What is the longest people have had to wait for the Samsung D500 from O2.

I've been waiting 3 weeks now, even though they took my money on the day I ordered it.

Best option check the status of order with online...i know that they were out of stock a few weeks back....call cust care and ask that you want to check if the order for the d500 has been placed and how long it will take to deliver

I upgraded my phone about 2 to 3 weeks ago and they put me in a queue but the order had just gone through to the warehouse now but they are out of stock. I should get it soon. I see they have taken it off the site to get rid of the back log. You should get it soon.

Is it normal for them to take the money from your account as soon as you place your order even if they don't have the phone in stock?

It depends. If your order went straight to the warehouse for dispatch, but was out of stock then I would assume this to be normal. I assume it was a direct debit. Just be sure that they don't start billing you monthly since you've had no phone to actually use.

Giving them a phone call is your best option.
