They all have the same big book from Sony (keeping in mind Sony Centres are lots of individual companies run as franchises .. they are all given the same "Product Guide" twice a year with expected release dates)

The 910 with 250 HD and Freeview Tuner is due October.
The 910 will have HDMI and all three have iLink.
No prices available yet.
So looks as though it's still September/October for anything good.
In the Sony book under HXD510 was the description terrestrial digital tuner. They also believe April for the unit. The price was - in the book again at £399. I don't know the reality so I am not trying to argue here - but am only going by what I saw!

Sorry, I didn't mean to say they don't have a book with a price in, but it could be one they put together or one where they've filled in the blanks

The Sony UK Product Guide January 2005 till September 2005 has no prices in it, in case it falls into the general publics hands. Got a copy in front of me .. (ok, so you can get a copy if you know the right people!) For this model, all it states is:

Product: RDR-HX510 (NEW)
Availability: June
Trade: £________ (Blank so you can write in the cost price to the store)
SAP Code: RDRHX510S.CEK

Features:
80Gb HDD
DVD+R Double Layer
Precision Cinema Progressive
HQ+ Recording
64x High Speed Dubbing
Pause Live TV
Intelligent Chaptering
D-Matrix Noise Reduction

From that, it indicates it is not a freeview model (it's also missing the Freeview logo from alongside the product)

Yes, I went back to the store today as I was beginning to disbelieve what I had seen. I asked to see the same product guide I was shown on Monday. What I was shown was slightly different and, like you say, had a blank against the price. I also agree that it did not have freeview logo. They did say again it would be available "next month" which I assume to be April.

Two options: Either the drugs I was on last Monday were more powerful than I thought or I was shown something that was either in advance of anything else or has since been corrected. I do not suffer from halucinations that often (honestly, nurse) and even if I had misread the freeview logo I did see the price so I was not shown the same thing this time. Since it was not 1 April on Monday I am now going to resort to alcohol as a means of calming down. I was getting quite excited about a Sony Freeview HDD/DVD with multi disc write capability for £400. Bugger!

Should be interesting by then - April's Philips DVDR7200 has dual layer, freeview and HDMI for 400 quid, and there are at least 2 HDD / DVD versions due by September (no details of dual tuners etc). Add then there is the Panny... Autumn looks like the time frame for the Freeview products to really mature into Sky+ beaters.

I spoke to Sony UK this morning, who were completely on the ball and confirmed as follows - HX510 (analogue - NOT Freeview, great shame!) out in June, Freeview HXD710/ 910 out in September and October respectively... therefore I am just about to accept delivery on my Panasonic TUCTH100 as I can no longer wait after 5 months without my Humax...

Funny that .. did you notice (from the text etched onto the glass window) who operates Sony Leicester?

I saw a Sony "big book" on Friday and can also confirm that the HX510 is analogue. I expressed my disappointment and the guy shrugged his shoulders and said (in a despairing tone) "I know".

Yes, I did know and always moaned at them as to why they charged RRP - yes, I do undertand about overheads, etc, however there is a limit... any way a little talking and in the main you can a negotiate a better deal, though never as keen as their online shop, nevertheless, if in stock you've got the item immediately!

Hi,

I've just purchased an HX510 (only just released) and I'm a little disapointed with it.

My problem is that the TV picture from the built-in tuner is not as good as the picture from the TV tuner.

The picture on my Sony TV is excellent, but when I switch to the HX510, the TV picture is slightly grainy and unstable -it's even worse with the scart switched to RGB.

Is this normal?

I'm on NTL analogue cable and the signal seems to be strong, I've tried changing cables, scart inputs, mains blocks etc. and it's just the same.

Can anyone help me please?

mouse100 you may want to have a look at this thread regarding problems with the RGB output on the new Sony 210 DVD recorder:

Thanks for the reply,

Yes, I found that discussion, while searching on the net for a solution.

Seems like the whole range could be affected.

Looks like I may be taking the Sony back to the shop.

Any suggestions for an alternative?

Even though there's a problem with the output, the unit is really good and addresses all of the problems with the old models. I'd like to keep it, but if it doesn't work...

I don't think that the model they are selling is a Sony RDR-HXD710 - where is the digital tuner. It must be a grey import.

Pixmania do indeed sell imports - they tell you as much in the small print (remember, Pixmania are a french company and aren't based in the UK)

Yep, as planetnokia says that is a RDR-HX710 not an RDR-HXD710.

Why all the despondency about certain Sony "higher priced bracket" DVD recorders still available, only having "analogue" tuners.

I feel that to mention a high quality DVD recorder like Sony, with superior technicalities, and in the same breath mention "Freeview", is somewhat contradictory.

It may, for some anyway, appear more convenient to have a Freeview tuner built in, but its far better to have this as a separate item, not only for the purpose of being able to have a great DVD recorder with a chosen Freeview box, but also because if the Freeview packs in, and workshop service is required, you still have your DVD.

Freeview is a system foisted on us for numerous reasons, but "quality" is certainly NOT one of them.

You are right about the benefits of buying items as seperate components but there is going to come a point in time when you will only be able to buy a DVD Recorder with an internal digital tuner. Eventually Freeview Boxes will cease to be produced.

This is a strange argument given that these Sony boxes contain both a DVD and HDD device, not to mention some kind of tuner.

You may not like the UK's DTT content - it's no worse than analogue, so you must hate that too - but why shouldn't Sony be fitting DTT tuners, given that switch off has already started? Why is a digital tuner any more likely to break down than an analogue one? Why aren't Sony fitting two digital tuners (they should be in this day and age)? What's so bad about having a DTT tuner when it allows a box to have its software fixed or enhanced OTA?
