mentioned to me that he might be a little late, but I have his comments. I have no idea where Stephen is, but I'm hoping that he'll show up sooner rather than later.

With 2 of the judges being amazing and attending the show and me having the comments of another slightly less amazing person, I think we're good to go.

Opening not only the show but the series as a whole, it's our youngest contestant - Milou van Egmond from Kevin's girls category singing Summer Song by Leddra Chapman, enjoy!

Milou van Egmond

Milou, welcome to the competition and well done for opening the first show. I loved the simplicity of the song choice by your mentor, cause it gave you a chance to show your vocals right from the beginning which is what I always pay attention to. This is the kind of style I can see you going very far with and I fully expect you to be back here with something more unique. Good start to the show.

Milou van Egmond

It's definitely a daunting challenge to do the first performance of the series, but I feel that you rose to it and this was a great start from you Milou! I loved your voice when first hearing it but I did have a few reservations that your performances might become a bit samey and dull after a while due to the type of songs you usually perform. However I think this was a great song choice in the sense that it suited you well, whilst being a fun and chirpy song that let you show a different side, I'd definitely like this see more stuff like this in the rest of the competition. I'm suitably impressed with this performance, well done!

Milou van Egmond

It's not easy to come out and open the show, particularly the first show but you did it Milou and you did it in style! That was a truly excellent performance, your vocals were really fresh. I know that Leddra has a slightly quirkier vocal tone than yours but I thought the song just worked brilliantly for you. This theme is about summer and that was a really summer, cutesy performance. Your tone is beautiful and I think that you have a long future in this competition!

Good comments for Milou to start with, things couldn't have worked out any better for her in that aspect!

Next up, with a cover of a really well-known song, it's our American man Josh Krajcik singing Everytime by Britney Spears.

Josh Krajcik

Firstly, according to Wikipedia this song was released in May and I assume that most people are like me and consider summer to be June, July and August, May isn't summertime so unless your mentor can explain how the song itself relates to summer, I'd consider this to be a rulebreaker. Apart from that, this was a fine performance, it was a very pedestrian cover and I don't think Scott's vocals are all that overly strong, I'd consider your tone to be much better than this. I don't think it was the best possible start for you though.

Josh Krajcik

Although of course Josh Krajcik and Britney Spears aren't the perfect combination, when I saw that it was a cover I was actually looking forward to it as I could definitely see it working well in my head if the right cover was chosen. Unfortunately, I was a little disappointed. I can see what your mentor was trying to do here but I just feel that the artist in the video didn't suit Josh at all, Josh has a quite unusual rough and gravelly tone to his voice, whereas the singer in this video's vocals are pretty conventional and seemed quite forced. I feel that this arrangement wasn't really suited to Josh at all and I think there is probably quite a fair few cover artists that you could have found who would have been better suited to Josh. There's also the fact that I'm not sure this song completely falls within the theme as it's not really a summer song and was released in May - I know it's only a month away from the months we were allowed to choose from, but it was a pretty broad theme so I do think you should have tried harder to stick within it. I do think you have potential to do well in this competition however, Josh.

Forgot to say that I'm currently in the middle of having dinner but I can comment on here pretty fast.

Josh Krajcik

Hey Josh, I'm not sure what to make of that song. On one side, it's a big risk for show one but at the same time, I wasn't feeling it that much. I personally think that if you had something that was more raw with a bit of a rock-side, maybe you would've done a lot better. Right now and of course this song does break the rules of the theme, I think you could be in trouble already and I'm worried for you.

Ouch, we're already seeing the different sets of comments acts can get as Josh got the opposite side of the spectrum than Milou got regarding comments.

On the subject of rulebreakers, I'm going to give everyone a free pass regarding those tonight. Stephen mentioned that he had been very busy and wasn't well in the week before the deadline, which is why I'm giving him pardons for any rule-breaks his acts may have. Of course it wouldn't be fair to give one person an unfair advantage, so I'm not giving out any rulebreaker tags to anyone tonight.

Anyway, let's move on. Soppyfan and the boys are up next. Singing another well-known song in Burn by Usher, it's the amazing Mo!

Mo

Welcome to the competition Mo! In terms of suitability, I don't think there were really any issues with this. The song itself clearly suited you well as an artist, and your vocals are pretty compatible with Usher's. The only thing I'd say is it may be a little safe and predictable, seeing as there's such a range of different acts in this game and lots of them are unknown I like to also see that reflected in the song choices and like to see lots of different artists being used. However as this is only week 1 I think that can be excused, and I think you should be safe after that performance!

