Its a shopping channel.
Top Up TV is closing down at the end of next month so 5 Later will probably launch in November. C5 will be able to claim back even more capacity so 5USA could extend its hours. Also they should get CH34 on the EPG due to proximity to 5USA so C5+1 could move up. |

![]() so am I officially off your ignore list now ![]() I guess you could say so. Nothing more to be said. Anyway, Doc Martin's overnights may be a little underwhelming, but evidently it's a good timeshifter - it's still pulling in 9m which is good enough. |

I think Waterloo Road is extremely popular with teenagers can't remember how well it does but it does very well. But I think when you're a drama that goes out at 8pm you should be getting 4-5m in overnights.

Endeavour series 2 has gone into production which means it should be ready for broadcast in early 2014. Hopefully this next series sees an increase in ratings, as this years were slightly underwhelming considering the reaction to the pilot ep.

I like watching Under The Dome it's well made and for me entertaining fluff
I want it to do well. Looks like We should keep an eye on Sleepy Hollow. @TVMoJoe: SLEEPY HOLLOW was the No. 1 entertainment show on Monday, beating the finale of UNDER THE DOME [2.8] Under The Dome ended strongly for CBS, despite a timeslot change in its penultimate week. And after years of bleeding viewers, Dancing With The Stars actually returned with some decent numbers. Quote:
Looks like there is definitely a SCD / XF clash on 28 September.
SCD running 19:00 - 20:25 XF 20:00 - 21:30 (XF 90 minutes on both Sat & Sun for Bootcamp) |

A very rare night for broadcast TV - lots and lots of good news! Bones tying last year and Sleepy Hollow performing remarkably well. When you consider that the super expensive Terra Nova got a 3.1 two years ago, that's a very nice start for FOX Mondays.

Very difficult for ITV there - the ideal slot would probably be to start at 8.25pm that week but then that sets a precedent by giving up the 8pm slot which they'll need in a couple of weeks when the lives start.
5.45 Fool Britannia 6.15 Celeb Chase 7.15 Catchphrase 8.00 The X Factor 10.00 The Jonathan Ross Show Would be a decent bet when the live shows arrive, as they could get Celeb Chase on air before SCD to lock in a reasonable number. Celeb Chase aired in the Saturday 6pm slot in 2011 and averaged around 4 million, sometimes overlapping with Strictly, so I think it'd be OK. Catchphrase would then get a suitable and reasonable sized lead-in and an XF lead-out, so could probably get a decent audience. X Factor would be on, and more importantly off at an acceptable time too. They've got 45 minutes more out of the audition shows this year than they did last year so they can afford to chop 15-20 minutes off those first couple of live shows to keep them at a maximum of 2 hours without losing out. |

New BBC comedy Father figure debuted on RTE last night, It is horrendous, worse than anything you would see on CBBebies.

The character has had a bit of a resurgence in the comics plus DC are releasing a new comic that's a team up with Superman and a new graphic novel so clearly DC are trying to increase her popularity, the head of DC Entertainment and WB says the character is a top priority after Superman and Batman but I think a movie is more likely than a TV series.

I doubt people in general have any brand awareness of the character beyond the seventies show though, which has less relevance to her now than the Adam West Batman series does for Bats. It's hard to see any of her baddies working on tv. I dunno, hope springs eternal I guess but that (all be it unfinished) David E. Kelley pilot was perhaps the worst single episode of any tv drama I've ever seen, and highlights all the difficulties of doing WW on telly.
Also I really don't think the David E Kelley pilot was that bad. Certainly it wasn't good but I've seen worse. Much worse. It was just one of those pilots where the bad buzz got ahead of it and just magnified everything that was wrong with it. Admittedly there was a lot wrong with it but still... |

