The event BB used to polarise opinion was the fight between Dexter and Sam. For the most part, I see people who voted to evict Sam being those who thought Sam was hypocritical or deceitful or petulant. If we're talking about voting tactically, based on comments on Twitter, etc., people were openly talking of voting for Sophie or Charlie in response to people saying they were voting to evict Sam.
In regards to your second paragraph, I can't be sure what you mean exactly, but there has been a mass fanatical campaign behind him, just not necessarily
for him i.e. not always "from the heart". His popularity seems to stem largely from others' popularity, particularly if we take into account things such as the Appreciation Thread.
ETA: He also enjoyed the bias in his favour, and against the others, by the very shows that are taking the money from 'our' decisions.
