Any clues what to search on for this fairly vital info? We are up to 32 pages after all.

on the paddin havin receved my HXD910 yesaday from RGBdirect (very good service) and having not done much i recored 2 things last night from the guide and there seems no way to add time however it did start recording about 2/3 mins early and over ran by the same on both recordings
having been used to the humux 8000T which im still useing as 2nd box i think im impressed so far

Well thats good news. Unfortunately RGBdirect have sold out 'no stock for 2 weeks' - does anyone know of any Online retailers with the 910 in stock and under £600 with postage?

After setting up the timer to record a programme of the EPG, go into the timer list and modify it so that it is a recurring recording. Once you've done that, for some reason you are then allowed to go into the timer setting and manually change the start and end times.

Bit of a faff and for most programmes I find letting the EPG do it's own thing to be pretty reliable. Two exceptions to this

1. when channels broadcast 60 seconds of news in the middle of a film (what is that all about incidently?) and the EPG for the film is split. I always record the news program as the film quite often overlaps the EPG for the news - so if you don't get the news you miss part of the film.

2. sport or something on after sport, I wouldn't trust the EPG and would pad by an hour or so if I really wanted to be sure of getting the programme or sport event.

Just to confirm this is what Sony said when I emailed them -
The reason RDR-HXD710 requires something like a Scart connection is because the product does not have an RF modulator (unlike Sky etc). The RF modulator is the part of the unit that would enable it to send picture and sound via the RF (aerial) cable. As the RDR-HXD710 only uses a RF loop-through system rather than an RF modulator, the RF output is purely for providing other tuners (like a TV or Freeview box) with signal. This basically means that it cannot send the pictures to other TVs around the house, unless they are also linked to the unit with a video connection, like a Scart.

Shame as it would have been nice.

Yes thank you - bit of a faff as you say. I suppose this holds for the 710 and 910? This annoyance and the fact that it does not transmit a channel over RF appear to the biggest issues for me.

Like you I have poor digital/good analogue signals. My old (on digital)freeview box would keep breaking up. I got a sony freeview last year and it hardly breaks at all. just the odd occasional pixels. Ive now got the 710 and its freeview is just as good. An added bonus is that channel 5 is good and was non existant on analogue

My 710 received from Gultronics is working fine but it is taking me hours to understand the finer points. Although this is a general question can anybody supply an answer.

I am currently transferring sentimental tapes (approx 10) from Video to DVD. As I have an old telly I transferred them to 4:3 size. It was only half way through this tedious process that it struck me that if I change my telly(which I probably will in a few months 4:3 is probably not the correct size.

My question is are all future TV's to be sized 16:9 (In which case I will have to start all over again.

If the original is 4:3 size then the copies should be the same. If you display them as 16:9, they will either be cut to fit or truncated.

They can do a multi region version if you ask them. Beware the similar sounding non-Freeview version RDR-HX910 (no 'D') which even Sony don't mention anywhere (could be a European version?)

I got my 910 from Krish on Thursday - it was one of only two they had left.

HDMI is definitely an improvement over RGB scart. I watched Titanic (admittedly a very well encoded disc) through HDMI and the results were pretty stunning.

I have a couple of gripes though.

1) As someone else said, navigation through the hard disk recordings is a bit clumsy, speeds 1 & 2 are quite slow but speed 3 is too fast so if I want to go forward say 5 minutes, I end up either taking ages, or over-shooting. Maybe I will get used to it.

2) As many have pointed out, chapters are not kept when recording from HDD to DVD-R.

3) I removed the advert breaks from an ITV recording on the HDD using A>B remove which worked well. However when I dubbed from HDD>DVD-R, the in-point of the various sections came about a half-second earlier than they did on the HDD. So although the edits looked perfect on the HDD with the ad-caps removed, on DVD-R playback, you see the last half-second or so of the captions! This is a real pain.

4) Is there any way to stop the on screen display (just a little box in the corner with the green "play arrow" appearing so often. It appears on layer changes on standard DVD playback, and it appears at all of the edit points in playback of my DVD-R recording from the HDD mentioned above - even though the machine is not able to recognize those as chapter points.

5) There seems to be no way to display the bit rate on screen.

If anyone knows more about how to deal with these problems I'd be interested.

Overall despite these issues and the bizarre DVD+R letterboxing problem, it's a great machine.

