A pvr with more hard drive space, 2 freeview tuners (a card slot would be nice as well - just in case topuptv or anyone else gets a worthwhile channel on there), with dvd "dual layer" +/- burner built in would be a dream machine for me. A possible upgrade from my Thomson pvr....which in turn could go on the other big tv.

Remove 1 or both freeview tuners, and its a no go.
£300 - bargin.
£400-£500 - uper end the price range. Maybe wait for a price cut.
Above £500 - too much.

The details state they have a Freeview tuner, but the pictures are of the models without the D in the HXD part of the model number. Make of that what you will!
The new slimline models don't look as classy as the models they replace. Let us hope that internally Sony have not cut corners on electronic components when digitizing the tuner. I checked with another Sony Dealer this week regarding avaiability. He said that it's all hush-hush about these models but we are still going to have to hold our breath til Sep/Oct.

I like the look of them! Sony and Panasonic seem to moving towards a Pioneer look with their new models. They all seem to be getting slimmer. I also think whichever company brings out a combined DVDR/HDD/Freeview recorder that works, will make a fortune!

Any indications whether or not these new Sonys will have proper editing functions? Without "Divide" capability their value will be considerably diminshed for those who want to archive (e.g. from Sky+)

The handout supplied by Sony to their dealers contains only the very barest of detail regarding their capabilities.

The word from Sony UK is that these will have enhanced editing facilities including Divide. As always such information is quoted as provisional but it is encouraging

Can you confirm your source or has Mr Yakamoto asked you not to mention his name?

Customer Services at Sony UK. He also pointed to www.products.sony.co.uk which is a new site where the first official news will be posted (it is not there yet!)

I could mention the individual's name (and will do if you request by PM) but it seems fair not to in a public forum. What I will say is when I contacted SUK asking for advice / comment about the lack of divide facility, rather than spouting some sort of pre-recorded message about the wonderful features the Sony did have, he tried to address my question with helpful solutions. In the end he accepted that he / Sony could not help me. A bit like a politician - NOT.

My point is that I have some degree of confidence in what I have been told. That means either I am naive or I have experienced a customer service ethic above and beyond that which we seem to experience today.

Time will tell of course and this information was provisional. when I first contacted Sony it was clear that the Divide issue was well known so it would make sense they have responded to customer demand. Now we just have to persuade then to launch earlier!.........and at sensible prices.

It's ok, I'm only joking about the name. However, you have to bear in mind when reading news like this that the Sony Media arm wields more power than the Hardware arm and I cannot see them allowing powerful editing utilities to be included in hardware sold outside Japan.

Point taken - but I do not think I intended to imply "powerful" editing features. Simply features that would bring Sony up to the same level as the competition. If I was them though, I would try to offer some competitive advantage other than the perception of the brand. Phelings may comment at this point...

I for one cannot imagine Sony not including a divide, as not to do so would hardly do Sony prestiege any good and would certainly leave potential customers with a choice of another manufacturer who does provide the function.

Even though Sony produce kit of fantastic spec and quality, I wouldn't put it past them not including DIVIDE. Afterall you cannot drag'n'drop MP3 files onto their new HD3 MP3 Player.

Also Avland are saying May for the 710 and August for the 910, which is not what I beleive Sony Centres have been told.
Let's hope the release dates have been brought forward.
Perhaps with no machine in the market with the smaller HD, now the 900 has gone, Sony are keen not to let others in. Philips for example, are looking good with their new recorder (no HD) but who may have an HD machine for release soon.

Here are AVLAND's "tentative" details for the RDR-HX510:

http://www.avland.co.uk/sony/rdrhx510/rdrhx510.htm

If it's true, then what really disappoints me is this:

o Built in Analogue Tuner

Why, Sony, why? At £400 I can't really see how it's worth the money when one can get a PVR with twin digital tuners and a half decent DVD recorder for around the same cost. Am I missing something here?

As reported earlier, the model numbers for the 710 and 910 have indeed been changed to RDR-HXDxxx to underline their digitalness.

Anyone noticed that the afm have removed all their DVD recorders from their site with the exception of the RDR-GXD500 Freeview version? Hm... must mean we are about to see more definite information on the models from this thread pretty soon - well lets hope at least!

doverrog - are you sure? Just had a look again; no mention of the 210 and 510, only mention of "previous models" and the "current" model! Happy Easter any way

Sony Centre in Southampton today:

The HXD510 is "probably a month away". It is "showing in our system" and is in the in-store catalogue at £399. Contrary to Avland it shows with digital tuner (just one). 80gig HD

Was advised to call next week when they would have more information. - lets wait and see!

Oh yes: +- R/RW (not RAM of course) and can read dual layer +R. Not sure if it can write dual layer +R though. Sony have also stated in the past that the new ones will have "Divide", but that remains to be seen.

I've just spoken to my local Sony Centre (Maidstone) and they say that the 510 has 80 HD BUT ANALOGUE!!! Tuner and is due out June.
The 710 with 160 HD and Freeview Tuner is due September.
The 910 with 250 HD and Freeview Tuner is due October.
The 910 will have HDMI and all three have iLink.
No prices available yet.
So looks as though it's still September/October for anything good.
