I have a Nexus 10, upgraded from a Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1. I love the Nexus 10, the screen is absolutely amazing, and you get the latest version of Android within a week or so of it being released. The nexus 10 also has front facing speakers, which makes a difference when watching movies/youtube/listening to music. At the price, you really cant go wrong.

As someone else has said, you can always tether your phone to the tablet, to have internet access on the go.

If you already have a iphone, and have invested in apples eco system, then an ipad maybe the way to go. However the amount you would save on buying a Nexus 10 over the latest ipad, you could re-buy your apps from google, and probably still have quite a bit of change left over.

I would go into a high street store and have a play with some different tablets and see which you prefer.

I bought the Sony Xperia Z tablet a few months back and I am really pleased with it. I purposely didn't want to buy an Ipad because I am sick of sales staff trying to convince me that it's the only choice. The XperiaZ is a very cool looking machine. It's design is so slick. It is the slimmest 10inch tablet on the market at the moment and is very user friendly. The operation is effortless and there is no lag at all. I am in awe at it to be honest. Can't put it down.

I've never found tethering a big issue for data usage.

tbh, most places where I would use a tablet - cafe, pub, even some trains - already have wifi. And that's with a 7" tablet that I carry everywhere. An occasionally tethered 10" tablet I think is even less likely to make a big dent in your data allowance. (Unless you're a farmer, looking to use it to log details of cows, miles from the nearest hotspot )

I tether to my ipad mini all the time and I've never gone over my data limit.

Being new to tablets as well I would appreciate the views of the more knowledgeable on here to this one.
http://www.ebellking.com/pipo-m9-pro...-4-2-tablet-pc

Looks a great piece of kit, but really more than I am happy to pay if i'm honest.

I need a tablet to communicate to home when i am not there via the apps that I will be using on my lumia 800.
Use Skype.
Whats App.
Play videos.
Etc etc etc
Looked at the sizes in stores & the 10.1 seems a nice size for using at home where it will spend the bulk of its time. So in my case battery life is not critical.

Thoughts ?

Some good points about tethering. I'm really clueless when it comes to data useage, quite embarrassing actually.

In terms of future technology do you see tablets moving towards 3g or 4g or just sticking to WIFI?

I went to a few shops the other day but I didn't find the assistants very helpful, but it was good to have a nose at the tablets.

I think I'm going to wait till November, because looking on the internet, I know a few new models of things are coming out so I want to see them.

Thanks for all your replies, very helpful

Iv'e heard that the new Nexus 7 has finally got a screen that matches the iPad in terms of contrast and colour and smashes the mini on resolution and value for money so I think this is the one to look out for. One of my friends has ordered one and if it lives up to the reviews I'll certainly be ordering one myself.

Personally I would only consider max 7 inch on Android, the apps work pretty well at that size but it all goes a bit weird scaled up to 10 inch. I actually found the nexus 10 screen a bit disappointing in colour and contract at least compared with an iPad 3 or 4

I was wondering about getting the iPad 4, but I'm so used to Android. And the price jump is huge

Indoors, you average tablet has limited uses which may suit depending on circumstances. Even with a HD tablet like the new Nexus 7, the 10, the 1080p Nooks, Kindle or an IPad 4 many will prefer a laptop for indoors.

BTW many reports have the 30% more pixels, Nexus 10 screen quality beating the best iPad 4 screen available(the screens Apple buys are all OK, but as many of us know, randomly supplied to us the user).

I mentioned that light HD+ with its lack of GPS/camera in a pragmatic way. Even if an item costs £49 or £399, many an item will be just sit idle. Who knows?

Ive seen the iPad 4 and nexus 10 together, I know the nexus has a higher resolution(slightly) but the iPad is more contrasty and more vivid colours so the screen looks much better, especially for viewing photos. You could only tell the resolution was higher if you were looking at the screen with a magnifying glass. One you get to a ppi where the pixels cannot be seen from a normal viewing distance increasing the resolution is pretty pointless.

