D'OH!

I'm not known for my patience, and sometimes that costs me!

Is it as simple as it should be? i.e., whilst recording on HDD, just pop a DVD in and press play? I'll go and have another look in a bit, but I got a screen message yesterday saying "action not allowed during recording" or words to that effect.

I'll check it out again, but I hope you're right, as it would be very bad if you can't!

What about recording two sources at once? I don't think that's possible. e.g. record internal tuner on HDD, external tv tuner on DVD. That would be quite cool.

<£400 Free delivery. Don't know about stock levels.>

Just had an email from Superfi assuring me they do have stock right now, ready to ship.

Therefore, I do have the genuine article. Not an import. Along with its Freeviw tuner.

Thank you.”

Sorry to have doubted you.......case of Fosters in the post by way of apology!

Shame about the lack of HDMI. I'll have to wait for the 910 and hope it's not too expensive. I don't want to pay more than £500-ish.

You doubted me too. Can I have a case as well?

Yes it is that simple though I think I used to the top buttons on the remote to switch the machine to DVD - so the yellow DVD light comes on.

Still don't know about 2 sources I will try as soon as I get some blank DVDs

I've trawled through this thread, so apologies if I've missed it, but can anyone confirm that the 710 does support dual-layer RECORDING ? (I know the 910 does)

Thanks Bill. Tried it earlier and it worked ok - not sure what I was doing wrong yesterday.

Haven't been able to record from 2 sources - started recording on HDD, switched to DVD but when I press "record" it says "operation not allowed while recording". I'll keep trying and trawl through the book again. Let me know if you have any luck.

Been following this thread for some time now. Useful info.
Just thought you would like to know that John Lewis Partnership have just taken an order from me for the HXD710 for £369 (2year warranty)!!!!. Not in stock until end of October, but I'm willing to wait for that price and warranty!!
Not sure if they will take any more, as I think they may realise that they have chipped in at too low a price! Might be worth a try if you are willing to wait.

John Lewis are well known for their fair pricing policy. I ordered a RDR-HX900 from them at the beginning of this year at what I thought was a very competitive price. Had to cancel the order in February (after waiting months) when I realised that Sony had discontinued supply of that model.

You had a lucky escape Planetnokia - I actually bought an HX900 and it kept freezing. Cost £467 at RGB Direct, but haven't had the use of it since June - kept shipping it back and forth to Sony repair Centre and finaly they said they'd have to replace it, but there was no equivalent model by then. Have been waiting till now for the HXD710 to actually arrive in this country.

So if JLP had in fact sold you one, you'd have paid £100 more than you needed to - and ended up with an analog tuner, no ability to split HDD recordings, and with a machine that was profoundly unreliable. (Picture quality when it DID work was spectacular, mind you). But it's only now that Sony are finally getting their act together as far as the spec is concerned.

Wonder if all the delays and confusion chronicled on this thread around the HXD710 and HXD910 have been associated with Sony's financial troubles and restructuring, as described on the business news: big announcement about job losses and change of direction due from the new CEO today.

Hi all,

I'm interested in the HXD710, but can't find any information (spec sheet) on the damn thing on the Sony site(s) like usual I have e-mailed them before I found this site/thread, but I wondered if someone here who owns one of these could answer a couple of quick questions for me:

1) Does it have STB Syncro Rec function like the 510 ?

2) If yes, does that work when recording to the HDD ?

I assume the answer is yes to both, but want to double check before I purchase one, as I primarily want this to record stuff from Sky onto the HDD and the STB Syncro option would make life a lot easier!

Many thanks for any assistance.

I have been reading through this forum and may have missed something along the way.

I am seriously considering one the 710 to replace my old VCR. Am I correct in thinking the 710 has a single tuner alowing one cannel at a time to be recorded?

Will the 910 have a dual tuner? If so I might hang on for that model to be released.

AFAIK these each have only a single Freeview tuner. The 910 gives you HDMI and a 250 GB HD vs. 160.

It's just occurred to me that I've been assuming that the 710 and 910 have analogue tuners as well as Freeview, but I don't have any evidence for this. Can someone clear this up for me?

If they do have both, can you record from both simultaneously?

To be fair to John Lewis, if they had have sold me a dud one I feel sure that they would have replaced it immediately rather than send it for repair.

Both models contain a single digital tuner.

This may help. You can compare the full tech specs of the analogue 710 and 910 on the Sony Aussie web site:

Sorry, this can be taken 2 ways:-
1. Only one tuner, which is digital.
2. Only one digital tuner.
(1) rules out analogue; (2) does not.

The Sony RDR-HXD710 and RDR-HXD910 DVD Recorders each contain a single television tuner, which is digital.

Thankyou I downloaded the Manual and had a read, and that model (the analogue one) definately does what I want, so I expect the D models will aswell.
