Anyone any ideas on getting an output via the RF Out (ariel) so that I can use both the scart link to TV and feed via the RF out to my distribution box which in turn feeds signal to TVs in other room?
I've gone through the tuning search on the TV and unlike VCRs there doesen't seem to be an RF output from the 710 - just the scart.
I use a Sky+ to feed output to other rooms and would like to be able to view output from my 710 in other rooms as well.

Just a note to say that I found HiWayHiFi great to deal with too. I ordered a D710 on Weds 5.00pm and it was delivered at 9.15am Friday. Good price too. Nice to be able to say something positive about a supplier once in a while...

Ordered my 710 multi-region from KK Electronics on Thursday for £395.99 and less than 24 hours later it was delivered. Absolutely great service!

Have only had a chance for a few initial impressions.

- Hard disk recording and playback seem great but the fast forward settings seem a bit difficult to control - especially for going through ad breaks. It would have been better if the time display was shown on screen when doing this (like Sky+).

- Can't find a way to automatically 'pad' recordings by adding a set number of minutes to the start and end.

- When playing a DVD it doesn't seem to remember where you last were (but I haven't fully tested it yet).

- Connecting a Sky+ box through the 710 and setting it to RGB disables the Smartlink function (why, when setting it to video lets the function work?).

Anyway so far so good and it's more just a case of getting used to the way it works. Thank heavens I waited and never went for the Panasonic instead!

There seems to be a new version, the RDR-HXD710S. Anybody know the difference is from the original RDR-HXD710? (Its facia looks different but I could not see what the technical difference was)

Can't be done with the recorder as standard, you'd need something like this

I just got a 710 from rgbdirect, very fast delivery.

I have a question about freeview. Every now and then a red 'interactive' icon appears which I utterly detest, how can I kill it quickly and efficently ? I guess I cannot permanently switch it off but I cannot get to go off at all.
Pressing the red button and then text to exit leaves it showing, any other suggestions.

Does anyone have any views on how "good" or otherwise the Freeview tuner in the Sony 710 and 910 is? I live in an area with pretty good analogue but poorer digital reception, and whilst it makes sense to have digital with an eye to the future, I get better recording quality (no break-up or freezing) when I record using the analogue tuner in my D-VHS video deck. Am I likely to have to keep the VHS machine just to receive analogue and provide a better source for the DVD recorder?

I have been posting this issue for a while. And it seems that I have found out what is needed to have the rdr-hx710 to communicate with sat tuners...

For the pace puma, philips recorders have used their IR blaster to take the EPG information fromthe tuner as well as able to perform all timer functions as requested.

Only a few sony models have the ir blaster incl. the new 715 and gx300

The quesiton is now: where can we find a ir blaster to perform the timer fucntion adn check the epg...and simply control the tuner from the dvd recorder.

Nice article:
http://www.consumersearch.com/www/el...fullstory.html

hope you guys can come up with some help

PS:

I was told that this could be solved also by working on the sat dvm software...again, I am sure we can solve all issues by having the recorder to take over

cheers

I got a 710 (from RGB Direct btw - good service, recommended! ) I'm happy with it, but there is an odd bit of behaviour I can't understand so I thought I'd bring it here.

Every morning, around 5 - 6am (I'm not quite sure when), it seems to switch itself on, at least partly. The fan comes on, but there seems to be no HDD activity, and all the front panel lights stay in "off" mode. It isn't making a recording - no recording is programmed in for this time and nothing appears on the title list afterwards. And it always switches itself off again at exactly 7am. Weird . Does anyone else get this? Anyone know what it's all about?

Thank you, but I have been reading this thread which is why I made an informed choice to buy the 710.

My point was that the work around involves breaking the link between the timer event and the EPG which Sony discourage as their EPG works in a kind-of PDC way so that if the programme starts early or finishes late the recording times will be automatically adjusted. The BBC seem to be good at co-ordinating the programme information with the actual start and end times but I'm not sure about other broadcasters.

