Excellent ratings once again for New tricks, against some tough competition too, confirming its status as Britains favourite crime drama series. Top boy is unable to cope with such competition, rating worse than its previous series at 10pm. Quite good for Cbb, almost 2million which is double the usual for c5. Bad for the Arsenal game, surprised it didn't even get 3million considering it was an important all-or-nothing European qualifier.

Arsenal were already 3-0 up from the first leg and with it being a home game it was unlikely they were gonna squander it. Anyway, it was all pointless because the team who they beat got thrown out of European football for two years today.

Just shows how well some dramas can do on Tuesday's for the BBC when ITV has nothing major to hinder its ratings. Its basically given a free run, but still an excellent rating. Next week we look forward to even more impressive ratings when Doc Martin touches 9million in overnight and 10million+ in time shift.

Oh and Samuel, i think Broadchurch might have replaced NT as the nations favourite crime drama.

I don't think anyone expected that match to rate well.

Autumn TV really hots up this weekend, and it looks to be an interesting one.

Have the BBC yet made the sensible decision to move The Voice to Q1?

ITV ought to commission a civilian Family Fortunes - maybe it could take over the 5pm slot from The Chase for a while?

As for Bake Off, I think that'll end up becoming a better rater than Top Gear (which they are obviously doing something wrong with as it's down from where it was a few years ago).

Broadchurch is a beast of a different kind. I don't think it's overly fair to compare it to NT. NT is a light cop drama, Broadchurch is an intense crime thriller.

Perhaps not the best comparison, but still both crime dramas.

Has New Tricks ever had any remotely large competition from ITV?

According to stats I have to hand, New Tricks has averaged 7.1million so far this series, about 0.4million more than Broadchurch in the overnight ratings. This of course excludes the thousands of viewers who would watch on iPlayer etc. Both are very popular, New tricks slightly more so for live audience viewers.

Just looking at ITV media top 10 for multichannel and found this;

Despite all its showing and repeats throughout the week on ITV2, on ITV and on the weekend it still rated well. This is what must bring in a fair profit for ITV on their multichannels.

Broadchurch added on an average of 2.3m per week in the officials though, NT only adds on around half of that. And yeah it does exclude iPlayer, but it also excludes the several hundred thousand that watched Broadchurch on +1.

Not that there's much point in comparing them as they're such different shows. But if you want to, then Broadchurch is bigger overall.

And in timeshift?

We will have to see what the Champions League group draw throws up. Hopefully something tasty to get those cake baking watching girly men back watching proper mans tv.

Sherlock is bigger than Broadchurch if we are to have a childish, my show is bigger than your show, contest.

You can't say New Tricks confirms it's status as Britain's favourite crime drama series just on ratings. Critical reception is a factor as well. If you really want to know, you may as well start a poll on here.

But, consistent ratings suggests that New tricks is Britains favourite crime drama. It is in its tenth series and it still manages over 7 million viewers. How long has Vera been going? Does it get 7 million viewers? How long as Scott and Bailey been going? Does it get 7 million viewers? What about Law and Order: UK? Or George Gently? Or Case Histories? Consistency and longevity suggests that, tossing all dramas into a pot that are similar, New Tricks is the favourite. Critical reception from the big big world outside DS also suggests it's popular. Why? Because each week these same people in that world yonder go back and watch it!

New tricks is definately Britains favourite crime drama. Even though Sherlock gets more viewers, that is shown 3 episodes a series, a series every couple years. Imagine how much tougher it must be creating 10 episodes per series and airing year after year for 10 years to a stable popularity of 8million+ even when theres cast changes. No other crime drama comes close once you take all that into account. It's one thing having a hit first series but it's another coming back again and again with ratings of such high value.

I think Broadchurch has to have rated that well for more than one series before it can be compared. I hope it will do as well next time, but we don't know yet. A lot of people I knew were disappointed by the solution. Broadchurch is one story over a whole series so people expect more from that story than the one story per episode crime shows like NT, which is much more about the main characters.

And because it's all about the characters, I think it will be remarkable if it can hold its popularity with such major cast changes. I'd guess there will be a drop next week, because much as I loved Lyndhurst he won't have worked for everyone - nobody does - and then I hope it will steady out.

NT has rated well since it started, some weeks even getting more viewers than Coronation St. It does well because it's entertaining and it's an unlikely police show, would the police really employ people over 70?

Does there have to be a reason? Does it need rubber stamping from the Ratings Thread Clearance Committee?
