In my opinion it is a cut-throat market that the cheap drag'n'drop mp3 players will dominate. Sony with their high price convert'n'drop players don't stand a chance.

What does this mean for the release schedule? Who knows...”

Having read the half page article in my local Tesco library (bottom of page 11 - I think) it did state there was a Freeview tuner with 160GB hard drive, dual layer DVD recorder and a £500 price tag.
No HDMI connection.

The 1010 and/or 910 is expected to have 250GB hard drive and HDMI connection.

Ah, your 'library' obviously gave you more time to read the article than mine did! I'm glad I was wrong, because I'm really looking forward to seeing this soon. I was hoping to get my hands on one by late October, but I'm not holding my breath.

If you can wait and depending on how brave you feel, you could always visit the What Hi-Fi & Stuff show 2005 between the 4th-6th November at the Novotel in Hammersmith, London.
Sony will have a room there to demonstrate their new kit.
£10 in advance, £12 on the door.

The link below will give you more details.

The What HiFi arcticle is clear - it is RDR HXD710 and clearly indicates a Freeview tuner. No HDMI or DVI though but otherwise looks shit-hot. The confusing bit is the top left box which says RDR HX710 but everything else states "D" and freeview - plus the freeview DVB-T is in line with advance info..

If the 210 isn't manufactured by Sony and the Freeview 710 looks like the 210 then will the Freeview 710 be assembled in true Sony manufacturing facility or by LG/Liteon?

outsourcing / branding is rife. Don't worry. We make stuff for our biggest competitor (not the consumer electronics industry but I know it happens).

Don't give a sh!t who makes it if it delivers what it says on the tin!

At last we have a first real siting of these machines being available soon. Has anyone else seen the UK machines advertised anywhere and do we have a "best price" yet?
I wonder what delivery dates are being quoted. If they are due at the show in November will we have to wait till then?

Thanks for the links, but this is old news (the pages were last updated in March). Doing a search via Google currently produces just 13 results, and many of them are from this forum! I am hoping the information will become more abundant as the release date nears.

The RDR-HXD910 has just been reviewed in the UKs Home Cinema Choice mag (issue 121) which I've just bought.

The reviewer and pictures confirm :-

- it does has HDMI output
- it does have integrated freeview

All in all the reviewer seemed very impressed, but a few flaws were pointed out in the pros and cons, and in the conclusion, these were :-

- freeview widescreen recording bugs
- HDD navigation could be improved
- menus great but slow
- one tuner
- no CAM
- HDMI output is so good but then shows flaws in broadcasting lower bit rate channels

However, after reading the review just once I cannot recall the 'freeview widescreen recording bugs' being elaborated in the review, nor the HDD navigation.

Will re-read later.

I could scan the review in tonight, but not sure how to post it (and if this is allowed ?)

Also the price was listed as £700

Fast PC
+ Digital TV Card
+ Big Hard Disk Drive
+ Video Handling Software
+ DVD Writer

= No need to buy a DVD Recorder

Is my calculation correct? Except for possibly the Digital TV Card most posters will have the above components already.

Thanks. So is there any other difference apart from HD size?

Interesting comment on the Cheap Electricals website:
Quote:
“Sony RDR-HXD710 Release Date End Sept 2005. We are having many enquiries on this products. It is due imminently and we do not feel we will satisfy all demand. It will be sold on a first come first served basis. We will not charge your card until the goods have been dispacthed. [sic]”

They are quoting £440 inc. VAT and delivery.

Yesterday, I briefly visited my local Sony Centre, however no news to report other than September-ish. Sony addict I may be (and as you can see from the left, already have 2 DVB's from them), however no amount of coaxing (even if it was free!) will make me part with my credit card for either of the Sony white elephants... basically no twin no win, sorry Sony, you really have missed the boat this time... and I actually feel in the past 18 months or so that they are losing direction as a whole which is worrying for such a technology stalwart ”

Nirm, I agree with Chappers. How often do you need to record two channels at once? OK, sometimes. Simple answer… My old telly, video and freeview box will be banished to the back room when my 710 arrives. There’s my back-up!! I also have a portable tv/video combo upstairs – ok, quality not great, but not bad for the soaps for Mrs Porridge!

Are you guys saying that you can record from the built in tuner and an external source at the same time on the 710? If that’s the case, my new telly (Sony KDE-P37XS1) with built in Freeview can be my second digital tuner. It even provides output while in standby, so I can record two digital channels at the same time, even when out. Three if you count the back room!!

My local Sony Centre still can’t give me much info, or definite release date or price, but they have taken £449 off me two weeks ago, so I get the first one that they get.

To vindicate my position, I add 5 minutes to the end of each programme (eg. ITV finishes at 2005, and BBC starts at 2000) in order that I don't miss the last bit of a programme which is increasingly happening (deliberately???), especially when Big Brother timings were all over the place! Also, lets be honest, its far neater (and less clutter) to have everything in one place especially with the EPG! At present (touch-wood) my TUCTH100 is coping admirably

My local Sony Centre has gone out of business (yes, it was part of Capital Sound & Vision, aka Unbeatable), so I am afraid I will not be able to go and criticise the Sony units (which I would not have any way, apart from the lack of a twin tuner )

I guess it's horses for courses - the amount of recording I do doesn't warrant a twin tuner, I guess I'm upgrading for the quality rather than the quantity.

I am a bit worried about my Sony Centre going out of business as they have four hundred and forty nine of my English pounds. But the nice man in the shop said there was no chance of that so I guess it must be ok
