I can't articulate myself like that...

It's not just men. We all struggle to find our place. I find myself less opinionated as time goes on, bizarrely. I'm not sure I like it. There is comfort in thinking you have the answers. I question myself...who would I be if I had a different upbringing?

How much is nature or nurture? I feel strongly that we should take responsibility for our actions...But then I defend them. We're born with a personality...we grow and experience...we act and react...

I feel every day I know less. I want to make sense of it all.

I'm just about getting to the point when I might have to make some life changing decisions. But I doubt myself too much.

Heck...who knew it would be so complex?

Just thought I'd nip in to say that the 'petulant little bag' thread still had me chuckling all the way round town today while I replenished the virtual biscuit supply.
I had to leave the bar at one point during lunch while trying to explain it to a friend, who was getting concerned for my well-being.

It was just how it sudddenly exploded into total insanity, with these tiny little outraged voices every now and again struggling to keep the indignancy going through the mayhem. Then Mrs Cloumbo arriving ... brilliant. And it didn't get locked (for which the mods deserve a very big thanks).

Best thread in about a week IMO I'm still giggling now

Hi flights

Did you see my reference to a programme about tea yesterday. I am not sure if you can access BBC programmes via the net on BBC i player as we can. But if you can I think you will enjoy this programme.

Ah, I was going to visit Amish country later this month, just for a day trip whilst visiting New York. Is it worth a looksee?

Dave I spat my tea out. BTW I think biscuits might be needed on the British Intergrity thread. It looked as if it might be turning nasty when I left 10 mins ago

It has been a good thread and I even interacted with posters on my list . But I STILL have no idea what the thread was supposed to be about.

Depends - that's different Amish country than where I live. I live near the Amish theme park:
http://www.amishacres.com/

The big draw around here is more food based, though there is some quilting. In Iowa it's the quilting that's huge. I don't know much about the PA communities (which is where you'd likely visit from NY), except that they're generally more strict. Then there's Southern Amish, in KY/TN/FL/etc - they're the ones who moved south because of so much urban sprawl in the north - like the Puritans of the Anabaptists.

Keep in mind, there are still some Amish sects who think photographing them is incredibly rude, so I'd suggest finding somewhere that's tourist friendly by design.

Oh dear. I wouldnt dream of photographing them anyway.

I got the feeling the trip I was looking at was Amish Acres. I will have another look to check though. It would be pointless me going anywhere food based as I couldnt bring it back through customs anyway. The quilts sound lovely but again excess baggage may come into play.

I don't think you fully realize the emotional turmoil this kind of stuff is for me.

Unless it's a place I know of by name, I have to Google it. Then when I see it on the map, I mentally tick back to all the locations I have pinpointed on my genealogy map. Then I have to decide, geographically, is it close enough to anywhere my ancestors lived to be insulted or not.

Since I'm about 750 miles from NY, it's a bit more than a day trip, but it's easy driving distance from Chicago.

You know what Birdy. I think what happens is that we get less opinionated as we get older and wiser. But the wisdom isn't about acquiring more knowledge but more to do with becoming aware of how little we know.

One of the shocks to me when I went to Uni was that as I learned more stuff the more I became aware of how much stuff there was out there and the overwhelming nature of its magnitude.I realised that how ever much I knew it was only a minute fraction of what there was to know. It has made me much more wary of being categorical (except in very narrow pockets where I know I have greater than average expertise).

Less categorical can be seen I suppose as less opinionated. Teenagers have the advantage of not being yet aware of their own ignorance so there stance is that they know EVERYTHING!

This is the UK - we are all close enough to be insulted geographically.
