Yeah I remember that too, Sam started spending too much time with Callum it seems. Dexter was nothing but nice to him throughout.

I just watched that video too and yeah even back then they seemed to like each others company. We never really saw any of it so it seemed like it all just came out of nowhere when the whole love triangle thing happened.
You've got to respect Charlie for being one of the only people to actually like him, although her actions towards the end were questionable.

I think if it wasn't for the snake thing he would have an entirely different experience. He would have been on a level playing field to the others, in that when he messed up it would be forgotten by the next day rather than dragged out for weeks.