In the Nexus world the Nexus 7 and 4 are the best devices. The 10 has been a sales flop comparatively.

They have quite ginormous screens compared to smartphones.

No magnifying glass is needed.
Like all, it may end up as an occasional use tablet. So expensive being at a laptop price.

Not enough buy the bigger iPads either, despite people preferring bigger in actual use.

I do struggle to understand your posts? I have no idea what you mean by that last paragraph, surely people buy the tablet size that they prefer ? The trend is toward the smaller 7 inch. I think around 7-8 million Nexus 7's compared with way less than a million Nexus 10's.

I think iPad sales are going to continue to fall until they get a proper replacement with decent resolution for the mini. The 7 inch Androids are really starting to eat into apple market share now.

I've got an iPad 4 but I can't really see any scenario to make be upgrade to a newer one as I can't see that they could improve the screen enough to justify it.

What I'm saying is you need a magnifying glass to differentiate that the nexus 10 has a higher resolution than an iPad. I know there are reviews where one prefers one over the other or claim that the Nexus 10 screen is sharper but the reality is when you see them side by side to me at least the iPad has the much better screen, especially for viewing photos as the contract and vibrancy is much better. I couldn't see pixels on either so the resolution is irrelevant.

A recent survey showed that only 1 in 6 preferred the smaller Mini size.
Whilst low resolution is also a negative its also bigger screen preference that is much the norm.

People do not just buy what they prefer, they also buy what they can afford. I've always said the old iPad 2 was far better than the Mini and that smaller devices need added functionality(like GPS) to give wider use beyond their cost advantage.

I dunno. there's a massive advantage in being able to stick a 7" tablet in your coat pocket and take it wherever you go. Though I'm finding that I use my Nexus 7 far less now I have a 10" tablet, at least at home.

I think the 7/8 inches are good for outdoor use but at home the 10 inch always wins. I take my iPad mini out with me and its great for that but when I'm at home 9/10 I pick up my galaxy tab. I only use the mini at home to do something that I can't do with my android tablet. It's nice to be able to have both and at least in my case I think I need both. However if I could only have one I'd go for an 8 inch one.

I think people are moving away From the bigger tablets in favour of the smaller ones because they are more portable and because they are cheaper. The big iPad still sells well though. Google need to allow the nexus 10 to be sold in stores. At the moment it's virtually invisible to most consumers. It's only techy people that know it exists. If they got it in the shops it would do better.

There's a convergence, however. I have a 5 inch phone, so I can't see any point in having a 7 inch tablet.

I think you are the only one obsessed with GPS on a tablet as you seem to mention it all the time. Although useful, I could never see it as a deal breaker (or deal maker). I've never had a need for GPS on my tablet, but then I have it on my phone.

They(small tablets) sacrifice usage for portability, GPS need is a given for many.

I think it stupid for users to let manufacturers save 1 or 2 dollars costs and promote sales of a whole ecosystem. It is similar with Google leaving out an SD slot. That $1 or so manufacturing saving promotes other sales.

Plus you are not allowed to GPS tether your iPad Mini to your Android phone.

So you keep saying.

Why would I want to tether? I have a phone with maps and GPS. If it was a function I really wanted I would have got the 3G mini, but I'm wondering why I should be so disparate for this function.

I dont think he is. I would require GPS on a tablet. I may not use it often, but would require it on a tablet I was purchasing. It the current day and age, I think its a big mistake by manufacturers to leave out a GPS receiver on anything costing more than a £100.

Whilst for most people it may not be a deal breaker, for most it would be good thing to have. I wonder how many people know they wont get a GPS reciever, if they buy a non 3G ipad? Not many I would guess.

yup GPS is important on smaller tabs. And merely handy on larger ones

The iPad or the Asus Memo Pad series would be my choice depending on your budget.
