Anyway can someone tell me what brand of dvdrw + or - media do people use with the sony recorder is there any media problems with different brands. I'm looking to get some dvd-rw because of playing back in 16:9 (wide screen) but dont know what brand to get any feed back welcome....

Sadly, the evidence of others in this thread - and my own experience - is that the EPG isn't updated. IE It sticks to the published times of progs, which, as we all know, may not be reliable re start / finish times. I presume it's part of the ratings game between, say, ITV1 and BBC1, when some ITV1 progs can regularly start three or four mins late...or, especially at weekends, arrive a minute or two early. Ditto BBC1 with some of their progs.

Who actually provides the EPG if you're watching on Sony equipment? Is it Sony itself, or a third party like Teletext or whoever, or a dedicated Freeview provider? And if it can actually be updated with "real time" schedules, is it too much to hope that this could become the norm as the use of EPGs for recordings increases? Or would the TV companies regard that as giving away sensitive info to competitors? It might seem daft, but I'm sure there are very ruthless reasons why, say, Coronation Street can start at 7.34pm and EastEnders can begin at 7.59pm.

I'd stick with a major brand -RW disc, they usually have better rates of failure, i'm using Verbatim -RW discs at the monet bought 30 of them, and so far after using 20 of them I've had no duds

I use Verbatim 6x DVD-RW with my PC and they are reliable.

At last i have my new sony RDR-HXD910 and it rocks very very impressed so far, pausing live tv is very usefull.
I got mine from hiwayhifi.com for 609.95 + postage and it came with citylink i phoned first to see if any was in stock, placed my order about 2pm wednesday and the city link guy was knocking on my door just about 12hrs later now thats fast.

They delivered it at 2am ?!?!

My mistake i wish it was 2am i should have said 24hrs.
Got one problem i've burnt some tv onto a dvd+rw thats all i had till i get some dvd-rw, anyway i can play the dvd in another dvd player (its only a cheap one) but it will not run in my pc.
When i try and run the dvd+rw in my pc i get the menu to select what i wanna play i click the title and then nothing happens. I'm using CyberLink PowerDVD can any give me some feed back on this thanks...

yes pashley all finalized theres no problem reading the dvd but just playing the dvd in power dvd

I great recommendation for Hiway 111roy111. How much was their delivery/postage charge?
I've had to reduce my spend and go for the 710. Looking around, the best price I can find is from these two, but as I don't know anything about them, can anyone please post any experience they've had with any of them?

ok i've found something else out i can copy the dvd files of the dvd+rw and play them on my PC HD all ok but try and run the tvrip from the dvd+rw it just won't have it.
As anybody got any thoughs on this thanks....

Put "Digital Empire Online" into the Search this thread option near the top right hand corner of this page to find post 669. I had a very good experience buying via them, at the same price as you've found. They've obviously got more stock in now.

The price of the 710 at Digital Empire Online is £399, free delivery.

Gultronics are still slightly cheaper at £390.92 inc. delivery.

My 710 arrived this AM just as I was leaving for work so a fun packed evening in store for me tonight. £392 from Gultronics - it took almost 3 weeks even tho they said it was in stock but I'll forgive them as I've saved £110 on the Sony Centre price. Anyone care to give me a top 10 tips like best value recordable DVDs & recommended recording mode etc. save me looking through the 100s of posts on this thread!

I'd say the DVDR media to get for this machine are -R/-RW's as they allow the unit to dub 16:9 recording from HDD to DVD, although you can record direct to DVD in 16:9 with +RW's, I'm using Verbatim 6x -RW's and Verbatim 16x -R's for archiving.

as for recording mode, I use HSP for nearly everything, unless the program is over 1.5 hours long and then I'll step down to SP, I've found I can get just about 2 hours on an empty DVD using SP and 1-1.5 hours using HSP

I tend to use HSP for recording programs through Line3 (Sky digibox) as the quality is never going to be quite as good coming from an external analogue source as opposed to the built Freeview tuner, which the Sony probably takes a direct digital signal from an manipulates

Does anyone know if the Sony simply stores the un-modified digital MPEG2 video to HDD in any of the modes?

After reading posts here I purchased my 710 from Gultronics. Although they said it was 'physically' in stock it took two weeks to deliver claiming that it went out of stock during time they verified my credit card authorisation .As it was a good price at £390 including delivery I will give them the benefit of the doubt.

I am now looking to buy LCD TV shortly and will use Gultronics again although I will want assurance that it is in stock.

The 710 handbook is rather complicated for me and although the machine has been fired up to do the basics can anyone help me with the following.

1 My TV is not digital and it appears that I can not record one digital programme and watch another at the same time. I have a freeview box, can this be put somewhere in the system so that I can perform the above. Also if I buy a 'freeview TV' would this overcome the problem

2 I have a few sentimental video tapes I wish to transfer to CD.Is it just a case of attaching the VCR to Line 3 on the 710. The diagrams showing the multi wires frighten me.

Yes you can put your existing freeview box in the system to enable you to watch one and record one freeview channel or you can get an IDTV. To determine the relevant connections, we would need to know what connections your TV, VCR & Freeview box have and what type of input/output they accept i.e. RGB / Component / S-video / Composite

TV is an old Sony with 2 scart (one marked 1 the other marked 2

Freeview has 2 scart marked AV1 and AV2

VCR has 2 scart one marked Line2(11) In/Decoder Canal Plus/L2(11) the other marked Line1(1)Out Son/Video L1(1)

Both VCR and Freeview have Antenna In and Out and Video L & R

No doubt I could have answered the above in one line but no other connectors on machines to help you further and if there is lack of info. please dont waste your time on this

I have also taken the plunge and bought the 710.
I got it from RGB and the process was excellent. Ordered on Monday and delivered on Wednesday as they promised!

The only missing information is the type of input & output your freeview & tv are compatible with, their manuals should let you know. I'll assume that your TV accepts RGB or Composite on AV1 and S-Video or Composite on AV2 as this was the usual set-up a few years back. Your freeview box is more difficult to guess it will (probably) output RGB or Composite from its TV scart, loop through RGB from VCR scart to TV scart and output S-Video or Composite from its VCR scart.

So here goes:

RF: Aeriel > VCR RF in
RF: VCR RF out > DVD-R RF in
RF: DVD-R RF out > TV RF in

Scart to 3 x RCA lead : VCR Line 1 > DVD-R Line 2 (composite)
Scart to Scart lead : DVD-R Line 1 > Freeview VCR scart (RGB)
Scart to Scart lead : Freeview TV scart to TV AV1 (RGB)
Scart to Scart lead : VCR Line 2 > TV AV2 (Composite)

a) You can watch analogue using the TV's tuner
b) You can watch digital using the Freeview box
c) You can record digital on the DVD-R while doing a) or b)
d) You can record analogue on the VCR while doing a) or b)
e) You can do c) and d) while doing a) or b)
f) You can record videos on the DVD-R while doing a) or b)
g) You can watch DVD's or HDD recordings (Freeview box to stand-by)
h) You can watch videos while recording digital on DVD-R

This probably covers most of your requirements