Yeah, I think they're better off sitting tight at 8pm that night and seeing what happens. Obviously if it's a disaster they can move it in future weeks, but I really don't think shifting to 8.25pm will do them much good in the long run as they'll just be gifting the 8-8.30pm period to Strictly. Better to stand firm. They'll probably knock a few hundred thousand off Strictly in that slot too, and also avoid starting Through The Keyhole too late. They'd possibly get away with 9.55pm that night, but last year's Saturday judges houses show was 110 minutes, so Keyhole would end up at 10.15pm which would be too late. Plus moving later makes that pre-XF slot all the more difficult. Something like:
5.45 Fool Britannia 6.15 Celeb Chase 7.15 Catchphrase 8.00 The X Factor 10.00 The Jonathan Ross Show Would be a decent bet when the live shows arrive, as they could get Celeb Chase on air before SCD to lock in a reasonable number. They've got 45 minutes more out of the audition shows this year than they did last year so they can afford to chop 15-20 minutes off those first couple of live shows to keep them at a maximum of 2 hours without losing out. ![]() As for judges houses, last year had 24 contestants I believe. They had the same number in 2009 - that respective show ran for no longer than 95 minutes I believe. They'd have 24 performances to get through, so 4 performances within each ad-break is how I look at it. It'll probably run from 20:00 to 21:30 again that night, although if there's nothing much in the way of competition, they could bring it forward by 15-30 minutes - so TTK doesn't start too late. That first live show, as mentioned time and time again, shouldn't be longer than 2 hours. The only reason it should be is if they end up bringing back an extra 4 contestants again (which I don't see the point of). Last year's first live show was a bit of a mess - they brought out One Direction after the first ad break (was it?) for a little interview, a pointless one at that. It also seemed a bit padded out at parts. In 2010, they were going through live shows with 4 acts within an ad break. As you mention, Celebrity Chase could get the lead on SCD, and Catchphrase could work well too - a quiz show which people can play along with at home should do well. I'm not sure if that combination would lead to TV Burp numbers (5-6m), but it's possible. And it'd be better than the lead-in XF was getting in the lives last year of Take Me Out which was getting "crushed" by SCD. This way you'd have a decent number of people waiting around for XF, and you already have an audience there, added with its usual viewers who couldn't care for anything else. It would be nice to see ITV make a bit of an effort this year. |

Film5 would be a good option for C5.
They have plenty of films and tv movies to make up a schedule that would successfully compete with Film4. |

I reckon Celebrity Super Spa will fall within the 300,000 to 500,000 range. It faces heavy competition and the other reason for it to fall: its utter shite. Those presenters I literally wanted to punch in the face when I watched it within its BB sandwich. I will definitely not be watching again.

It would be nice to see ITV make a bit of an effort this year. XF will do just fine. The numbers on +1 will compensate the overlap. If people want to watch XF they will. It doesn't need a strong lead in. It's been on long enough for people to know what it is. Why would ITV waste a perfectly good ratings puller and lose potential advertising money just to "compete" with a show they can't compete with? You keep saying Samuel goes on about "crushing ITV" (I must admit, I even got fed up with his "crushing talk" yesterday) but your suggestions about "ITV making an effort" are largely the same thing. The shows they schedule against SCD will get a consistent 2.5m - 3m viewers. That is what ITV will be aiming for and as such they will have a reasonable alternative to SCD. After all until Christmas, it is XF that brings in the bucks. That is what they will be concentrating on. If it gets 10m viewers inc. +1 then I'd say they've nothing to worry about. |

ITV do make an effort. They have monster hits scheduled throughout the year that no channel can match. You miss the point about what ITV is. It is a commercial broadcaster. They are not going to schedule a show where they can get higher ad revenue against SCD where ad revenue is lower. There is no business sense in that. Like ITV, the BBC have monster hits scheduled throughout the year that no channel can match. SCD is one of those.

Agree with this totally. I would prefer ITV to put YBF and/or Fool Britannia up against SCD if it means higher ratings elsewhere for the other shows (Catchphrase,The Chase etc.), thus allowing ITV to make more of a profit (by saving their shows for less competetive slots). This then allows them to put more money into bigger and riskier commissions. The lower ratings before XF may boost Strictly and give some a chance to gloat over ITV's poor ratings, but it will only make ITV stronger in the long run. |