Mo

Mo, vocally that was a very strong performance, I mean you're a soul singer and that was a soulful R & B cover. That said, could your mentor have found anything more predictable for you? It was so predictable Mo and you're way better than these safe song choices, your mentor needs to show why you're a unique and distinctive act but giving you Usher just makes you look like an Usher tribute act.

Mo my man, you were picked as an alternative when I ran into a problem with another act. I do not regret it one bit now as you were burning on that stage tonight even though we will take on board with what you can do. You could say that this song doesn't relate to Summer but it was released during the Summer months, so this is no problem. You could well be one of my best boys, but we have a long night ahead of us and I feel you have set the bar high for the rest of the acts tonight.

Mixed comments for Mo, with the word 'predictable' being said more than once in the comments. Did the public like the song choice or would they too have preferred something else?

Time for the first of the groups to take to the stage. Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome the only mixed group in the competition - Alien Beat Club singing Beach by San Cisco!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7pl2L-ldozI
Note: Arrangement will be similar to the original version, with the females singing the chorus and the males singing the verses.

I will admit that you guys were probably my hardest act to choose a song for, just because what you offer as a group is so different and therefore it's hard to find songs suited to you. I was really happy with this performance though! I think it allowed me to show something slightly different from what we've seen from you on XF before, whilst still suiting your unique style as a group. Well done for that performance guys, and I hope people keep you in tonight as I've still got so much I want to show from you!

Alien Beat Club

I REALLY liked this guys, this was so much better than I was expecting from you, I suppose often when you have a sort of urban group, it's easy to throw predictable songs by acts like Black Eyed Peas at them but this track showed off your quirkiness. If I had to criticize one thing, I'd say that the girls have better vocals than what the song did justice to but apart from that it was great. As a group, you're probably my favourites and I think your style is so versatile that your mentor is going to have a lot of fun finding a route for you as I can see you suiting so many styles. Best of luck, I expect to see you here for a long time to come!

Guys, I don't know much about you but that gives you a chance to show what you're made of. First off, I found the song choice to be catchy, but I think you could've done with a song that would give you a bit more attack and also favored all of the members instead of the girls as Kev said. But I will let that slide for now as it is early days. Secondly, I was impressed with the arrangement and you gave a reassuring performance. I hope you'll be safe and that you have something that will really show you as an early favorite.

Good comments overall for ABC! Will they be as popular as Audio Vixen, another mixed group who got very far last series?

Each mentor has had one of their acts perform now, so let's head into round 2 and go back to Kevin and the girls. Hailing from Germany, it's the beautiful Melissa Heiduk singing Amarula Tree by Amanda Jenssen!

Note: Amarula trees require sunny, summery climates to thrive.

Melissa, what sets you apart from the other girls is your raspy tone, you have the vocals of someone who has been in the business for years, you're probably one of the closest people to matching the vocal ability of Janis Joplin and this song choice complimented your voice fantastically in my opinion! I loved the moments during the song where you allowed your fantastic tone to come through and just let loose, your vocals are brilliant and your style is exactly what this competition needs, a ballsy blues rocker, that's what you are and you needn't be going home tonight!

Melissa, I was not expecting you to sing that song as it was a style totally different to what I thought you could do. However, that was very enjoyable I have to say. The song was catchy, upbeat and it put me in a really good mood which is great news for everyone involved. Seriously, I loved that and I thought this was the best so far, but I hope you get to do some dance songs as that is where I think you will REALLY shine. Well done Melissa.

Melissa, you're a pretty interesting act as the only videos I can find from you are about 10 seconds long so I don't feel I know that much about you as an act But from what I have seen I would say that this song was a good choice for you! I think Amanda Jenssen is a good match for you in terms of vocals as you both have quite deep and powerful voices. In terms of the song itself I wouldn't exactly say it blew me away, but it was definitely good enough for week 1 and I look forward to seeing what you have to offer to this competition!

A bit of a positively tinted bag of mixed comments for Melissa there, not too shabby a start at all if I say so myself.

Back to the over 25s and their absent mentor Stephen. Singing Burn by Ellie Goulding, but in the style of Leona Lewis who was originally set to release the song before it was given to Ellie, it's Rachel Kramer!
