I really like root beer. When I have been to the US or far east, it is a very common drink, in both supermarkets and fast food joints, however it's pretty rare in England. The only place I know that sells it, is the oriental shop.

Have you tried root beer, if so what did you think?

I like root beer, but certain brands. There is no "one" root beer in the US, there are many brands available and each has a different taste in terms of strength, sweetness and carbonation. I go to a restaurant that provides the 'syrup' in a small shot glass so you can add the amount of sweetness into the carbonation. Mugg is one brand I like, and the old A&W at their restaurants and their iced mug (not the canned version) is wonderful.

(only mentioning about the variety as US food/drink threads tend to escalate into a "i tried a hot dog once in Orlando and it tasted like crap, therefore all American hot dogs taste like that and are crap..."

I have never met anyone else from the UK who likes it. I have given it to several people to taste, but all have hated it and thought it tasted medicinal. It's very different to any other soft drink, but I love the stuff.

I love diet root beer, but then I'm American.

How does it compare to dandelion and burdock?

I love root beer, I was probably one of the few that used to buy it at Mcdonalds here in the UK before they stopped selling it
Sainsbury's sold it in cans a years or 2 ago, not sure if they still do, but it wasn't as nice as the proper stuff from the states.

There is a website here in the Uk that sells all things American, and they have various types of root beer for sale.

They also sell Welch's Grape Soda which is another favourite of mine

Just checked the major supermarkets online, and Asda, Tesco, Waitrose & Ocado all sell it. The only one that doesn't is Sainsburys.

I haven't seen in Morrison's or Sainsbury in my town. I did pick up a bottle in Tesco once, in the world aisle, but it was more of a weak tasting cordial. Like I said, it's only the oriental supermarket that has a decent stock in my town. It's very popular in the Far East, you get it in any shop or fast food joint.

I tried it in the late eighties and thought it was horrid. What flavour is it meant to be anyway? Is it a specific plant that gives the taste?

EDIT: ok, it is 'sassafras flavoured' - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Root_beer

Love Root Beer. McDonald's sold it until 1997 and then it became hard to find. I've spotted it in Asda in packs of 6 cans - I think the brand is Carters. I'm lucky to have a local shop that sells several different brands even though it's expensive!

I might try it with gammon.
It's really nice to use when making pulled pork in the slow cooker. Works really well.

I bought a bottle during the week from Morrisons. It was an old fashioned style brown glass bottle, in the soft drink aisle. I love root beer, miss the one the used to sell in Macdonalds.

One of my local Tesco's has a World Aisle and sells bottled root beer in the USA section

I usually get a bottle whenever I go there

To my mind it is a totally different drink to saspirilla.........I'm ld enough to have frequented the last Temperance Bar in my northern town ...........used to go after school and get a pint of saspirilla, brewed on the premises.

It was black and had a totally different taste to root beer

My Tesco also sells a US Saspirilla Cordial but that's not very nice and tastes more like Vimto than saspirilla
