I knew I could rely on you for my pop trivia.

God that sounds disgusting. a friend of mine recently was going on about poor man's champagne which apparently is a sizable double jigger of gin ( home not pub measures) topped up with cider. Where is the sick smilie.

You would enjoy an essay by Stephen Jay Gould on mathematical theory explained through the varying size of Hershey bars since they were first available and baseball stats.

It's in one of his early compilations of his monthly column for Science magazine - can't remember which, but I can check if you want.
He also wrote one of the best popular science books, and one of the best books ever IMO, in 'Wonderful Life' - ostensibly about the Burgess Shale fossils of the Cambrian. Don't let that put you off, it's simply a wondrous, awed and awe-inspiring books on the wonder of the world.

An - you'd especially love his dance with language and culture in any of his books.

Gould is my god..

Don't think I've ever heard that version before. I only knew this one (barring the times it's been sampled/redone from the 80's on) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zQ6RjP7MlXk

That's a very useful thing to do, although not easy a couple of days later.
I'm currently working on downloading the whole of the BB forum since day 1 - it's not difficult, just getting the parameters right and a time and space problem.
I've already read the first month

Blimey you do like collecting stuff don't you. Still it beats lawn mowing I can see that.

I have a thread saved from last year so it seems you can get them back. Possibly not if they are removed.

Here is I am too busy....

I'd forgooten Paul Revere did it. That must be 67 (towards the end of their career) or 68 - which would be about when Loudermilk wrote it.
Paul Revere wasn't big in the UK - can't for the life of me remember which, but he only had one song hit national concsiousness if not a chart hit. (can't find my chart books to hand in this tip of an office I haven't cleaned since I got on here ) Pity, they were good - very garage in a Count 5/ The Seeds fashion.

Pretty well eveything must still be here.
If you go to 'end' on the threads, that's back to the intro thread in July 2001

I would presume the name might be a bit off-putting for a UK audience

TBH, I doubt even .1% of an average UK poll would have any idea who he was, or the significance of those wonderful uniforms the band wore onstage. They weren't coonskin hats and furs, so we didn't know the lyrics.

I can confirm as a spokesperson for the 99% that I haven't a clue who you are talking about and the clip that Flights posted also drew a blank. - Good lyric though

The band is Paul Revere and the Raiders. Their stage costumes for the longest time were Colonial war uniforms.

The real Paul Revere was the man who set up the intelligence network that warned any time the British troops were approaching. He's most known for the midnight ride where he warned everyone along the way, yelling "The British are coming!" - or you can read the Longfellow version in poetry here.

Now it's just one of those ingrained pop culture references, riffed on in commercials and safe for kid jokes.

I was a huge soap fan when I registered not so much anymore. I only watch Emmerdale and now and again Corrie.

Doesn't bother me though, it's just a user name!

But still wonderful history and still alive for those who learn to sit around the fire, gaze into the flame and tell the heroic legends to those who will listen

Oh damn, I've bumped into something, hit the deep and meaningful switch and can't reach it.

That's a lovely way to put it, although as we speak, it's also an insurance commercial

Funny you should say that.
In my addiction, I've started wondering about what happens after this series. Sure there's 'Little Court' and stuff, but things lose impetus and fade, and I'm not sure I for one am ready for that therapy.

I've been wondering about whether this little island will become - hopefully - another 'Antarctica' or the other similar threads (I'm being cautious now - people may be gunning), happily floating through until the next tsunami with people safely closeted aboard like some Noah's Ark until they can burst forth and multiply (or whatever ), or - in the case of some of us - rush happily to the armoury and well-oiled and prepared machinery and test it live

Obviously that would be best (not the armoury bit ). However I've wondered about simply setting up elsewhere so we can survive until it happens. Problem is, I'm not familiar enough with the rest of the forums to even hazard a guess as to where or what the incoming might be as a result.

In the meantime, I'm a little tense as to survival, I must admit Might be because it's early series days and war is rife so any thread is a target.
I hope (and believe with a prayer and crossed fingers) that the mods appreciate what we are, and that we're never malicious (and sometimes on-topic ) and will treat us as the other long-surviving threads of like ilk (not elk, dangermoose *tuh*) and give us that little space we ask to tend and nurture. We'll look after it, it just might be a funny colour and a bit wonky.

One way or another, I'm sure we'll do it - ragged, battered, smelling of cheese and old memories ....

Ah found the switch!

I hear you Dave. I had thought that the thread would naturally fizzle out in time if it didn't get pulled. Each day I am amazed it is still here. I am sure the mods have seen it by now not least because we have been told by one poster he has reported us twice. I fully expected us to be shut down yesterday and in fact had written a goodbye and thank you post. I am hoping that they have had a look and decided we are a bunch of harmless old buffers.

I do think the forum needs friendly threads cultivating if only to balance out how nasty it gets at times. This has certainly been a friendly thread and has given those that have taken part a chance to build a little rapport.

I therefore think one of its merits is that it means that when you bump into someone in another discussion the inevitbale ambiguity that sometimes arise with the written word is ameliorated. Having built that rapport you tend to know that a badly worded post or an opposite view point is just that and not an attack.

I would like to think it was valued in this way, so for that reason it would make sense to positively encourage the off beat threads. But I can also see that under a strict interpretation of the T&Cs it is an anomaly . I guess we can only wait and hope.
