Not necessarily this year. Our huge tree outside is already turning, and the leaves have been trickling down for a week or so. We've had really funky weather this year, lots of unseasonable cold when it should be warm, and unseasonable warm when it should be cold. Was a full week around 18 a few weeks past, now this week it's back up to 32.

Under normal circumstances, I'd say early October is best, but it's all messed up this time.

We're so far behind this year that I've got cuttings of last year's pinks planted months ago just about to flower for the first time, ditto lilies, and some fuschias are only just in full bloom. And the hostas are usually getting a bit moth-eaten by now, yet they are stilll flowering profusely.