When I said I'd like for them to make an effort, I'm not referring to the fact they should schedule X here to dent X on BBC1 - I'm referring to the fact they can make their primetime line-up look better, and overall, provide ITV viewers with good alternatives to BBC1 around X Factor. Ad revenue is likely to be higher when they end up with, say 2 shows above 5 million as opposed to one. That said, I know they aren't about chasing ratings. Apologies if this comes across as a bit "over-bearing". |

I remember, but I've tried to forget. I think it started in 1988, and a lot of effort went in to the theme tune:

I remain surprised that the BBC haven't tried a Generation Game revival before now to be honest. Although I have vague memories of a version with Graham Norton being thrown around a few years ago. Its a format that worked for decades and with multiple hosts so it would seem like a fairly strong contender to be revived. It certainly strikes me as odd that Superstars has come back multiple times yet this hasn't.

Mm that's true. A heck of a lot of TV presenters learn their craft on kids TV. Now there's very little of that sort of kids TV so where are the next generation going to come from?
There are other places to find presenters and I think stand-up comedy is perhaps more prevalent when it comes to primetime than it has been in the past, alternative comedy in the eighties and nineties found that kind of thing anathema but the likes of Russell Kane and Chris Ramsey seem interested in that kind of thing. Quote:
Has Winkelman moved up to the big leagues? Also while Tess Daly co-hosts Strictly that's pretty much all she does. And its not as if she was selected to actually front Strictly Come Dancing. Her role on the show has been scaled up in recent years to cover for the increasing short comings of Bruce Forsyth and that only really happened because when the BBC tried to draft in another older male co-host there was a media backlash.
Claudia Winkleman is anestablished prime-time presenter, she did Let's Dance for a couple of years and she's always there on Comic Relief and Children in Need in prominent roles. If you took her picture out on the street, most people would recognise her. Quote:
A typical BBC1 weekday schedhule is daytime, news, one show,Eastenders, cheap filler/cheap drama,9pm slot, news and then repeats to end the day
I can remember the days when BBC1 had a vast range of programmes after 7pm right up till midnight I pointed out just the other week that Sundays used to have a never-changing schedule with things like Songs of Praise in peimtime slots by law. The daytime line-up is also far more varied than it was with regular drama and current affairs. In the nineties and early noughties pre-watershed was hardly a host of originality, there were about a million spin-offs of Watchdog (The Big Dinner, Healthcheck, Value For Money, Face Vale, Weekend Watchdog which was on for months and months and months and was bloody awful) and Holiday (You Call The Shots, Fasten Your Seatbelt, Holiday Heaven, enough to run all year round). It was basically loads of that and docusoaps which was alright when they were half decent like Driving School but not when they were derivative stuff like Lakesiders. As dicussed here the other week, Motorways Cops is a programme that's always had its place on television, ITV used to have Police Camera Action and for a while it was one of their biggest shows. Factual like this has always had a place on British TV and done well it's absolutely fine. And as for The One Show, it is incredibly varied and there's always something interesting on it, it's a chat show, a history show, a consumer show, all in one. It's doing exactly what Nationwide used to do, in the same slot. You say "cheap drama" and on the other page someone (you?) suggests BBC1 should innovate with dramas "on a budget". And a lot of the variety in the old days was created via nights entirely made up of repeats (compare the August schedules now to the August schedules in the eighties), and also films and imports which you don't get any more because people want to watch British programmes. If you want BBC1 to present non-stop copper-bottomed hits every single night of the week, you'll have to a) Get ITV to move all the soaps so they're not throwing big shows away against the big guns b) Double the licence fee I also don't know why these arguments are being used only against BBC1 when ITV next week are giving us in primetime a rip-off of Countryfile, a compilation of funny adverts and an interview with Gloria Hunniford. And I watch a lot more BBC1 than I do ITV. I mean... Quote:

As I've said many times I think ITV should use packing all the ad breaks into Strictly to their advantage and run some ad free family films (with a big promo push) in the early evening slot, with something like Off Their Rockers following at 7.30pm. Trouble I guess is if they do well ITV would want to put ads in them, but I think the bigger picture is if you keep the audience away from Strictly for it's first hour they're more likely to keep them for the 7.30pm show and then through to The X Factor. Realistically though I do think the Fool Britannia/Chase/Catchphrase combination is the best they can offer at the moment. |
