I've noticed a small scratch on the outer edge of one of my DVD's. Will this small scratch affect the performance of my DVD?

Is the outer edge of the DVD were the scratch is the important part of a DVD which the DVD player reads when it the DVD is playing?

Will a scratch on the outer edge on the surface of the DVD be more likely to affect the performance of the DVD than a scratch in the middle of the surface of the DVD?

Data is read from the inside of the disk (nearest the drive spindle) to the outside of the disk.

Have you tried playing the the DVD to find out?

All optical media read from the inside out. Also scratches can sometimes be sorted by the error correction and have no effect. A scratch along the radius of the disk is "better" than one parallel to the disk edge.

As the disk is read inside out it is also possible for there to be no data recorded at the outer edge anyway. You can sometimes see a difference in appearance if you hold the disk at the right angle to the light. Often the recorded area looks a different shade to the blank area.

I would say that scratches on a DVD are normally sorted by the error correction, unless it is particularly bad. The DVD's error correction system is very powerful, much more so than CD's error correction system.

With opposite track path the second layer is read from outside in. (|Sorry to be picky, I see the point you're making).

I thought of that too, but felt it was too picky to bring up.
