It works fine on mine, I always use teletext on channel 100 to see whats on t.v.

Brand new to this so sorry in advance if this goes horribly wrong. I know this info must be here somewhere but can't seem to find it but could anyone PLEASE tell me how to enable the 710 for multi region. I read here that someone mentioned it was so easy to do but never said how to do it or provided a link to the answer. All help would be greatly appreciated. TA.

Has anybody been able to answer the above question: on the 710 how do you record/edit a Freeview programme to HDD, so that you can then dub it to DVD+RW at high speed?

(Couldn't find a reply anywhere on this thread)

Even recorded at SP and dubbed at SP onto 8xTDK blanks, my 710 insists on doing a realtime dub.

Thanks...

I was +R/+RW fan until I found out that the 710 does strange things with the video and audio when dubbing to these disc, don't why it does this, surely it couldn't have been that difficult to program the machine to dub the content to both -/+ format discs.

My main gripe is that I bought a load of +RW discs for the 710 before really understanding that 16:9 anamorphic video was dubbed correctly to the +RW/+R discs but is instead re-dubbed and recorded to the discs in letterbox format.

So I've bitten the bullet and bought a load of -RW and -R discs so I can archive my video of varying ratio formats without re-dubbing and maintaining aspect ratios

I also tend to shy away from extended warranties. My motorcycle insurance was cheaper than some of these "peace of mind" plans.

The only time I had an extended warranty was when I bought a Psion PDA. The hinges could be trusted to break at (or just before) its 2nd birthday. Usually, extended warranties are cunningly applied to the most reliable equipment. After all, they are there to get money out of our pockets, rather than give it back.

Let us know how you get on if you decide to try to make your 710 multiregion.

Thanks

This page looks most promising...

http://www.selen.org/sonydvd.html

... however I've tried it with two laptops (one new, one old) without success.

I did have one thought (after trying it ) namely that you may have to tell the RDR HXD 710 to be device 1 first (it's device 3 by deault).

Also I assume the first & last commands put the player out/in standby mode. The instructions aren't very clear about what should happen at each stage.

1. Yes you can record from the internal Freeview tuner and be watching a SKY channel through the Line3 scart socket

2. However you cannot record a SKY channel through Line3 and be watching a channel on the internal freview. Why this is case only Sony can tell us, I find highly strange that they would let this happen, it does limit what you can achieve with the 710/910.

hopefully Sony will release a Firmware update (although they rarely do) that will address this issue and sort out problem of not being able to record 16:9 onto the +R/RW format in anamorphic which is stupid too.

I've been Emailing Sony customer support about the "+" format anamorphic (16:9) problem on the 910. I specifically asked when a firmware update would become available to fix the bug. Here's what they had to say about it...

"Our understanding is that due to the limitations of a + format disc, they are unable to record 16:9 signal formats. There is no problem with the unit as such as this was the way the unit has been designed and there would be no firmware being released for this."

Since Panasonic and others seem to manage it, at least that's what the reviewers tell us, I think that this response is just so much bovine manure.

So, I'm still waiting for a DVD recorder with HDMI, 160+G, freeview, "+" and "-" support with D/L on at least one format. On paper the 910 was ideal for my needs. If anyone knows a competitor model that matches the spec of the 910 please let me know.

Given the high price of the 910 does it come with an HDMI cable or do you need to factor in another (up to) sixty pounds for that as well?

As mentioned, I think, somewhere earlier in this thread, the RDR-HXD710 was voted DVD/hard-disk recorders "Product Of The Year" in the latest - "Awards 2005" - edition of What Hi Fi? magazine. On sale now at all good newsagents...well worth the £3.90 for their current snapshot of what they vote the best in a wide range of stuff.

Think Forum rules frown on lifting the review in full. But having given the mag a big plug, I don't think they'll mind this short extract:

"A predictable winner perhaps, but when it's this good nobody minds it being the obvious choice. Sony has really led the way over this last year with attractive, easy to use, excellent performing DVD/hard-disk recorders. This 'HXD710 is the top of the pile."

Ok so we're now all sold on the 710/910.
However do we think the 250 hd and the HDMI connection are worth £200?
Seems difficult to justify although I would like both of course!

"It's so well-equipped for a recorder we're left to rue the fact that it doesn't boast a digital video connection - a gripe we usually reserve for dedicated DVD players - but the fact that this will be used by many as their main player means it would be a welcome feature."

And later:

"Picture performance is just as stunning with DVDs, which makes it a real shame there's no HDMI or DVI digital connection to take advantage of the true image potential of this stunning Sony."

They are the only two negative comments.

Not sure what is meant be digital video connection?
If they mean iLink/firewire for video cameras, then I 'm sure that the 710 and the 910 do have.
The HDMI is of course included on the 910 (for only £200 extra, with 250hd).

OK, I've now got my laptop talking successfully to the RDR HXD 710 - you have to set it to use "code 1" for the remote control.

The fifth (and last) infra-red code puts the RDR HXD in/out of standby.

However my machine does not appear to register the first four codes. I've even tried them from within a menu.

Anyone got any more ideas?

Hi I am considering purchasing a 710 / 910 in the next few weeks. Many thanks to everyone who has posted here and helped me work out exactly what these boxes can do. However I am a bit unsure about one thing. (which I am sure has already been answered on this forum but, despite lots + lots of reading, I cannot find the answer to).
If I come home halfway through a film which I had scheduled the HDD to record, can I sit down with a cup of tea and start watching the beginning of the film, while the HDD gets on with recording the rest of it? And could I also skip through the adverts as I watch. I understand from workmates that this is one of the best things about the Sky+ box and I would really like to have the same feature on a freeview box. Can anyone who owns one of these babies answer this?
Thanks in advance,
tallboy

Thanks pashley,

I am now very excited and can hardly wait until I can get my sticky little hands on one. Any suggestions on a good place to buy (probably a 710 rather than a 910) , for example good price, good after sales service, speedy delivery, either online or high street?

Thanks again to you and all the other posters.

I cannot think of any dealer who does their own service or repair, as far as I am aware they all contract out. When I asked Sony about repairs, they gave me the address of a company that specialises in most electronics repair, not just Sony.

If I were nervous about breakdown, I would buy insurance from someone like Domestic and General. I might consider purchacing the 710 from John Lewis, who include a five year guarantee in their price.

I bought my first Sony device in 1963, have used this make ever since and nothing has broken yet. I am perfectly happy to gamble that this would continue with my 710, so my priority was price. I bought online from RGB and have nothing but praise for them.
