I've been reading this thread with a lot of interest as i've been thinking of getting a hxd910, however i'm now a bit concerned.... i live in a rented house with rubbish reception for tv, let alone freeview and my landlord isn't going to replace the external aerial anytime soon.
I have two ntl aerial leads entering my room, one for the ntl box to watch digital etc and another for channels
1-5 (without an ntl box). this is done so i can still watch terrestrial tv if i want to record anything.
After all that, my question is, would the hxd910 or 710 be of any use in that setup or should i go for the hx version? my recordings would all be done via the ntl box (for best picture quality) using the scart lead.

I don't see you have a problem - the future is digital. If you opt for the RDR-HXD710/910 you can record off the NTL Digital feed. If you later move house and don't have access to sat/cable then you are still future-proof.

I think that you are correct. However, you should be able to rename your recordings?

If it's like the RDR-HX900 then it can take program titles from teletext where it's present on DCAB boxes. Saying that though, on TW it's very sporadic.

I've a mate who's in a similar situation (though not considering purchasing a HDD recorder). His (landlord's) roof aerial isn't great. He has a Freeview box that picks up a few channels from it; he plugged a cheap set-top aerial in and gets all the Freeview channels with a good/high signal strength. Try that?

I agree with planetnokia (despite his recent slur on my character ) that you should future-proof yourself, at least.

As per the Sony model No of RDR-HXD710

I ordered the HXD710 from this company yesterday late afternoon and it has just arrived Great service so far. Now to open the box!!

I'm just a lurker usually but just wanted to say that what's been said here caused me to wait since before the summer to buy a DVD recorder and I'm glad I did.

Had a quick play in Sony shop and looks nice. Auto chaptering looks good. Gonna take a DVD in to do a test record. Couple of questions for those lucky enough to have one.

Does it playback MP3/JPEG CD/DVD's?
If so what's the interface for playing/viewing like? Can you do a random play, album (folder) skip like on some of the sony mini Hi-Fi's?
Can you copy video, JPEGS or MP3's onto the hard-drive from CD/DVD?
Is the video and radio audio recorded to DVD as MPEG2 so that you can playback on a PC? Or do the files get stored in DVD format at a loss of some of the quality?
Is there anyway of transferring the chaptering onto a DVD to play on a DVD player/PC or is this just done on the fly?
What's the recorded picture/audio quality like compared to the native Freeview stream?

Anyone (or any magazines) compared to the Panasonic DMREH60D? (Other than the obvious hard drive size difference and lack of SD card slot.)

When I went into the London (Oxford Street) Branch of John Lewis and said that I wanted to cancel my order for the HX900 because Sony had withdrawn it from the UK market their shop assistants looked at me as if I was talking a foreign language. I think that they basically just sell what they are sent so it does not surprise me that they haven't heard of the D710.

I am still mulling over whether or not I really need to buy a D710/910. I recently fiitted a Nebula Electronics Freeview Card to my PC (3.2mhz/160gb) and have since saved programmes to hard disk with a view to burning them onto DVD. I am not going to rule it out altogether and will be reading D710/910 user reports with great interest.

Won't be until Monday now as I need to get the techie man in my life to do the plugging in but we're away at the weekend.

Reading the manual is enough.

Now I have a dilemma which I hope someone here can help answer. At present I have both a Pace Twin PVR and a Daewoo Freeview VHS connected to the TV. Pace seems to have signal problems in some weather conditions and the sound/picture clicks (sorry for lack of technical terminology) whilst the Daewoo copes better with hot and/or wet and/or windy and/or humidity changes. I tend to use the Daewoo for everyday viewing but enjoy the Pace hard drive and interface when the weather is 'normal'.

Which one should I now discard when the Sony HXD710 is connected up? I should like to keep one.

Any help would be appreciated.

If the TV has limited SCARTs isn't it possible to daisy-chain some of the boxes and keep them all? You could get both RF aerial splitters and SCART switches if you really need them to support all the boxes and cannot daisy-chain.

Hi there all! I'm a long-time reader of this and other related threads but never actually posted before myself. I was wondering if anyone had managed to 100% confirm/deny Porridge's question about recording from 2 sources yet.

My gut feeling is that because the D710 only has one tuner it's unlikely to be designed to allow simultaneous recording but if it can then I think I'll be buying one too.

Just like tons of others I've been waiting for the elusive HDD/DVDR/2xDTT combo unit and the D710/D910 are both sooo close it hurts! If either machine will allow me to simultaneously record from my existing STB (if plugged into the back thru an RGB SCART input) then that's close enough for me!

So, in short, if someone can let me know if my search is over then that would be just dandy

I so hate to disappoint, but alas I'm going to anyway.

I have tried and tried, but I just can't record two things at once. I have a Freeview telly, which I can record from on either HDD or DVD (nothing mind-blowing there), and the Freeview tuner in the 710, which will also record onto either HDD or DVD - but it just won't let me do the two together. I think Sony have missed (another) trick here as it surely can't be that difficult?

However, I still have my old VHS and Freeview box in the back room, so on the odd occasion when there's two things on worth recording I can go all "retro" and video it

You can download a copy of the instruction manual for the analogue 710 from the OZ SONY site (see link prev page). Unless that says you can do it, then you can't..........unless someone knows a work-around?

Curses! It says "Simultaneous Record & Playback" which sounded good at first but all that means is it can record on one while playing back on the other and we know it can do that already

O well, looks like it's back to waiting for me - and I was so excited about these machines... *sob*


...bit of a leading question but I'm sure someone somewhere mentioned a D1010 in the works. Is this just hearsay or is there any hard evidence? Maybe that one will have 2 tuners... *drool*

Bah - they talk about both units collectively! It says "Thanks to the Integrated Digital Terrestrial tuners" which for a second makes you think they've each got 2 until you realise they're referring to one per unit. Talk about rubbing it in!

Thanks. I've now got the Sony connected up - just in the interest of ease I've disconnected the Pace and Daewoo for now - and it's eventually working! I'm not convinced that I've mastered the controls and have now got the TV on by dint of good luck.

One more question how do I get the usual subtitles up for the TV. I'm a bit corned beef and like to have the titles up sometimes. Can't find them... but am prepared to admit my dimness in this area.
