OK, but this doesn't answer the question whether we can specify the subtitles option when using the timer or using the EPG to record a programme.

Would anyone like to volunteer to write a FAQ for the Sony RDR-HXD710/910? A lot of people seem to asking the same questions, and the thread is getting fairly long! I would offer to do it myself but I don't actually own a 710... yet.

Read all the posts I've sent. I've answered a load of questions and suggested various ways of getting around certain things. Click on my name and select pother posts sent by me. I've had this bad boy since it's release.

Apologies if the answer is already somewhere in this thread but could omeone tell me the best DVDs I could get to dub onto from my D710 (both type and make)? I haven't bought any yet and would soon like to save some of the material I currently have on the hard disk. Thanks

You can't.

I've just bought 10 Sony DVD-R's 1-8 speed from Asda in slim cases for £7.99. Can't get better than Sony in a Sony machine by my reckoning.

In theory that's what the "search this thread" button is for at the top right. Only problem is that no one ever uses it. I fear that even if one pulled all the "good info" into a FAQ then unless it could be made "sticky" somehow then equally no one would ever stop to look at that either and, in fact, in my experience newbies tend to ignore "sticky" threads anyway. Ho hum.

I use the search button all the time. It's a useful timesaving tool.

Does anyone know if I hook up an external DVD player into a 710/910, would I be able to record it onto the HDD ?

It might be useful to copy some of my old VHS movies.

I'm assuming that it wouldn't let me copy from the internal DVD player ??

I don't think you can record commercially produced DVDs/VCRs (with copy protection) onto any Sony DVD Recorder. However, with the right software tools you can copy DVDs onto your PC.

Just wondered, have the 710/910 handled the EPG reshuffle succesfully?

Sony's last freeview box & iDTVs could only handle 2-digit channels (99) rather than the new Freeview EPG of 3-digit channels (999) which are currently running into problems elswhere on the boards.

if I understand correctly there is no such option, and then the only way to record subtitles when using the timer is to have them switched on before hand ?
Is that correct ? or only live recording can have subtitles ?

How does the screen look when you use the EPG ? do you have the current channel in a small window with the sound or a full page PG without image and sound as it seems to be the case with the Panasonic ?

Thank you

PS I'm using also a lot "Search in the Thread", but this thread is now to long.

You can't record any pressed DVD, even if it's not copy protected (I tried this with a Fiona Cooper DVD, which don't have copy protection)

I've had no problems with my RDR-HXD710, it works fine with the teletext channel on 100.

When you use the EPG you get a full screen PG with no window showing the channel, you do however get the sound from the channel you were just on.

There is no option in the timer screen to switch subtitles on. Don't know the answer to your other 2 questions but I'll give both options a whirl later.

Pricerunner now has an entry for the Sony RDR-HXD910 at £650 from Superfi. I am hoping the price for both the 710 and 910 will come down as they become more readily available.

Gultronics have it for £100 cheaper than that:

But I'm also waiting a month to see if the prices drop a little.

Thank you.
my question is: how can I record programme with subtitles without having the programme live on TV, so basically using the timer ?

OK thx. With my old Gundig STB, I get the channel in a small window, and it's quite nice... Shame sony can't do it

Not quite sure what you mean here. Because if you are recording something on the Sony you have to be watching it, obviously you don't if you have another freeview box or sky or IDTV.
What I will check for you is if:
1. You set a timer whilst the subtitles are set to on when you're watching through the Sony. And I'll check if the recorded program has subtitles on.
2. You're watching through the Sony with the subtitles on and press the record button. I'll then check the recording to see if the subtitles are recorded.
I would imagine in both cases the subtitles will be recorded.
In test 1 I'll switch the Sony to standby and see what happens.
Results will be posted tomorrow. Bit of a job on this affy.

For those interested, there is a Sony Dealer in Bromley (Kent) selling the RDR-HXD710 for £340. Forgotten the name of the shop but it is not the Sony Centre which is asking £399.

Edit: I hope I haven't got my prices wrong. Apologies if I have. Memory banks playing up something rotten today.

How did the 710 get on with the channel changes?

My Philips set top box has broken (yes I've tried "virgin mode") and I dont want to spend £400 on a freeview/HDD/DVD (having waited what feels like forever for one to come out) to find that the next upgrade fries the freeview!

A guy in the office reckons that all you need to do to make your DVD player multi-region, is look up a code on some website and enter ii into the DVD - is that correct ? I always thought that is was a hardware thing to make a player multi-region ?
On that note - Has anybody seen any site advertising the 910 - multi-region ?
