The G2 is being sold for more than 1.5x what the Nexus 5 will cost. They have to do something to differentiate the models and justify the price of the "original" phone.

Nexuses are all about the software rather than being good all-rounder phones.

There's no reason the Nexus 5 couldn't have a good camera. When the Nexus 4 was released its bill or materials was slightly higher than the iPhone 5's (although i can't find any info on the N4 BOM i'm sure i've seen a story that pegged it at $217) and the hardware is still pretty damn good.

The iPhone 5s has an even lower BOM so it's perfectly plausible that Google could equip the N5 with a camera as good as the iPhone 5 and beat it in every other spec and still have a BOM around $220.

Comparing the cost of your flagship phone to the iPhone is a bit like a telco comparing their prices to BT - it will always paint you in a good light on account of how overpriced Apple/BT are lol.

Have to say, if the specs on here are correct I'm not sure I will be rushing to upgrade from my Nexus 4. Time will tell.

They MIGHT but evidence so far suggests that this is perhaps not likely! They don't seem to have even managed to get the very best out of the cameras in their previous phones!

Alfa Romeos used to have a reputation for rusting.

as a consequence they galvanized them all and they then rusted less than other manufacturers.

so that could happen too.

i would be surprised if there was anything to tempt you to upgrade.

I agree it's probably not going to happen, my point was that even selling them at Nexus 4 pricing they'd be able to include a camera of the same quality as the iPhone 5s.

There's this thread discussing the specs of the N5 camera from the leaked log and it seems to be very similar to that included in the iPhone 5. Whether it'll take photos as well as the iPhone 5 we'll just have to wait and see.

Though i think my N4 is great and have no real intentions of upgrading, i've been doing a lot of walking lately and taking photos while out and about, so if the N5 camera is really good i may well be tempted to upgrade.

Really.? I'm pretty sure every Nexus has been sold as an imaging device first and a phone second. What was the tag line for the Nexus 4? I think it was "The only camera you will ever need".

Christ on a bike. It is NOT about the megapixel count. It is the fact that if the swap out the G2 camera unit you can bet your life that it wont be for a better unit. Anyway we have yet to see the finished product. And I would buy it even if it didn't have a camera.

there is a story about today that the N5 will have a camera have a lytro like on board ability to refocus out of focus images.

i love the nexus 4 ..its simply the coolest phone so how can google improve it

I don't recall that tag line and neither does Google. (I tried searching with similar phrases and nothing came up with those either).

Google push the Photo Sphere element of the camera (and rightly so, 'cos it's pretty neat) and use the word "amazing" in that respect, but they don't really go to town on bigging up the actual camera hardware.

Faster processor, more RAM, better screen, better speaker, better camera, more robust, make it cheaper - I'm sure there are more as well

Better speaker and better robustness, sure. Make it cheaper?! The phone was already truly excellent value and then they sliced even more off the price - I don't think they could possibly make it any cheaper than that (before it sold out completely).

He was asking for ways to make it better - and I expect Google could make it cheaper if they wished. I expect they want to make a small profit though!

In my opinion the Nexus 4 is a really great phone. The things that would improve it for me are:

Larger capacity version - at least 32GB
Better battery life (this applies to pretty much every smartphone ever)
Better camera.

Other than those 3 items, any other updates would be updates for updates sake.