I read somewhere else it was switching itself partially on to update the EPG info. I don't think you can stop it doing this.

well i've noticed it turns itself on between 4am and switchers itself off at 7am, and it takes that long to update the EPG, come on it must be doing something else other than that.

Hi Bob and Roy. You're both right. I got a (remarkably prompt) reply from Sony just now. This early morning activity is the updating of the EPG. It does seem odd that it takes a 21st Century computer two hours to do this though. And why does it have to turn on the fan I wonder? Can't generate that much heat.

The slow speed is not the fault of the Sony box but the transmission speed of the data over the air. Having said that a PAL res TV channel is about 5 Mbits/s which is pretty fast so I would expect the EPG updates to be faster than they are.
However, there is no good reason for turning the fan on full blast, I wish it had a 'smart' fan controller that only used enough speed to maintain a set temp e.g. 50c. Xbox media centre can do this for the Xbox and it makes a really big reduction to the noise.

On a side note I find the 710 fan noise to be louder than I was expecting but still the right side of ok.

Hi

I've just bought a 710 and a Sony 23" LCD TV, in fact it's the second 710 I've had as the first didn't work properly when it came out of the box. My problem is that when playing DVD's or watching the TV through the 710 tuner the colours are over blown with a noticeable red/brownish bias, it seems to vary on programme material and even within one programme. An instance is the current series of "Little Britain" most of it is fine, but the scenes with Rob Brydon and the "fat ladies" has this strange colour bias. It was the same with the first 710 I had.

I'm using scart RGB at the moment but intend to use component connections ASAP. Will this improve matters?
All my leads are very good quality.

I've not tried adjusting the colour on the 710 on the playback settings yet, and anyway would this effect the picture when viewing through the 710's tuner.

I'd appreciate any advice or experience anyone has. apart from this problem the 710 does just about all I need it too.

Hi,

I'm looking to get a new LCD TV in the next few weeks and wanted to know more about the 710's component output performance.

I assume it can output both 576i and 576p signals

my current setup is: skybox connect to Line 3 scart, and the the 710 connected to the TV through the other scart, now, I can switchthe 710 to output either the Freeview signal or the Line 3 feed using the TV/DVD button on the remote, this is usual for scart to 'pass through'

but what happens if still had my Skybox conenct to Line 3 scart, but I wanted to output my signal to the TV through the Component connection, does line3 signal from sky still get passed through and output to from component connection?

Maybe it would be better to turn the 710 off overnight (i.e. at the mains plug that sticks into the wall!). I've found that when my 710 is turned back on then it takes a few minutes only to update the EPG. And it'd help the tree huggers save the planet eh? .

On the fan noise - I tried a sony 510 before I finally bought the 710. I could hear the fan across a 20 foot living room (above the noise of the TV). One of the problems of packing complex power hungry electronics into a small box I guess....

Like middlep1 needs to know about the sony recorder for connecting a component cable i would like to know can the sony RDR-HXD910 output 625i interlace cos i think my JVC LCD-26D50BJ can only take a 625i signal.
I really dont want to spend alot of money on a good quality cable and to find out it does not work can someone help plzzzzz thanks....

A section from my tv manual below

Quote:
“Since the TV is designed to make full use of the resolution of the original video source, the motion may appear unnatural when the video source is input with 625p progressive-scanning component signals. If this occurs, change the output setting of the connected device to 625i interlace-scanning component signal output.”

Thanks Bill and for the link.
I wonder why Sony don't have an output other than a loop through?
It used to be quite handy having the ability to view via the scart and feed via the aerial lead as well!

Yes, I was disappointed with this aspect of the Sony, but the rest of the package more than makes up for it. It is a bit strange as I reckon more and more houses will be built with an RF return to feed Sky/whatever around the rest of the house...err like ours!

I wonder if there isn't more to this than a simple EPG update. It could also be checking for any software updates at the same time. If this update needed to be dowloaded and installed this could take up most of the time. After all most people will have their TVs tuned to a BBC channel at some stage during most upgrades and be notified accordingly. However I don't think the same could be said for the recorders.

Just another theory...
