ZONE OF THE ENDERS 2 HD Patched (1080p + 60fps)

After the shoddy rush port last year and after many complaints, Konami decided to REPORT ZOE2 HD on the PlayStation 3, and this is the amazing thing, this shows the difference between outsourcing to a studio for a cash grab and doing the work internally!

What's changed, well, the rush port ran at 1280x720, and had major framerate problems around 20 to 30fps, now the game originally ran at 60fps on the PS2! So this was a major step back! Well straight off the bat, that's been fixed, the game now runs full HD 1920x1080 and amazingly runs at then full 60fps to.

How did they do that? Well, those mystical creatures on the PlayStation 3 known as the SPU's of course! Before, these ports were not using any of the PS3's power, they were essentially running on near the same code across the board as the Xbox 360 version, now you see what the problem is! Rather than devote time to one platform, they instead opted for a dual platform release to get the Xbox 360 audience, which in turn, made the PS3 version suffer (same goes for Silent Hill, MGS, etc), so none of these are really using the PS3's SPU power or work load.

Now, for ZOE2 HD, Konami have relocated a load of graphical effects to the SPU's along with FXAA and in cases a whopping 32xMSAA for Wireframes!! This allows the RSX of the PS3 to basically become free to render up and get a stable framerate. The more interesting thing is that Konami have also restored 8bit alphas into the PS3, 8bit alphas were what the PS2 used, no HD ports (or even PC Ports, ala, MGS2, RE4, etc) transfered these over properly, Konami have actually spent time (hey, if you're reporting the whole thing, may as well do it right!) bringing this back to the PS3 so colours and effects look as they should be.

It just boggles my mind how we all put up with these 720p HD PS2 games, and yet here, it's shown that the PS3 can easily handle the games at full 1080p and 60fps when it's done in house by a sub team instead of being sent out externally to a port team. Too bad we never got this much effort with the MGS games (though they were still done well) or Silent Hill, or curious enough, Sony's own First Party Titles, Jak & Daxter was a rush port as was Sly, even God of War only managed to do 720p (but held a stable 60fps), only Ratchet & Clank seems to be given the proper effort by Insomniac.

Anyway, just thought it was worth pointing out as we are nearing the end of this generation, someone has come long, just like Naughty Dog did, and pointed out that those SPU's are actually good when used properly! Of course this now makes the PS3 version of the game the superior one, and sadly Konami don't appear to be interested in doing this patch for the Xbox 360 version of the game.

Quite possible that the 360 wuld not be able to do it - Cell is 8 core, Xenon is 3
