1 THE GREAT BRITISH BAKE OFF (TUE 2001) 7.17

The Bake Off is a beast! Fantastic ratings for it. Could we maybe see a potential 8 million for the final?

@C4Press: Ep 1 of Channel 4's #EducatingYorkshire has attracted a huge 4.8m viewers after 7 days of consolidation - 3rd highest rating C4 show of 2013

That is huge. What a marvellous piece of scheduling it was on the first day of the new term for most schools in England. But as reflected in these 7 day numbers, a show that can benefit greatly from word of mouth.

I'd say even higher than that, the final got 7.32m last year and it's already getting close to beating that.

Re the Steve Williams "not going to beat Countryfile" statement. It is an unbelievable turn around in viewing habits and the structure of tv that there would be any suggestion that Surprise Surprise would struggle with a format like Countryfile.
If Countryfile had been scheduled against SS in the eighties it would have been:
SS 15 million
Countryfile 8 million.
The potential audience for a show like Countryfile has probably not changed all that much over time but the LE audience has flung itself to many other pursuits/viewing. The only way Countryfile would have found itself in primetime in the eighties would have been on BBC2.

This looks good and Der Fuhrer is always a big draw. I think Channel 5 are trying very hard, what other station would you find a serious documentary and an Australian soap in the same schedule? Also what I like about Channel 5 is the soaps are done and dusted by 6.30 and they can provide a genuine alternative to the stale and predictable BBC One and ITV schedules between 7 and 9.

This series of Bake Off is already up considerably on the previous series. Barring some big football matches I think the final can build to 8m. I wouldn't be surprised If the regular shows got close to 8m too.

Educating Yorkshire is a great piece of factual. A true word of mouth hit. When Channel 4 makes programmes this good I have no complaints.

8.65 million for New Tricks. Great stuff, as always, although I did expect the consolidation to be slightly higher than that (here it seems to have been about 1.27 million, when in recent weeks it's been closer to 1.4) - then again, the past 2 episodes haven't been made available on iPlayer in some regions on TV, including where I live.

Coronation Street

Sunday
8.09million (inc+1 8.55million)

Monday
9.25million (inc+1 9.47million)
9.37million (inc+1 9.64million)

Wednesday
8.92million (inc+1 9.34million)

EastEnders

7.82million
7.64million
7.60million
6.70million

Whitechapel - 5.54million (inc+1)
Through The Keyhole (roughly) 5.04million (inc+1)
Vera (roughly) 6.5million (inc+1)

Although Whitechapel has time shifted 1.5million, I believe this will be the final series, unless ratings begin to rise, which is unlikely.

Well worth posting the first set of figures for BT's Aviva Premiership rugby union coverage in here. Because the improvement on what ESPN got for the same games is very noteworthy! Indeed I am impressed by what I'm seeing.

BT Sport - Gameday 1 2013/14 Season
AVIVA PREMIERSHIP RUG (SATURDAY 7TH SEPTEMBER 2013 1614) 116,000
AVIVA PREMIERSHIP RUG (SATURDAY 7TH SEPTEMBER 2013 1300) 82,000

ESPN - Gameday 1 2012/13 Season
LIVE: AVIVA PREMIERSHIP RUGBY (SATURDAY 8TH SEPTEMBER 2012 1330) 37,000
LIVE: AVIVA PREMIERSHIP RUGBY (SATURDAY 8TH SEPTEMBER 2012 1610) 21,000

So the 2pm game was 122% up despite a longer intro. The 4.30pm game meanwhile was up an incredible 452%.

Also from that game week last year, but on Sky Sports:

LIVE PREMIERSHIP RUGBY UNION (SUNDAY 9TH SEPTEMBER 2012 1430) 92,000

Meanwhile back in the present day BT's equivalent game on the Sunday managed:

AVIVA PREMIERSHIP RUGBY (SUNDAY 8TH SEPTEMBER 2013 1300) 75,000

So BT comes out very favourably here in a comparison with Sky. Particularly as BT's programme had more padding as the programme was an entire hour longer than Sky's equivalent programme. Had they been the same length, BT could well have equalled or even bettered Sky's figures.

In summary it seems as though securing exclusive Aviva premiership rights was a very savvy move indeed from BT's point-of-view.

Another case of "ITV got a good rating - it won't get that again". It could increase or drop against Strictly. It's got the lead on the latter so I hope it doesn't.

Family Guy: 958k (4.7%)

The Xtra Factor: 804k (3.4%)

X Factor's ratings so far:

Auditions 1: 8.78m (40%) / 9.20m (41.9%)
Auditions 2: 9.21m (36.2%) / 9.94m (39.1%)

Auditions 5: 8.65m (40%) / 9.06m (41.9%)
Auditions 6: 9.08m (34.7%) / 9.64m (36.8%)

Series 2-7 had 6 audition shows - would it be a fair comparison if you were to use the above?

The first six shows this year have averaged better than last year, that's all we know.

She is a regular on This Morning, as I noted yesterday. Though usually in the hub.

Holly was off because she has had minor surgery to resolve the problem that has caused her voice to be rather gruff since she and Phil returned from the summer break. Holly is due back on Wednesday.

As for The Indian Doctor the BBC site says the new 3 parter will be on i player soon (after Thursday's screening on BBC 1 Wales presumably). If that means everywhere and not just Wales then it will predate any daytime BBC 1 (non Wales) screening by some time I presume if it is not yet scheduled.

I think its a little difficult to know what the comparison point should be for The X Factor this year given that its started a little later in the year and half the audition shows are going out on a Sunday night. It all seems a little skewed with straight year-on-year comparisons. If we compare the first three Saturday shows this year and last year they're not worlds apart. Just a couple of hundred thousand separating the excluding +1 figures (at least with overnights). Although I'm not entirely sure that's a fair comparison either. Its all a little tricky.

Commercially ITV are getting much better value this year out of XF, it will be 8 high rating audition shows as opposed to 6 last year. Its working harder for them.

Quote:
“1 THE GREAT BRITISH BAKE OFF (TUE 2001) 7.17
2 UNIVERSITY CHALLENGE (MON 2001) 2.87”

When you look at these ratings, Bake Off seems so out of place, a 4m+ chasm between the first and second most popular show on the network.

BBC One execs must surely be salivating at the potential prospect of this switching channel and going out at 8pm on Sundays next time around.