Elsewhere in this thread someone mentioned that (3) only happened if you went in for high-speed dubbing.

Does anyone know the score re. progressive output which I am told can "unpick" the 3:2 pulldown on Region 1 DVDs? The manual says it only works with Component output but surely it should work through HDMI also?

I have discovered that if you pause, then click the fast forward/backward once, you move one frame. This has greatly improved my editting.

Thanks I have ordered one from hiwayfi.com now. While I am waiting for it to arrive perhaps someone with sky+ and a 710/910 could answer a query:

Do you have to attach the VCR port on the sky+ box to the 910? Are there particular advantages in that? I wondered if it would be ok to connect it to the TV port on the sky+ instead. The reason I ask is that I want to daisy chain three devices and would obviously prefer it to be only one step between sky and the 910 for copying stuff.

I believe that when you 'copy' a sky+ recording the same signal is sent to both ports which are both capable of RGB out - is that right? Would the Synchro thing only work on one port? Should I care about that?

You can select an input source on the 710 so you can record from any source including your tv if you wish.
I have recorded both from the Sky+ vcr port (using copy) and the ilink port and the results are excellent. I have also recorded directly from the tv display which worked ok but delivered a poorer picture.

I have Sky+ and a 710 and I didn't use the video out from the Sky+ box at all.

I connected the TV out (RGB) from the Sky+ to the line in on the 710 (Line 3 I think) and made sure that I set this to RGB on the 710 menu. Then I took the line out from the 710 to the TV and everything seems to work well and means I only need to use one TV scart.

The only downside to all of this is that the smartlink between the TV and the 710 no longer works - only works if you set line 3 to video and lose the RGB.

Thanks. So you noticed no difference between the TV and VCR output as doverrog did? I must say that I can't see why it should be different. I only have one RGB scart on my Sony TV unfortunately. Have you used the Synchro thing though?

Smartlink can be a pain in my experience if the video recorders are anything to go by. The TV and Video were always 'talking' to one another when it was inconvenient

I've had my machine for 2 weeks & already the wife can't live without it!
Working my way through the manual & a couple of things I have yet to work out

1. How do you get the clock time to display on screen without flicking to EPG page?

2. When ffwding thru adverts it leaps past the end of the adverts & into the film or prog. can I set it to rejoin at the end of the adverts?

2b! re above is there an easy way to remove adverts say in a film without going all the way thru & removing "chapters"

Got my 910 yesterday an I am ploughing through the manual as many are. A few small niggles.

1. Live pause. I expected it to be instant like my Humax and Sky + boxes but it seems to need to pause for a length of time before you cancel it. I suppose you wouldn't normally pause for just a few seconds anyway.

2. Why are some of the DVD player and other controls which are nothing directly to do with recording (e.g. 'input), 'hidden' under the flap? I obviously intend to use the box as a DVD player as well but this 'function' seems rather downplayed.

3. Pressing the audio button and the time/text button seems to do nothing at all playing DVD Video. Perhaps it depends on the DVD?

4. The 910 seems geared to using VR mode. How compatible is this mode?

5. The comparison between the 710 and the 910 recording capacities indicates that the 910 gives at best double the capacity of the 710 depending on the recording mode. Shouldn't it be more than three times the capacity of the 710. That was the reason for buying the much more expensive model after all.

Don't think so...

AFAIUI you can either use the delete A-B method which envolves FFing through the film to the adverts then setting the A & B points and then deleting the set section; or you can delete chapters from the original using the delete chapter function.

I've found the latter to be much quicker than using the A-B delete function.

In general I first of all play through the film using the chapter advance to find the area where the adverts are, and I check the bracketing of the chapter marks around the break. On some programmes and films the autochapter marks are perfect but on others it can be slightly iffy. If I find a advert break which is well bracketed by the chapters already I leave it, but if I find an advert break where the bracketing is rubbish or if there is a chapter mark in the middle of the break, then I manually add chapter marks to bracket the break.

When you go into the delete chapter function, you've got several ways of checking that the selected chapters are the right ones. You've got the preview screen which flips through frames of the selected chapter starting at frame 1 and ending with the last frame. You've also got a time bar showing the chapters of the whole recording, above the chapter selection area. When you start to add chapters for deletion you can see the pattern of adverts on the recording.
